Substance Use Prevention in the Food and Hospitality Industry: Promoting Healthy Work Environments for Young People in Maine

This webinar is for prevention professionals looking to work with the food and hospitality industry. As the second largest employer in the state, the food and hospitality industry is a cornerstone of Maine’s economy. It is also the industry ranked highest for employees with substance use disorder. With one third of all employed young people working for the industry, we have a responsibility to support programs that prevent and reduce substance use in the workplace and promote a healthy work environment.

In this webinar, participants will learn about a new workplace initiative that was created to address the substance use culture of the industry, called Youth Employment Assistance Program (YEAP). YEAP engages the food and hospitality industry in substance use prevention and creating healthy work environments for young people. Participants will gain insight into effective ways to engage the industry, the role workplace norms play in substance use, and access to resources, such as an employer toolkit and workplace poster. With Covid-19 increasing the number of individuals struggling with substance use and mental illness, the skills and tools covered in this webinar are more relevant than ever.

Learning Objectives:

  • Define how substance use impacts the workplace and ways to address it.
  • Learn how to implement and utilize the YEAP employer toolkit.
  • Identify effective strategies for increasing prevention in the food and hospitality industry.
