During these unprecedented times resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, people are feeling overwhelmed with long work hours, caring for family, and frequently changing information. As people try to manage uncertainty about the future, health concerns, financial instability, and access to resources, it becomes imperative to take time for self-care. The Pacific Southwest Prevention Technology Transfer Center (PTTC) has summarized recommendations and compiled a list of resources for self-care from reputable sources for you to practice and take care of YOU!   Recommended Tips to Take Care of Yourself Physical Health Fuel your body by eating a healthy, well-balanced diet and drinking plenty of water. Aim to get regular sleep and rest (at least 7-8 hours) Exercise every day. Taking care of your body helps you feel better mentally, too. While sheltering in that doesn’t mean your exercise routine needs to end, it may just need to be different. Take a family walk after dinner, but follow social distancing guidelines. Do some stretches at your desk while you’re working from home. Aerobic exercise releases endorphins, which are the natural substances that help you maintain a positive attitude. Take deep breaths and stretch often. Avoid risky behaviors, such as misusing alcohol and other substances, and ignoring public health recommendations. Mental Health Create a sense of structure and routine in daily life. Focus on things you can control. Use technology to maintain social connections with your loved ones. Consider a regular check-in schedule to give you something to look forward to. Engage in relaxing activities. Listen to music, read books, or try a new hobby. Consume reliable news sources that report facts, and avoid media that sensationalizes emotions. Lean on your personal beliefs and faith for support.   How can I stay informed without becoming anxious? Take a Break from the News Media. While it is important to stay current about the public health emergency, avoid excessive exposure to media coverage. This includes watching, reading or listening to news stories, even on social media. The Mountain Plains Mental Health Technology Transfer Center and the Mountain Plains Prevention Technology Transfer Center collaborated to host a six-part webinar series, Suicide Prevention Across the Educational Continuum. Throughout the series, participants are provided with information related to suicide prevention and intervention for youth, young adults, and college students. Crisis Response Planning for Suicidal Patients: an Introduction A widely-used strategy for managing acute suicide risk is the contract for safety, also known as the no-suicide contract. Despite its widespread use across mental health and medical settings, accumulating consensus is that this approach may be ineffective. Alternative strategies such as crisis response planning or the related safety planning intervention have therefore been proposed. Written on an index card, the crisis response plan outlines simple steps for a suicidal individual to follow when in a crisis. Results of a recently completed randomized clinical trial show that crisis response planning reduces suicide attempts by 75% as compared to the contract for safety, thereby supporting the method’s efficacy. The purpose of this presentation is to provide an overview of crisis response planning, and to differentiate the method from other, less effective means for managing suicide risk. World Class Resources to Discover Genetic Risks for Suicide Death  Suicide leads to over 47,000 preventable deaths annually in the U.S. alone. In addition, suicide has increased by 33% in the U.S. in the last two decades. While environment plays a critical role, suicide has a strong genetic component. With the unique resources available to the Utah Suicide Research Program, we have the opportunity to make significant contributions to the understanding of this genetic aspect of suicide risk, with the ultimate goal of development of personalized interventions. Suicide Assessment and Response for K-12 Populations Responding to mental health crisis and risk of suicide in a school setting presents unique challenges and considerations for mental health practitioners, educators, and parents. Participants in this session will learn recommended best practices for assessing children and adolescents for suicide and initiating appropriate responses to youth experiencing thoughts of suicide in a K-12 school setting. Special attention is given to common screening and assessment tools used in school settings, best practices for utilizing an interdisciplinary team approach to respond to youth experiencing thoughts of suicide in a school setting, and ways to identify risk and protective factors for youth and adolescents at risk of suicide. Providing SUD services during a pandemic requires a mix of disaster preparedness, safety precautions, telehealth, and ethics. During her tenure as a leader in SUD treatment, Sheila Weix has been involved with emergencies related to the HIV epidemic, 9/11, and the 2008 economic collapse. She is currently applying this experience in an outpatient treatment service that includes medication-assisted treatment in rural Wisconsin during the COVID19 pandemic. Explore several models of laboratory research on drug misuse and examine how key findings from laboratory research provide evidence for major prevention and treatment effort About Michael Nader, Ph.D. Michael A. Nader, Ph.D. is a behavioral neuropharmacologist with research interest in the areas of substance abuse, impulsivity, brain dopamine receptor function and animal models of human disease. His research examines individual differences in drug effects, highlighting sex differences, social rank and drug history as important organismal variables that influence outcome. He studies cocaine, nicotine, THC, oxycodone and methamphetamine in models of drug reinforcement, cognition and the study of physiological consequences to chronic drug treatment using telemetry devices. For nearly 30 years, his laboratory has utilized an extremely novel animal model involving nonhuman primate social behavior and intravenous drug self-administration; the original studies involving socially housed male monkeys was recognized with a MERIT Award from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA). Dr. Nader has served on the Board of Directors for College on Problems of Drug Dependence, is the past-chair of the Behavioral Pharmacology Division at the American Society of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics and is a past member of NIDA Council. He has been at Wake Forest School of Medicine since 1992 and has mentored 4 post-doctoral fellows, 11 Ph.D. students, 2 M.S. students and served on 26 dissertation committees. Dr. Nader is past Director of the Graduate Program in Physiology and Pharmacology, past Chair of the Dean’s Research Advisory Committee at Wake Forest School of Medicine and has had over 60 graduate and undergraduate students participate in laboratory rotations. In 2013 he gave a TEDx talk on US drug policy and the benefits of animal research. He was also the recipient of the 2015 College on Problems of Drug Dependence (CPDD) Mentorship Award.

About the Presenter Fabricia Prado, LCSW Licensed Clinical Social Worker Fabricia Prado is a licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in the state of Georgia. She obtained her master's degree in Social Work from Kennesaw State University. Fabricia also holds a bachelor’s and a master’s degree in Psychology from Pontifical Catholic University of Goiás, PUC-GO, Brazil. She has been working with the Latino community in Georgia since her graduate internship program in 2010. Currently, Fabricia has been working with the National Hispanic & Latino PTTC and ATTC under their cultural and linguistic approach to expand their training resources and webinars to include Brazilian Portuguese and Spanish. Fabricia has obtained certification as an ACE Interface Master Trainer and through the NHL PTTC and is working to increase community awareness of the prevalence of ACEs and its public health impact utilizing evidence-based approaches for building resiliency in the Hispanic and Latino organizations and communities.

What are the statistics on teen dating violence among Latino and Hispanic youth across the US? Teen dating violence can be prevented by learning warning signs and red flags that lead to abusive relationships. Setting boundaries early in a relationship may help prevent a teenager from becoming a victim of teen dating violence. Victims of dating violence may turn to substances to try to cope with the pain, shame and guilt. Mrs. McDaniel is a bilingual therapist working with specific treatment of co-occurring substance use disorders and posttraumatic stress, addiction, and mental illness, leading both English and Spanish groups, educating the community as well as individual counseling. She serves on the board of the Colorado Association of Addiction Professionals (CAAP) and facilitator for Mending the Soul (MTS) groups for women survivors of abuse. Mrs. McDaniel earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Human Services with emphases in Domestic Violence Counseling and Addiction Counseling from the Metropolitan State University of Denver in 2013. She interned with the Center for Trauma and Resilience, formerly known as Denver Center for Crime Victims (DCCV), and later joined the Colorado Organization of Victim Assistance (COVA) as their Human Trafficking Case Manager.
