The Role of Policy in Preventing Substance Misuse

The benefits of implementing community-level policy change efforts to prevent substance misuse are well documented: policies are sustainable, cost effective, far reaching, and can be a good complement to other individual-focused strategies. Yet policy work remains one of prevention’s most underutilized strategies, perceived by some as the purview of state and federal government, by others as off-limits due to funding restrictions. For those who lack formal training in policy development, going down the policy route can seem complicated, a little amorphous, and even scary.

This peer-sharing call is designed to help practitioners overcome these challenges. Participants will have a chance to continue the policy conversation we began in September during the two-part PTTC webinar series on policy development and implementation. Facilitated by the webinar presenters, the call will focus on youth tobacco and marijuana use, including vaping.
