Advocacy is an important component of substance misuse prevention. Advocacy is a powerful tool that helps to educate and inform policymakers yet is often viewed with some apprehension due to fears of lobbying. This webinar will address advocacy vs. lobbying and define tangible examples of prevention advocacy to support public health and prevention efforts. Specific strategies will be discussed as examples of what prevention practitioners can and should do to advocate for substance misuse prevention in their communities and states.

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Be able to identify the differences between lobbying and advocacy as it pertains to substance misuse prevention.
  • Be able to identify data sources that can support advocacy efforts in public health.
  • Be able to identify their own priority areas for prevention advocacy.

Community, tribal, jurisdiction, and state-level prevention practitioners and allied health partners and community members located in the Pacific Southwest states and jurisdictions of American Samoa, Arizona, California, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Guam, Hawaii, Nevada, Republic of the Marshall Islands, and the Republic of Palau.
