Apply by April 26th! Facilitating Harm Reductions Support Groups Training Series
The Maryland Department of Health’s (MDH) Center for Harm Reduction Services (CHRS), in partnership with Voices of Hope, is accepting applications for the Facilitating Harm Reduction Support Groups training series.
This is a free, four-session virtual training series. Two different cohorts are available - you will have an opportunity to select one of the cohort dates/times that works best for your schedule and it must be completed in it's entirety:
Cohort 1: May 27th, June 3rd, June 10th and June 17th, 9:30 AM - 12:30 PM each session.
Cohort 2: July 6th July 13th, July 20th, July 27th, 5:30 PM - 8:30 PM each session.
The training will focus on meeting people where they are and providing support groups in a variety of delivery models. The training will offer solutions that empower participants to have a say in how the meeting is run, where, when and why this is important in the stages of change. The training will also introduce how to navigate and link participants to social, housing, supportive services and health care. The training will also introduce cultural competence: knowledge of social and economic contributors to the harms associated with drug use, awareness of intersectional identities of people who use drugs, knowledge of harm reduction approaches to substance use that are drug specific, understanding local and regional services landscapes, communication skills, understanding of sexual risk and harm reduction approaches. Agenda includes Stages of Change, continuum of drug use, cultural competency and intersectionality, drug specific harm reduction approaches, strategies of support of any small change, special populations, empowering facilitators and groups, resource brokering, delivering prevention information in casual setting, bias discovery, managing our own stuff, setting, involvement, engagement, and role plays.
In addition to the live sessions, there will be between-session engagement opportunities (including readings, worksheets, goal-setting and feedback opportunities) . After completing the training series, participants will join a one-year learning collaborative that will meet quarterly through August 2022. It is important that participants can commit to attending all sessions and engaging with the between-session exercises, as well as joining the quarterly learning collaborative meetings after completing the training series. Training attendees will be supported by CHRS throughout the year in implementing and integrating a harm reduction approach into support groups.
Please apply as soon as possible as space is limited. The application deadline is Friday, April 23, 2021 and all accepted applicants will be contacted via email in early May. If you have any questions, please contact Marie Stratton at firstname.lastname@example.org.
