Look, Listen and Learn: Advancing Early Achievement in Young Children of Color   Date: August 27, 2020   Webinar Description The achievement gap in Washington State continues to be “led” by children of color. Meanwhile, children of color also lead in television and media consumption. By showcasing Black and Indigenous people and people of color learning, teaching, and exploring, television becomes a tool to provide positive media representation of diversity as well as greater access to early learning principles in more homes. As substance misuse prevention professionals, our role is to address health disparities and improve health outcomes in our communities. This webinar will explore the research behind what works best to promote school readiness and success and will highlight the Look, Listen and Learn (LL+L) program. LL+L is a new concept in public access television. As an early listening educational program, LL+L helps bridge the achievement gap by featuring local enrichment venues and applying brain development knowledge to foster learning and enhance caregiver-child relationships.   Presenter Val Thomas-Matson is the Founder/Producer of Look, Listen, and Learn. Val is a community organizer/activist with deep experience in media. In addition to early work at KING TV, she created, produced, and hosted the daily community affairs talk show Communities in Action for King County Government TV for three years. She has also worked extensively with the multi-award winning production company North by Northwest, serving as co-host of Washington Grown, and managing video production elements for educational, nonprofit and government video campaigns. Due to the recency of the spread of vaping, there has been insufficient time for research to confirm evidence-based programs that can specifically prevent vaping. Enhance skills and attitudes helpful for achieving positive outcomes About David Anderson, Ph.D. David Anderson, Ph.D. is Professor Emeritus of Education and Human Development at George Mason University, where he worked for 28 years; he served as Professor and Director of the Center for the Advancement of Public Health.  Prior to that, he served as a college administration at The Ohio State University, Radford University and Ohio University. He has managed hundreds of national state and local projects while teaching graduate and undergraduate classes.   An active researcher and writer, he has decades-long research on college drug and alcohol issues, high school youth and community efforts. The focus of his work is upon practical applications for youth, young adults, and leaders at the campus, community, state and national level, and he continues with training, speaking and research.  His most recent book is Leadership in Drug and Alcohol Abuse Prevention: Insights from Long-Term Advocates (Routledge, 2020).  Other recent books include Health and Safety Communication: A Practical Guide Forward (2017), Wellness Issues for Higher Education (2015) and Further Wellness Issues for Higher Education (2016).  He is co-authoring a new book focusing on college drug and alcohol abuse prevention and preparing the College Alcohol Survey (1979 –2021). He was recently appointed to a four-year term on the U.S. Center for Substance Abuse Prevention’s National Advisory Council.  He is active as a community leader in Celebration, Florida, where he serves as a Director and immediate past President of the Board of Directors ofthe Celebration Residential Owners Association.

While evidence-based approaches to prevention are being strongly supported by policy makers of late, it isn’t always clear what this means and how it might relate to your own work in the field. This webinar is an overview of prevention science and how it has brought about the development not only of effective prevention programs but also to the planning and implementation of these. Evidence-based programs have been shown through rigorous research to be successful at reducing risky and unhealthy behaviors across the life span. This webinar describes how the science contributes to our understanding of the etiology and prevention of substance use and related behaviors, examples of some of the most effective interventions and policies.

The Mountain Plains Mental Health Technology Transfer Center and the Mountain Plains Prevention Technology Transfer Center collaborated to host a six-part webinar series, Suicide Prevention Across the Educational Continuum. Throughout the series, participants are provided with information related to suicide prevention and intervention for youth, young adults, and college students. School-Based Suicide Prevention Interventions for K-12 Population Participants in this webinar will learn the youth suicide prevalence nationally and the implications to schools. They will also be able to familiarize themselves with multi-tiered systems of positive behavior and social emotional learning. In addition, how the multi-tiered systems support the prevention of suicide. Finally, the webinar will discuss ways to build capacity and sustainability of these services in K-12 schools. Suicide Assessment and Response for K-12 Populations Responding to mental health crisis and risk of suicide in a school setting presents unique challenges and considerations for mental health practitioners, educators, and parents. Participants in this session will learn recommended best practices for assessing children and adolescents for suicide and initiating appropriate responses to youth experiencing thoughts of suicide in a K-12 school setting. Special attention is given to common screening and assessment tools used in school settings, best practices for utilizing an interdisciplinary team approach to respond to youth experiencing thoughts of suicide in a school setting, and ways to identify risk and protective factors for youth and adolescents at risk of suicide. Drug Endangered Children: A Collaborative Approach In this short video, you will learn where the National Alliance for Drug Endangered Children started, where they are now, an understanding of risk, and when to intervene to change the trajectory of a child's life.

While certification as a prevention specialist may seem daunting to some, this Virtual Learning Community will provide participants with an understanding of the prevention certification process: why it exists, who gives it, and what the minimum requirements are. The session will also address the need to increase the prevention Latino workforce nationwide to better serve Hispanic/Latino communities. The dialogue will include a first-hand account of the process and steps of a Hispanic/ Latino certified prevention Specialist who will share the experience of attaining the prevention certification. Besides, suggestions for the most effective way to prepare for the certification examination will be discussed. Adult SBIRT Pocket Card The Adult SBIRT Pocket card was created to assist providers in screening patients for risky alcohol levels and providing a brief intervention when necessary.  The front contains National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) Guidelines for low-risk drinking limits, categories of use pyramid, and a readiness-to-change scale to share as a visual aid and help the patient decide how ready they are to make a change.  The back of the pocket card identifies steps of the brief intervention along with key interviewing techniques.
