  Webinar Description How we as prevention professionals communicate our prevention messages to our intended audience is key to our success in reaching sustainable long term substance abuse prevention outcomes.  While we have many tools at our disposal, harnessing the power of these tools to convey our prevention message and inspiring our audience to see their place at the table is how we know that our communication strategy is effective.     During this two-part series, we: Reviewed communication goals in prevention and dug into the “who” and the “what” as it relates to promoting our prevention message(s) Explored best practices for creating slides, handouts, and newsletters to support prevention efforts Identified practices that help persuade our target audience to engage in our initiative and take action   Session 2 is an opportunity to review using tools such as newsletters, handouts and slides.   Presenters  Clara McCurdy-Kirlis is a multilingual communications and project management professional and has over 15 years of experience in project development, implementation, and management. She has held lead roles in health and education instructional design for adult learners, e-learning design and delivery, higher education curricula development, and interdisciplinary project coordination. McCurdy-Kirlis has also led communities of practice (CoP) with an emphasis on facilitating dialogue in a safe space where participants can share successes, challenges, and brainstorm solutions together.   IC&RC Prevention Specialist Certification: What, Why, and How A Panel Presentation May 10, 2023   Panel Presentation Description Regardless of the service, those seeking a provider want to be sure that that person is both competent and ethical. This is especially important when the services are human services, such as prevention of substance misuse and mental illness. The International Certification and Reciprocity Consortium is the only organization that certifies prevention providers. Featuring a representative from each state or jurisdiction’s certification board, this panel presentation will discuss the need and process of becoming certified as a Prevention Specialist as well as highlight information about board-specific requirements and application procedures. She was the founder and for 30 years the executive director of a statewide, multi-service prevention program and a founder of Rhode Island’s largest non-profit treatment program. In addition to her prevention work, she was the founding director of the Institute for Addiction Recovery at Rhode Island College. Sandra is a delegate to and the former Prevention Committee Co-Chair of the IC&RC. She is a member of the faculty and advisory board of the New England School of Addiction Studies, a member of the Advisory Board for the National Prevention Technology Transfer Center (PTTC), the National Hispanic/Latino PTTC and the New England PTTC. Sandra is a co-author of SAMHSA’s Substance Abuse Prevention Specialist Training (SAPST) and its Basic and Advanced Prevention Ethics as well as many other courses and webinars. She has previously trained members of the US National Guard in prevention planning. Sandra received her Bachelor’s degree in psychology from Boston College (Newton), and her Master’s degree in counselor education from Rhode Island College. This product was developed as a handout to be shared with people unfamiliar with the substance use prevention field. It is intended to be an informational tool, summarizing what prevention is and why it is important. The product describes the prevention framework and the core principles that guide prevention efforts. It also provides key facts illustrating the scope of substance use issues in the United States and the value of prevention. It also describes the many forms that prevention can take.

The process of selecting prevention strategies that best fit the needs and assets, readiness, and capacity of a community begins with identifying evidence-based interventions, as catalogued in registries or databases of evidence-based programs, policies, and interventions. Steve Miller joined the Mid-America PTTC in November 2021 assuming the role from Dave Closson, who has ventured into consulting, training and of course podcasting for himself. We wish him all the success and hope to have in back on a future episode here.  Steve has a long history of supporting the efforts of the Drug Endangered Children initiative in Southwest Missouri, which compliments our focus area here at Mid-America. The Southeast PTTC Prevention Workforce Development Suite Training 1: Prevention Fundamentals Time: 2 hours Download Resource Guide Description: The Prevention Fundamentals training provides an overview of the key concepts in substance use and misuse prevention. Participants will be introduced to concepts of the public health approach to prevention, the continuum of care and the role of coalitions and providers in community-based prevention efforts. Currently, Mr. Johnson is working with Ohio’s Partnership for Success Strategic Prevention Framework (PFS- SPF) SAMHSA funded statewide grant supporting twelve (12) rural Appalachian counties in developing coalitions to reduce the opioid crisis. His team has also provided training to SAMHSA Minority AIDS and HIV new grantees since 2010. Dave Shavel has extensive experience in the substance abuse prevention field at the community, state and federal levels as a community organizer, coalition director, trainer and technical assistance provider, researcher, and state prevention manager.  Dave specializes in technical assistance and training in the areas of strategic planning; needs, resource and readiness assessment; prevention program planning, implementation and evaluation; promoting youth involvement; and, community and state capacity building.

  The Central East PTTC has created the Substance Use Prevention Resources for Use During a Pandemic guide to help prevention professionals navigate this challenging time.  "The pandemic, and its related social and economic impacts, have the potential to significantly increase many risk factors for substance use, including: anxiety, stress, depression, trauma, and grief. It may also weaken some protective factors against substance use, such as peer social networks and availability of social activities. Prevention professionals need to be prepared to address these factors now and in the future, once the immediate danger from the virus has passed. Fortunately, there are numerous resources available to support prevention work."
