Prevention Experience: 

2,000 hours working experience providing Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug (ATOD) prevention services at a substance abuse prevention program licensed by the state of Michigan

Supervised Prevention Experience: 

  • 120 hours of direct supervision performing functions related to the IC&RC Prevention Performance Domains.
  • A minimum of 10 hours must be spent in supervised activities in each Performance Domain. Supervision by a CPS or CPC-R is required.

Educational / Training Requirements: 

  • 120 contact hours education required; at least 24 of the contact hours must be specific to ATOD Prevention and the remaining contact hours may be ATOD-related addressing the IC&RC Prevention Domains

  • Applicants must complete six (6) contact hours of face-to-face, MCBAP-approved Prevention Ethics training

Examination: 

Successful completion of the IC&RC Prevention Specialist written examination

Advanced Title: 

Certified Prevention Consultant (CPC-R)

Advanced Requirements:

  • Experience - 8,000 hours working experience providing Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug (ATOD) prevention services at a substance abuse prevention program licensed by the state of M

  • Education - 240 contact hours education required; at least 48 of the contact hours must be specific to ATOD Prevention and the remaining contact hours may be ATOD-related addressing the IC&RC Prevention Domains. Applicants must complete six (6) contact hours of face-to-face, MCBAP-approved Prevention Ethics training.
  • Supervised Practical Training - 240 hours of direct supervision performing functions related to the IC&RC Prevention Performance Domains. A minimum of 10 hours must be spent in supervised activities in each Performance Domain. Supervision by a CPS or CPC-R is required.
  • Testing and Review - Successful completion of the IC&RC Prevention Specialist written examination.
  • Code of Ethics – Sign and adhere to the current MCBAP Prevention Code of Ethical Standards.
  • Residency - Must live or work within the State of Michigan fifty-one percent (51%) of the time.
  • Application - When all standards have been met, including exam passage, submit complete application to MCBAP for review. All documentation must be on copies of the forms provided and in the format specified in the application manual to be applicable to this standard.
  • Fee - Submit non-refundable two-year initial certification fee.
  • Renewal – Twenty (20) contact hours of MCBAP-approved continuing education training per year since last certification issue date required for recertification. Signed reaffirmation of the Prevention Code of Ethical Standards, and payment of nonrefundable renewal fees
