Using Environmental Strategies to Reduce Substance Use Josh Esrick, MPP, and Emily Patton, MSc, PgDip February 25, 2020, 1-2 PM EST COURSE DESCRIPTION This webinar, developed by the Central East PTTC, will describe the importance of environmental strategies and how they differ from individual-focused prevention programs. Environmental strategies are prevention interventions that address factors related to the context within which individuals make decisions about initiating and continuing substance use. Researchers have identified numerous risk and protective factors for engaging in substance use, which are often categorized by a socio-ecological model. Environmental strategies primarily seek to address factors found at the community and society levels of the model. The webinar will discuss the different types of environmental strategies and provide examples of evidence-based strategies. It will also walk through examples of collaborative partners needed to implement environmental strategies and the pre-implementation work that preventionists will need to complete. It includes conducting additional research to learn more about the risk and protective factors that are driving substance use and the available interventions with evidence of effectiveness in addressing them. This webinar will discuss these topics and the importance of developing a logic model that links them all together. It will also walk through ways that technology can be used to support the planning process. Young adults are an important population for substance use prevention efforts. This webinar will review the process of developing an evidence- based guide on substance use prevention for young adults, including: reviewing the literature and science examining emerging and best practices determining key components of peer-reviewed models that effect policies and programs, and identifying challenges and gaps in implementation. Presenter Kim Dash, Ph.D., is a senior research scientist with Education Development Center. Her work focuses on translating research and practice on disease and risk prevention into evidence-informed interventions that improve public health.

The Mountain Plains - Prevention Technology Transfer Center (PTTC) conducted a training and technical assistance (T&TA) needs survey distributed to each of the six states (Colorado, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah, and Wyoming) in our region.  The goal of this survey was to understand the T&TA needs of the prevention professionals in our states.  We developed the survey during December 2018 through April 2019 and it was administered from April through May of 2019.  A total of 267 prevention professionals in Region 8 started the survey; 21 of these individuals did not complete the survey.  After removing the incomplete responses, data collected from 246 participants were reviewed.  Respondents were predominantly: Female (87.40%), White (92.43%) and not of Hispanic origin (97.10%) Between the ages of 35 and 44 (30.86%) Residing in rural communities (67.77%) Working at a community coalition (24.69%), and Working as a substance use prevention specialist (50.22%)   Participants were asked to indicate the priority/need for training and/or technical assistance (TA) on a variety of topics. Each topic was rated on a 5-point scale. The top five training needs based on the percentage of respondents indicating it as a “Very Interested” included: Adolescent substance use prevention Alcohol prevention Marijuana prevention Changing social norms Connecting adolescent development with prevention programming

Translations     Hispanic and Latinos are expected to reach one quarter of the U.S population by the year 2050, and are at a disproportionate risk for negative behavioral health outcomes such as substance use and alcoholism (National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 2007), sexually transmitted illnesses such as HIV (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2007), and mental health concerns (Prado et al., 2006). With this knowledge, researchers have developed Evidence Based Practices that focuses on culturally based risk factors within the Latino community. Familia Adelante: Multi-risk Reduction Behavioral Health Prevention for Latino/Hispanic Youth and Families (FA) addresses the impact of acculturative stress on Latino communities and equips Latino-serving organizations with a psycho-educational curriculum that helps Latino families manage negative behavioral outcomes associated with stress exposure, and their families in family and peer communication, substance abuse prevention, HIV knowledge and perceptions of harm about high-risk behavior, and positive school bonding and behavior. Familias Unidas: is a family-centered, evidence-based substance use and sexual risk behavior prevention intervention for Hispanic youth and their families. Familias Unidas is a multi-level intervention that targets risk (e.g., poor adolescent communication) and protective factors (e.g., parental involvement) at the family, peer, and school level.

Preventing Opioid Misuse and Opioid Overdose: Moving Upstream Date October 31, 2019   Description The “all hands on deck” call to address the opioid crisis has challenged our efforts to implement primary prevention that complements other efforts to address the crisis across the spectrum of behavioral health care services. This interactive webinar will explore ways to expand prevention to move our work more upstream--beyond preventing deaths from opioid overdoses to preventing the misuse that leads to those overdoses. This webinar will include an overview of 2018 NSDUH data and the risk and protective factors associated with opioid misuse and overdose, as well as a range of promising and evidence-based strategies to consider as part of creating a comprehensive plan to move the work of prevention upstream. The webinar will also explore community mobilization strategies and ways to build additional partnerships.   Learning Objectives • Describe what is known in the research about risk and protective factors associated with opioid misuse. • List a variety of interventions that prevent opioid misuse and overdoses. • List strategies that have strong evidence of effectiveness and those that have emerging or promising evidence.   Presenters Kevin Haggerty, MSW, PhD specializes in prevention programs at the community, school, and family levels. For more than 30 years he has focused on developing innovative ways to organize the scientific knowledge base for prevention so that parents, communities, and schools can better identify, assess, and prioritize customized approaches that meet their needs. He has an extensive research background in the intersection of biological and environmental risks for drug abuse in emerging adults and is an expert on substance abuse and delinquency prevention. Additionally, Dr. Haggerty is an investigator for the Community Youth Development Study, which tests the effectiveness of the Communities That Care program. Michelle Frye-Spray, MS, CPS is a Project Manager at the Center for the Application of Substance Abuse Technologies at the University of Nevada, Reno. Michelle leverages her passion for upstream prevention with over 25 years of prevention-related experiences working with schools, communities, states, tribal organizations, and jurisdictions. Her skills include training design and facilitation; community capacity-building; and navigating culturally complex communities and systems to oversee the delivery of prevention services that are culturally appropriate and audience-specific. Alyssa O'Hair, MPH, MA, CPS is a Senior Manager, Workforce Development at the Center for the Application of Substance Abuse Technologies at the University of Nevada, Reno. With over 10 years of experience providing training and technical assistance, she currently serves as the Project Director for the Pacific Southwest Prevention Technology Transfer Center, which aims to build the skills of the substance abuse prevention workforce. Facts Vs Myths Information Sheet: This information sheet covers 7 common myths or misunderstandings as related to marijuana. These include myths on addiction, impairment, and other health effects. Each of the 7 myths is countered with the current evidence, including citations. Josh has extensive experience in substance use prevention; researching, writing, and presenting on best practice and knowledge development publications, briefs, and reference guides; and developing and providing training and technical assistance to numerous organizations at the Federal, state, and local level. He developed numerous SAMHSA Center for the Application of Prevention Technologies’ (CAPT) products on strategies to prevent opioid misuse and overdose, risk and protective factors for substance use, youth substance use prevention strategies, youth substance use trends, emerging substance use trends, the potential regulations surrounding marijuana legalization, as well as numerous other topics.   Lauren Pappacena, MSW is a Research Associate with Carnevale Associates. Lauren has a background in criminal justice and juvenile justice research specifically as it relates to evidence-based programs and practices spanning criminal justice topics, including corrections, law enforcement, reentry, and courts. Currently, she assists with training evaluations for NADCP and the PTTC, where she brings her experience with quantitative and qualitative analysis and data visualization. With a strong interest in policy analysis, research translation, data collection, and analytic writing, Ms. Pappacena is published in the Journal of Human Rights and Social Work for her analysis of national early-release laws.

Measuring Cultural Factors Associated with Substance Misuse and Mental Health in American Indian and Alaska Native Populations provides information on measures that prevention practitioners and evaluators can use when evaluating substance misuse prevention programs that include cultural elements.
