Offered by the Great Lakes PTTC for prevention practitioners in HHS Region 5: IL, IN, MI, MN, OH, and WI Building on coalition leadership Part 1, this virtual learning event focuses on building skills that facilitate leadership in the coalition and the community. This webinar highlights effective virtual engagement techniques for existing and new coalition members and stakeholders in the age of COVID-19. Participants will receive hands-on tools they can use with their coalitions. A successful engagement technique is effective messaging. No continuing education is available. Contact us if you have any questions.   Course Summary: Direct to consumer alcohol sales are on the rise nationwide, especially as some states loosen or modify restrictions to allow alcohol delivery, curbside pickup and cocktails to go during the pandemic.  These models challenge traditional alcohol control policy and require creative solutions to address challenges in enforcement. This webinar will review current policies on home alcohol delivery, alcohol shipping and curbside service, challenges in enforcement and compliance. It will also provide specific examples of how compliance and enforcement can work in this environment and action steps that can be taken in your own community. This webinar will include data specific to the New England states as well as drawing from nationwide trends and examples from other regions. Addressing Emerging Prevention Issues: Building Strategic Partnerships to Improve Health Equity: Peer Sharing  Date  August 13, 2020    Description  An integral part of prevention work is ensuring behavioral health equity, meaning that all members of a community have access to the same opportunities. Engaging partners who have relationships with under-represented groups is key to understanding and addressing prevention needs of these marginalized groups and therefore promoting health equity. This peer sharing call explores how to cultivate and sustain strategic partnerships and the overall role of partnership development in health equity.    Key Webinar Features   Participants will have the opportunity to share challenges and strategies for retaining diverse partners and building partner capacity to address emerging issues with a health equity approach.    Presenters  Ivy Jones Turner - For over 20 years, Ivy has provided organizational capacity assistance on health promotion and prevention in substance abuse, suicide, violence, injury, and mental health with nonprofit and community-based organizations, state and faith-based agencies, and school districts. Her capacity building skills include program evaluation, training and technical assistance in program design and implementation, organizational development, partnerships/collaborations, and grant management. Ms. Jones Turner is a Certified Prevention Specialist and holds an MPA from Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government.  Debra Morris – Debra Gardner Morris, an expert in advanced training and technical assistance, is a lead training and technical assistance specialist for Prevention Solutions@EDC. She brings extensive experience in evidence-based prevention strategies, effective methods to address health promotion through an equity lens, school-based prevention, management of large national public health centers, and systems change. Nationwide, she provides coaching to engage and mobilize communities to implement environmental prevention strategies. Morris holds an MPH from Emory University focused on Behavioral Sciences and Health Education. Cannabis remains a Schedule I controlled substance in Idaho, consistent with federal law. However, two bordering states have legalized cannabis for adult use. The purpose of this document is to provide the prevention workforce in Federal Region 10 states (Alaska, Idaho, Oregon and Washington) with information that supports the following: Prevention of youth cannabis use Prevention of adult cannabis misuse (heavy use and/or risky behaviors)   The information in this tool is intended to support capacity development specifically within the prevention workforce by increasing understanding of cannabis regulatory frameworks and policies that can affect prevention of youth cannabis use and harms. This includes by answering questions that Region 10’s prevention workforce may have:   What is cannabis regulation? This report provides information so stakeholders understand who makes policies and what kinds of policies are included in each of the four Region 10 states.   Why are specific policies important for prevention? Key components of cannabis regulatory frameworks, and how each is relevant to prevention, are discussed. Because cannabis regulation is so new, some of what we think is important for prevention is related to research about regulations for tobacco and alcohol.   What is in place in my community right now, and is it good enough? This section describes the current status of each state’s prevention-related cannabis regulations as of June 30, 2020.  Important considerations in assessing regulatory content and advocating for prevention-supportive approaches include how regulations affect vulnerable populations and the potential for unintended consequences. Notably, some local areas (cities, counties, boroughs, or villages) have already passed additional regulations; these are not included in the scope of the report, however, understanding specific state regulations, including what additional regulation is allowed locally, is a starting point for assessing the status in any specific community.   What other options exist? The existing regulations in other states may offer ideas about what is possible to strengthen cannabis regulations. This report also discusses potential policies from research on tobacco and alcohol.   What comes next? Within the discussion about regulatory areas, emerging regulatory issues are also identified. These are topics that community advocates may want to anticipate and become prepared to address, whether they are intended to strengthen or weaken regulations.   View the other resources available in this toolkit.

While evidence-based approaches are highly encouraged in the prevention field, it is very important to make sure strategies you select have both conceptual and practical fit, aligning with the priorities, risk and protective factors, and local issues in your community. Additionally, reviewing and weighing the evidence of effectiveness of proposed strategies gives prevention practitioners scientific support for strategy selection in a comprehensive prevention plan. This webinar will provide an 1) overview of strategic fit and its components, providing a step-by-step process of determining best fit for strategy selection; 2) describe how selecting best fit strategies can be adapted to current conditions with COVID-19; and 3) provide the opportunity to interact with fellow participants to explore the application of these strategic fit components into the work of prevention practitioners. Following the webinar, participants will have the opportunity to register for a learning lab where they will breakout into small work groups to discuss these concepts and how they are implemented locally. This is an opportunity to connect with other prevention practitioners nationally and share ideas and experiences in aligning priorities, selecting strategies using strategic fit, considering the context in which you do prevention and the evidence available.   Objectives Upon completion of this virtual learning experience, participants will be able to: 1. Define conceptual fit and understand the necessity for aligning program design with community needs. 2. Define practical fit and identify opportunities for program adaptations to improve program outcomes. 3. Identify data collection opportunities to determine program or practice effectiveness. 4. Colder June 10, 2020, 1-2 PM EST COURSE DESCRIPTION This webinar developed by the Central East Prevention Technology Transfer Center (CEPTTC) will discuss the impact of the opioid epidemic on the vulnerable communities and the role that religious institutions can play as responders to the opioid crisis. The webinar will share how religious institutions can become part of the prevention workforce to prevent and/or reduce the impact of substance use and misuse on vulnerable communities. LEARNING OBJECTIVES Review the data of how the opioid epidemic has impacted the African American community Discuss the role of the church as first responders/preventionists. PRESENTERS Karl C. Colder is the President of Colder Allied Consulting, LLC. In consultant roles, he serves as the Director of Program Development for Mentor Foundation USA, Law Enforcement Advisor for TAGIT TECH, INC., and Sr. Advisor for EagleForce Associates/Health. Karl also collaborates with Communities, Health Providers, Law Enforcement, Non-Profit Organizations, and other Federal, State and Local Agencies to provide innovative, evidence-based intervention approaches to prevent and reduce substance use and promote health and well-being. He currently serves in the Episcopal Church Co-Chair of the Province III Opioid Task Force, Diocese of Virginia Addiction and Recovery Team, Vice President of Recovery Ministry for the Brotherhood of St. Andrew, and is a Diocese of Virginia Misconduct Prevention Trainer (Safe Church). Karl also serves on the steering committee for the West Virginia Council of Churches Substance Use Disorder Initiative and a member of the Union of Black Episcopalians's (UBE) Mental Health Task Force.

Dr. Powell earned her Ph.D. from Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, School of Social Work, in 2013. She has been conducting research and evaluation on topics relevant to prevention science, environmental strategies, empowerment theory, sustainability, and health disparities for more than 12 years. Dr. Powell currently serves as Principal Investigator and Investigator on multiple externally funded research projects. Much of this work focuses on how individual and environmental strategies can prevent the harmful consequences of substance misuse and abuse, particularly in communities identified with high need and existing health disparities.  Carol Oliver - Carol is the director of Prevention Solutions at EDC, a training and resource hub that is strengthening the substance misuse prevention workforce in communities across the United States.
