The college years are a time when students may experiment with drugs for the first time. This is why college is the ideal setting to implement substance misuse prevention strategies. She has in-depth knowledge and training experience in the SPF process, including specific work in evaluation, sustainability, assessment, and working with diverse populations. She provides services to a wide range of prevention and behavioral health specialists.is an expert in substance misuse prevention, an accomplished training and technical assistance (T/TA) provider, and a certified senior prevention specialist. She brings extensive expertise in supporting, designing, and delivering engaging professional learning, and providing comprehensive T/TA for states and community-level prevention professionals. Jenny Damask Jenny Damask has worked in college student health and AOD prevention for 18 years, currently at the University of Wisconsin. In her role she helps campus partners strategize and evaluate changes to systems, policies, and environments. She has a brilliant grasp of the public health approach to preventing issues with alcohol, drugs, tobacco, and hazing. She developed several successful educational programs and promotional campaigns involving social norms clarification and bystander intervention. Jenny holds a BS from the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh in Human Services, a MS in College Student Personnel Administration from the University of Central Missouri, and an Ed.D. from the University of Missouri-Columbia in Educational Leadership and Policy Analysis.   The Great Lakes A/MH/PTTC is offering this training for individuals working in HHS Region 5: IL, IN, MI, MN, OH, WI. This training is being provided in response to a need identified by Region 5 stakeholders.

This interactive training will instruct on how to implement the National CLAS Standards within behavioral health care settings to build organizational capacity and provide culturally informed and linguistically conducive services that enhance recovery and wellness pathways, integrate strategies to reduce racial and ethnic disparities and advance behavioral health equity and inclusion for both communities and the professionals that provide care.   Presenter Diana Padilla, MCPC, CARC, CASAC-T, is a Research Project Manager at New York State Psychiatric Institute, Columbia University Medical Center. She is a senior staff trainer for the Northeast & Caribbean Addiction Transfer Technology Center Network (NeC-ATTC), and a member of the ASAP-NYCB Trainer Registry. The Collaboration Continuum: Connecting Across Fields to Prevent Suicide and Substance Misuse September 15, 2022   Learning Session Overview and Objectives We all know that collaboration and partnerships are the key to success in prevention efforts, including connections between closely related fields such as suicide and substance misuse prevention. This session will provide an overview of a framework for collaboration, the SPRC Collaboration Continuum, which provides tools and resources for prevention programs to strengthen connections and amplify the impact of their collective efforts. After hearing the story of how a regional coalition has engaged community partners in prevention efforts spanning both suicide and substance misuse prevention fields, participants will have the opportunity to examine their own partnership efforts and identify ways they can strengthen collaboration on the ground. By the end of this learning session, participants will be able to: Describe the SPRC Collaboration Continuum and its four levels of collaboration, as well as how to access related tools to strengthen their own collaboration. List new strategies to overcome common barriers to collaboration in their own prevention efforts. Develop a plan for at least one way they can strengthen their own suicide prevention efforts.   Presenter: Ellyson Stout, MS, State and Community Suicide Prevention Lead at EDC, specializes in public health and suicide prevention with diverse populations. In her role directing EDC’s Suicide Prevention Resource Center (SPRC) contract, she leads a team working to build suicide prevention capacity and infrastructure nationwide at the state, community, health system, and national levels. Stout has over 20 years of experience in public health, cross-sector collaboration, and health communications, including 15 years working with youth suicide prevention efforts in school, clinical, state and community settings. She has served on numerous expert panels and committees, including most recently the advisory group for the Surgeon General’s Call to Action to Implement the National Strategy for Suicide Prevention. Elly presents regularly on suicide prevention around the country, and has co-authored articles published in Journal of Primary Prevention and Journal of Rural Mental Health. Center for Pediatric Behavioral Health at Cleveland Clinic Dr. Marilyn Sampilo is a clinical psychologist who specializes in integrated behavioral health and health disparities among diverse and marginalized populations. She received her doctoral degree in clinical child psychology from the University of Kansas, a Master of Public Health with a concentration in social and behavioral aspects of public health from the University of Kansas Medical Center, and an executive certificate in social impact strategy from the University of Pennsylvania, all of which have allowed her to develop extensive experience in prevention, health promotion and intervention for diverse populations, particularly the Hispanic and Latinx population. Dr. Sampilo is also well-versed in public policy from her tenure as a health equity and cultural competency administrator at the state level where she led the agency’s behavioral health equity initiatives and consulted with state agencies on issues of equity and diversity particularly related to racially and ethnically diverse, immigrant and refugee populations. She is currently a psychologist in the Center for Pediatric Behavioral Health at Cleveland Clinic where she works in integrated behavioral health within primary care. She currently serves as the health equity and social justice lead for the Center and is chair of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the Pediatrics Institute at Cleveland Clinic. She also works with various local, state, regional, and national entities on training and professional development in the areas of health equity, diversity, and cultural proficiency.

Center for Pediatric Behavioral Health at Cleveland Clinic Dr. Marilyn Sampilo is a clinical psychologist who specializes in integrated behavioral health and health disparities among diverse and marginalized populations. She received her doctoral degree in clinical child psychology from the University of Kansas, a Master of Public Health with a concentration in social and behavioral aspects of public health from the University of Kansas Medical Center, and an executive certificate in social impact strategy from the University of Pennsylvania, all of which have allowed her to develop extensive experience in prevention, health promotion and intervention for diverse populations, particularly the Hispanic and Latinx population. Dr. Sampilo is also well-versed in public policy from her tenure as a health equity and cultural competency administrator at the state level where she led the agency’s behavioral health equity initiatives and consulted with state agencies on issues of equity and diversity particularly related to racially and ethnically diverse, immigrant and refugee populations. She is currently a psychologist in the Center for Pediatric Behavioral Health at Cleveland Clinic where she works in integrated behavioral health within primary care. She currently serves as the health equity and social justice lead for the Center and is chair of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the Pediatrics Institute at Cleveland Clinic. She also works with various local, state, regional, and national entities on training and professional development in the areas of health equity, diversity, and cultural proficiency.

    Determinants of Health 360: Social, Commercial, and Legal Considerations for Preventing Substance Misuse   Webinar Date: January 20, 2022   Webinar Slides Webinar Slides for Determinants of Health 360: Social, Commercial, and Legal Considerations for Preventing Substance Misuse   Overview Risky behaviors such as substance misuse don’t occur in a vacuum--the environments in which we live, work, and play influence our choices and behaviors. Exploring Social, Commercial, and Legal Determinants of Health (DOH) can help us consider new ways to impact these environments to prevent substance misuse. This expert panel presentation will discuss ways communities, commerce, and legal systems contribute to substance misuse and how prevention practitioners can support positive DOH to create health and wellness throughout their communities. Bring your questions and experiences, as the panel presentation will conclude with a question and answer/discussion session.   Objectives By the end of this training, participants will be able to: • Describe the concepts of Social, Commercial, and Legal DOH • Name at least one way each can contribute to substance misuse • Name two strategies prevention practitioners can use to support positive DOH   Audience Community, tribal, jurisdiction, and state-level prevention practitioners and allied health partners and community members located in the Pacific Southwest states and jurisdictions of American Samoa, Arizona, California, Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Guam, Hawaii, Nevada, Republic of the Marshall Islands, and the Republic of Palau.   Presenter Paul Devereux, PhD, MPH, is an Associate Professor in Social/Behavioral Health at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Public Health. His scholarship explores social and behavioral determinants on health and well-being. Specific research topics include behavioral responses to the COVID-19 pandemic, community-based approaches to cancer screening interventions among diverse populations, how to maintain social support in people with disabilities and parenting adolescents, and emotional health and regulation in older adults. In the approach to his work, Dr. Devereux examines the social and ecological factors that affect population health and how one’s position within the social structure is linked to health outcomes. His research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, the CDC, and other state and federal public and private sources. He is the former President of the Nevada Public Health Association and was named Nevada’s Public Health Leader of the Year in 2005.     Eric Crosbie, PhD, MA, is a political scientist who examines commercial determinants of health and public health policy. His research focuses on non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and examines how commercial industries like tobacco and food and beverage industries are a key driver of the NCD epidemic and how they influence NCD regulations. Dr. Crosbie's research is local in analyzing smoke-free environments and sugar-sweetened beverage taxation regulations in the U.S. as well as global in examining tobacco and nutrition packaging and labeling policies and the impact of trade on health in Latin America, the Caribbean, Europe, Africa, and the Pacific. Crosbie has both local and international experience collaborating with health organizations and health advocates to educate and disseminate academic research findings to policymakers, including publishing research in Spanish to reach wider audiences. Overall his research is multi-disciplinary combining elements of public health, political science, international relations, economics, law, and business to examine public health policy both locally and globally.   Matthew Moore, JD, MPH, MA, is a Teaching Assistant Professor for the University of Nevada, Reno School of Public Health. A Public Health Attorney, Matthew worked for several years in government and in the nonprofit sector. At the US Department of Health and Human Services Office for Civil Rights, he worked with diverse communities to ensure equitable access to health care and to exercise oversight over various covered entities pursuant to Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act, and other federal civil rights laws. More recently, Matthew worked as a nonprofit attorney, focusing on tobacco control and obesity prevention policy and providing direct legal technical assistance to state and local government agencies, environmental groups, legal aid organizations, and other community stake holders. Matthew’s current research agenda focuses on the ethical and moral dimensions of policy and the law on poverty and economic inequity, as well as on pedagogy in higher education. This webinar series will illustrate the common goals within the fields of prevention, recovery, and harm reduction such as: reducing the adverse health and social consequences of chaotic substance use, demonstrate the multiple points of intervention across the spectrum of substance use, and how to develop coordinated strategies at individual and community levels to address chaotic substance use. Throughout the webinar, we will be taking a close look at how race and social determinants of health influence the frequency, access, and type of services provided to diverse populations.     Learning Objectives - By attending this webinar series participants will be able to Describe the intersections between prevention, recovery, and harm reduction approaches   Define common terms used in prevention, recovery, and harm reduction  Develop specific ways in which prevention, recovery community, and harm reduction practitioners can better support one another
