Dr. Emily Kline is a clinical psychologist and assistant professor of psychiatry at Boston University School of Medicine. She serves as the Director of Psychological Services for the Wellness and Recovery After Psychosis team and leads the Motivational Interviewing for Loved Ones lab at Boston Medical Center. Her research focuses on early course psychosis, adolescent and young adult mental health, and parent-focused interventions. Dr. Kline is the author of The School of Hard Talks: How to Have Real Conversations with Your (Almost Grown) Kids and the creator of The School of Hard Talks Online. She has published dozens of articles appearing in a range of peer-reviewed scholarly journals, textbooks, and popular magazines, and she has spoken with audiences all over the world about mental health and interpersonal communication. Dr. Kline completed her bachelor’s degree at Haverford College, her master’s and doctoral degrees at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, and her clinical and post-doctoral training at Harvard Medical School. How Primary Care Can Address Youth Substance Use Disorders Jim Winkle, MPH April 13, 2023, 1:00pm-3:00pm EST COURSE DESCRIPTION Medical and behavioral health professionals who work in primary care are in a unique position to help adolescents living with substance use disorders (SUDs), but often feel at a loss how to do so effectively, in a limited amount of time, and without conveying judgement. Adolescents living with SUDs, meanwhile, may face stigma from health professionals, and may not relate to a singular focus on treatment programs. This presentation will improve the ability of primary care professionals to screen for SUDs with adolescent patients and perform a four-step brief intervention model that enhances the motivation of patients to reduce their risk of harm. As a result, clinicians will be better able to help these patients forge their own pathway to recovery. Building Great Rapport: How to Engage Patients with Unhealthy Substance Use Jim Winkle, MPH August 17, 2021, 1-3 PM EST COURSE DESCRIPTION By adopting a new approach, clinicians can greatly improve how they engage with these patients. This presentation will improve providers' ability to engage and build rapport by challenging assumptions that lead to stigma, applying principles of harm reduction, and performing a four-step brief intervention model that enhances the motivation of patients to decrease their risk of illness and death. As a result, clinicians who once considered these patient visits "difficult" can begin to perceive them as valuable opportunities to help patients adopt safer behaviors and forge their pathway to recovery. Culturally-Informed Motivational Interviewing Skills for Addressing Substance Misuse for African American Males Jessica Young Brown May 27, 2020, 1-2 PM EST   COURSE DESCRIPTION This webinar will discuss cultural considerations for using motivational interviewing as a clinical tool with African American men who use substances. Special attention will be given to the impact of generational trauma and how they impacts substance use behaviors, engagement in the clinical relationship, and responses to clinical interventions. LEARNING OBJECTIVES Understand how motivational interviewing can be used as a framework for addressing substance use concerns Understand how generational trauma can impact/exacerbate substance use Define how issues of generational trauma/cultural mistrust interrupt stages/processes in this model (ex: impact of nondirective style, the importance of trust in relationships, special considerations for the planning process) Improve skills and strategies for executing culturally competent MI PRESENTER Dr. Jessica Young Brown is a licensed clinical psychologist in Richmond, VA. Talking about Sex as Prevention: A Novel Use of Motivational Interviewing Julie Tenille, PHD April 15, 2020, 1-2:15 PM EST   COURSE DESCRIPTION Expression of sexuality and intimacy is not just a human right but fundamentally contributes to overall health and well-being. For persons with behavioral health conditions, sexuality and intimacy are inextricably tied to mental health recovery and quality of life. Unfortunately, the provider workforce (nursing, social work, medicine, among others) is not presently equipped to routinely engage in productive and guiding discussions about sexuality and intimacy with persons living with behavioral health conditions. Missed opportunities have great implications for prevention with a population more likely to be infected with HIV, hepatitis B and C, experience intimate partner violence, and contend with co-morbid substance use disorders. Research suggests brief education programs about sexual issues can result in sustained practice change if skills are integrated more deliberately to the extent that providers gain more confidence to skillfully engage in conversations about sexuality as a part of holistic care. Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a recovery-oriented evidence-based practice broadly useful in all health disciplines, applicable in a wide variety of contexts, with a variety of populations, and related to a vast typology of behavioral conversations. In response to research and advocacy, a training toolkit was published that employs the use of MI in experientially teaching providers the skills of MI and the practice of having conversations about sexuality and intimacy. This webinar highlights the contents of this training toolkit and underscores relevant skills for prevention activities. LEARNING OBJECTIVES Describe benefits of sexuality and intimacy for persons with behavioral health conditions. Explain provider barriers to communication about sexuality and intimacy with persons with behavioral health conditions. List strategies (informed by MI) for overcoming barriers to communication about sexuality and intimacy.   PRESENTER Dr. Julie Tennille is an Associate Professor at West Chester University in the Graduate Department of Social Work and a member of the international Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers. She has taught across the graduate practice curriculum for over 15 years and presently teaches a 5-day elective course on Motivational Interviewing (MI). Dr. Tennille has worked in direct practice, services research, and administration in public mental health and HIV/AIDS services for over 25 years. She has published several articles on Field Instructors Extending EBP Learning in Dyads (FIELD), an MI infused teaching intervention, aimed at synchronizing evidence based practice competencies among field instructors and their social work students. In collaboration with the Temple University Collaborative on Community Inclusion, Dr. Tennille has developed a training toolkit for mental health providers toward enhancing their ability to have discussions with clients about sexuality, intimacy, and dating.
