Special Announcement from the Recruit, Train, and Retain Prevention Workforce Workgroup

Introduction:

The Recruit, Train, and Retain Prevention Workforce Workgroup, which came out of a 2020 Prevention Thought Leaders Meeting (see details in the next paragraph), is conducting a national needs assessment for prevention certification.  This needs assessment consists of two main components, a survey to individual prevention practitioners across the nation, and a survey to the governmental offices for prevention inn states, tribal nations, and jurisdictions. The goal is to learn about the successes and challenges related to prevention certification across the country, to identify areas where further support and technical assistance may be needed to strengthen prevention certification systems, to help further develop the professionalism of the field, and to ensure equitable access to prevention certification to all in the prevention field.

Background Information on the Prevention Thought Leaders Meeting:

The Opioid Response Network (ORN) hosted the Prevention Thought Leaders Meeting to convene leaders in the prevention field. Forty-seven prevention professionals from across the country gathered for the two-day meeting. Participants represented a variety of organizations including The ORN Leadership Team, the National Prevention Network (NPN), the Community Anti-Drug Coalitions of America (CADCA) leadership team and National Advisory Board and the Prevention Technology Transfer Center (PTTC) Network. Subject matter professionals, consultants and national prevention leaders were also present.

Meeting organizers produced a Prevention Thought Leaders Meeting Proceedings Report which provides detailed information about participants, goals and outcomes of the meeting, and challenges and opportunities facing the prevention workforce.

To begin working on the Strategic Plan, PTTC workgroups were created to address different topic areas:

  • Recruit, Train, Retain;
  • Career Paths and Development;
  • Advocacy and Funding;
  • Marketing and Communication

We want to learn about experiences around prevention certification, from those working in the substance use prevention field.  The survey aims to gauge what is working and what is not regarding prevention certification, as well as, to identify opportunities to strengthen prevention certification while also increasing access to it.  The survey should take approximately 5-7 minutes to complete.

Please complete it as soon as possible, but no later than September 29th by 11:59 p.m.  Data collected from this survey will be collated and analyzed in aggregate and any reporting will also be done in aggregate, with individual responses deidentified. Please feel free to forward this message to others working in substance use prevention.

To learn more about the prevention certification requirements in your state, or in other states and jurisdictions across the country, visit the following certification map on the Prevention Technology Transfer Center Network website: https://pttcnetwork.org/centers/prevention-specialist-certification/prevention-specialist-certification-states

If you have any questions about this survey, please do not hesitate to reach out to Workgroup Co-Chair, Scott Gagnon: [email protected]

Thank you for taking the time to help identify how the prevention workforce can further be supported.

Sincerely,

The PTTC Network and the Recruit, Train, and Retain Prevention Workforce Workgroup
