Advanced Ethics Webinars

Professional ethical standards are based on values. Values are the basic beliefs that an individual thinks to be true and are also seen as guiding principles in one’s life or the basis on which an individual makes a decision. In this webinar series, we will explore an in-depth look at how creating equity in program planning is a fundamental ethical practice. This webinar series was jointly presented by the Building Health Equity and Social Justice, Implementation Science, and Community Coalitions and Collaborators PTTC work groups.

Advanced Ethics Planning Series Session 3: Equity in Data and Evaluation

Advanced Ethics 3

Professional ethical standards and the values they are based on also apply to prevention data-related activities, including needs assessment and evaluation. As prevention professionals working with data, we have a critical role to pursue social change, particularly with and on behalf of vulnerable and oppressed individuals and groups of people. Through prevention needs assessment and evaluation activities, we seek to promote sensitivity to and knowledge about oppression and cultural and ethnic diversity. Prevention professionals strive to ensure access to needed information, services, and resources; equity; and meaningful participation in data-based decision-making activities for all people, while protecting those we serve.

Advanced Ethics Planning Series Session 4: Ethics and Equity in Capacity Building

Advanced Ethics 4

Prevention professionals are well aware of the importance of community engagement in capacity building.  For without the resources of their partners, it is nearly impossible to bring about successful prevention interventions for substance misuse.  However, due to the delicate nature of relationships and power differentials, prevention professionals may find themselves walking carefully around matters of inequity so as to not be seen as too controversial or to lose their “good standing” with power players. This lack of response to injustices only serves to sustain the disparities experienced by certain populations within their communities.  In the discussion of ethics in building capacity, we must consider holding partners and systems accountable to these populations with lived inequitable experiences while utilizing tools to measure and raise the current standing of key stakeholders of our prevention efforts.

The Advanced Ethics Series Session 5: Ethics and Equity in Project Planning Webinar

Advanced Ethics 5

Project planning is a multi-faceted and dynamic step in the prevention implementation process, one that can set the stage for continued success and sustainability. Without a robust and agile plan, implementation and sustainability can be negatively impacted, potentially putting a project at risk. This important step goes beyond using the data gathered from community, and ethical analysis of that data. From including a diverse set of voices and experiences, to balancing funder expectations and community defined outcomes, project planning requires a critical lens to ensure ethical practices and equity are embedded throughout. In this session of the series, we will explore various examples of practical planning processes and practices which can have tremendous positive implications for the communities we serve.
