This webinar will explore common risk factors for mental health and substance use disorders.   The presentation is roughly divided into two evidence-based approaches to stigma-reduction and education:  Part 1 includes a personal testimony of co-occurring substance use disorder and mental health diagnoses.  Part 2 details the common risk factors and provides context for preventing and treating co-occurring disorders   Learning Objectives:  To compare risk factors for mental health and substance use disorders To apply research-informed approaches to preventing and/or supporting recovery from mental health and/or substance use disorders   About the Presenter:   Dr. Alex Elswick joined the Department of Family Sciences at the University of Kentucky in 2020 as an Assistant Extension Professor for Substance Use Prevention and Recovery.  He began his journey with the department as a graduate student in 2015, where he earned his Master’s and PhD and later served Family and Consumer Sciences Extension as an Extension Associate and as an Extension Specialist. Alex Elswick is a tireless advocate for people who use drugs and people with substance use disorders.  He currently serves the University of Kentucky as an Assistant Extension Professor for Substance Use Prevention and Recovery. He is a trained researcher and therapist, but most importantly, Alex is himself a person in long term recovery from the chronic disease of addiction.

Preventing Suicide in the Latino Community - This webinar will provide an overview of suicide prevention with the intention of encouraging participants to be available to prevent suicide within the people they interact with. Facilitator will discuss warning signs and risk factors for suicide. National data, youth data, including suicide among Latinos and other relevant data will be presented. The webinar will discuss the effects of this “forever decision” which is preventable. The facilitator will present her experience as the suicide prevention project coordinator at CETPA Inc. Lastly, suicide prevention resources that are easy to implement and culturally based practices that have proven to work in the efforts of preventing suicide will be discussed. My guests for this episode are Dr. Evelyn Higgins and Jacqueline Hall from Wired for Addiction.  Dr. Higgins, an international expert in the epidemiology of addiction, works to inspire communities to talk openly about mental health and addiction from a solutions-oriented perspective. I Didn’t Know That! The Scoop on Youth Gaming and Gambling Heather Eshleman, MPH, John Schmidt, BS, CPRS, and Maricel Bernardo, MSM-HCA March 2, 2023, 1:00pm-2:30pm EST COURSE DESCRIPTION With games such as League of Legends, Fortnite, and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, youth, and young adults are often competitors or viewers of these popular games through E-Sports tournaments. In addition, within the last few years, sports betting has become legal in 32 states, including all the Central East PTTC states. These activities are heavily advertised through billboards, television, pop-up computers, and cell phone ads. With the growth of video gaming and gambling activities in communities across America and online, how does it affect youth and young adults? Middle school, high school, and college students can be at risk of being negatively affected by gaming, gambling, and activities that include a mix of both in their daily lives. This webinar will discuss the prevalence and trends in youth gaming and gambling and the warning signs of problems with these activities. An overview of strategies to prevent youth problem gaming and gambling behavior and resources for help in Delaware, District of Columbia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia will be presented. LEARNING OBJECTIVES Recognize youth gaming and signs of gaming problems in youth/ young adults. Describe youth gambling and signs of gambling problems in youth/ young adults. Distinguish how youth/young adult gaming and gambling behaviors connect. Identify problem gaming and gambling prevention strategies implemented in West Virginia, Delaware, and Maryland. Identify resources for help with a gaming and/or gambling problem. PRESENTERS Heather Eshleman, MPH., is the Prevention Manager at the Maryland Center of Excellence on Problem Gambling.  She works collaboratively with community organizations, schools, and government agencies to prevent underage and problem gambling as well as oversee special population and youth grants.  She currently leads the Center’s efforts in compiling an underage and problem gambling prevention needs assessment to provide baseline data to guide future prevention strategies.  She served as the Alcohol and Substance Abuse Prevention Supervisor at the Anne Arundel County Department of Health from 2006-2019, overseeing the Substance Abuse Prevention coalitions, the Opioid Misuse Prevention Program, the Strengthening Families Program, the Fatal Overdose Review Team, and Coordination of the Students Against Destructive Decisions Chapters.  Before becoming Supervisor, from 2002-2006, Heather was a Grants Administrator at Anne Arundel County Department of Health.  Heather received her Masters in Public Health from the University at Albany School of Public Health and her Bachelor’s degree in School and Community Health Education from Towson University.  Heather served in the United States Peace Corps in Morocco, North Africa, as a Maternal and Child Health volunteer, working on hygiene promotion and pre-natal care for two years.   John Schmidt, BS, CPRS,  is currently the Prevention Services Coordinator for Youth for the Delaware Council on Gambling Problems, conducting presentations at middle and high schools throughout Delaware to inform students of disordered gambling and its connection to the gambling mechanics within video games and cell phones. John is clinically trained in the area of disordered gaming and also earned his certification in Studies in Gambling Addiction through the University of Minnesota Duluth. He also conducts research in partnership with the University of Delaware in the area of gambling and video gaming with Delaware middle and high school students via in-depth surveys.   Maricel Bernardo, MS, is the Program Coordinator for the  Problem Gambling Help Network of West Virginia (PGHNWV) at First Choice Services. She has worked in problem gambling since 2018 and has assisted many problem gamblers and their loved ones. She oversees PGHNWV’s prevention and outreach activities. Maricel works closely with the PGHNWV Prevention Grantees, Collegiate Recovery Network PRSS and other prevention groups to promote problem gambling education and awareness to the youth and community. She is a member of NCPG and serves on the  Prevention and Communication Committees as well as the NAADGS Prevention Workgroup.  Maricel has a Master of Science in Management-Healthcare Administration from Marshall University and a Bachelor of Arts in psychology from West Virginia University.

She leads a team that provides substance use prevention TA, and works tirelessly to reduce stigma, suicide, and improve mental health awareness. The Intersection of Prevention and Recovery: Making the Connection September 7, 2022   Webinar Overview and Objectives There is frequent discussion in the field of behavioral health of the existence and problems associated with the siloing of services and its negative impact. This webinar will explore the many connections between prevention and recovery. Participants will explore opportunities for collaboration and mutual support and benefit. By the end of this webinar, participants will be able to: List common terms used in prevention and recovery Describe the intersection between prevention and recovery approaches Identify specific ways in which prevention and recovery practitioners can better support one another   Presenter: Sandra Puerini Del Sesto, M.Ed, CPSS, is a consultant and master trainer in behavioral health and strategic planning for non-profits and has worked in prevention for over 40 years. In addition, she was the founding director of the Institute for Addiction Recovery at Rhode Island College. Sandra is a member of the advisory boards of the New England Prevention Technology Transfer Center (PTTC), the National Latino PTTC, the PTTC-NCO (National Coordinating Office) and the New England School of Addiction Studies. Sandra serves as the RI delegate to and the former Prevention Committee Co-Chair of the International Certification and Reciprocity Consortium (IC&RC), which certifies professionals working in behavioral health. The Collaboration Continuum: Connecting Across Fields to Prevent Suicide and Substance Misuse September 15, 2022   Learning Session Overview and Objectives We all know that collaboration and partnerships are the key to success in prevention efforts, including connections between closely related fields such as suicide and substance misuse prevention. This session will provide an overview of a framework for collaboration, the SPRC Collaboration Continuum, which provides tools and resources for prevention programs to strengthen connections and amplify the impact of their collective efforts. After hearing the story of how a regional coalition has engaged community partners in prevention efforts spanning both suicide and substance misuse prevention fields, participants will have the opportunity to examine their own partnership efforts and identify ways they can strengthen collaboration on the ground. By the end of this learning session, participants will be able to: Describe the SPRC Collaboration Continuum and its four levels of collaboration, as well as how to access related tools to strengthen their own collaboration. List new strategies to overcome common barriers to collaboration in their own prevention efforts. Develop a plan for at least one way they can strengthen their own suicide prevention efforts.   Presenter: Ellyson Stout, MS, State and Community Suicide Prevention Lead at EDC, specializes in public health and suicide prevention with diverse populations. In her role directing EDC’s Suicide Prevention Resource Center (SPRC) contract, she leads a team working to build suicide prevention capacity and infrastructure nationwide at the state, community, health system, and national levels. Stout has over 20 years of experience in public health, cross-sector collaboration, and health communications, including 15 years working with youth suicide prevention efforts in school, clinical, state and community settings. She has served on numerous expert panels and committees, including most recently the advisory group for the Surgeon General’s Call to Action to Implement the National Strategy for Suicide Prevention. Elly presents regularly on suicide prevention around the country, and has co-authored articles published in Journal of Primary Prevention and Journal of Rural Mental Health.
