SAMHSA recognizes Substance Use Prevention Month in October each year to increase public awareness of the dangers of substance use and its effects on communities. This month provides an opportunity to involve communities in reducing substance use among youth and adults, as well as a reminder of the value of prevention.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) promotes mental health, preventing substance misuse, and offering easily available support services that encourage recovery. SAMHSA initiatives are designed to improve people's general health and quality of life, particularly for those who are struggling with mental health and drug misuse issues.

The benefits of preventing substance use are numerous and include:

  • Lowers Risk Factors: Prevention initiatives reduce the likelihood of substance use starting or escalating by addressing underlying causes.
  • Increases Protective Factors: By promoting healthy habits and resilience, these efforts support individuals, families, schools, and communities.
  • Supports Mental Health: Substance use prevention helps lower the incidence of related problems, fostering stronger and more resilient communities.

There are several ways to actively participate in substance use prevention efforts during this month. One meaningful approach is “Talk. They Hear You.”®, a campaign that encourages community members, parents, and caregivers to have candid discussions regarding substance use with young people. Another useful option is Screen4Success, an online screening tool that provides resources for follow-up and can be used to assist in detecting risk factors for substance usage in yourself, your child, or someone you care about. Additionally, SAMHSA’s 21st Prevention Day provides an opportunity to learn about innovative preventive techniques.

In any crisis, individuals can dial or text 988 to receive immediate assistance.

It is crucial to raise public awareness about the risks associated with substance use and its profound impacts on individuals and communities during Substance Use Prevention Month. SAMHSA emphasizes the importance of collaboration in reducing substance addiction and promoting mental health through prevention initiatives. By enhancing protective factors, decreasing risk factors, and prioritizing mental well-being, we can foster healthier communities.

Let us commit to open conversations, create supportive environments, and prioritize mental health. Together, we can make a meaningful difference in the fight against substance use.
