  Webinar Description    Despite the prevalence of trauma, it often goes undetected particularly in people already dealing with life challenges and at high risk of substance use, misuse, and mental health problems. This training reviewed variations of trauma, and factors that can increase the likelihood of re-traumatization, and how the use of trauma informed care principles are preventive and support effective engagement and care. Discussion also explored de-escalation and self-regulation techniques, and the importance of provider self-care for person centered, trauma informed care.   The Presenter    Diana Padilla is a Research Project Manager at New York State Psychiatric Institute, Columbia University Medical Center. Webinar: Working to Promote Protection by Supporting LGBTQ+ Teens in Foster Care December 8, 2022   Webinar Description Youth in foster care face unique risk and protective factors related to substance misuse. LGTBQ+ youth in foster care need explicit support and acceptance; however, few caseworkers and caregivers receive specialized training. To address this, the Connecting: Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Expression (SOGIE) eLearning was developed. During this webinar, participants will learn about the importance of gender-affirming care for adolescence. Her work involves developing and evaluating programs and policies to improve the lives of children and families in the child welfare system. Susan is the principal investigator of Strive, a curriculum-based program designed to facilitate quality visits between parents and their children in foster care. She is a co-investigator of Connecting, a program for teens and their foster or relative caregivers aimed at preventing teens’ initiation of risky behaviors. Connecting has also developed a new module addressing the unique needs of LGBTQ2S teens in foster care. The module is available in the Alliance for Child Welfare Excellence training catalogue for caregivers. Throughout Susan’s career, she has focused on the social determinants of health and the elimination of inequities in health and wellness. She served on the Washington State Racial Disproportionality Advisory Committee until the committee ended in 2018. Susan earned a Ph.D. in epidemiology from Yale University and a B.A. in psychology and biology from Antioch College. She completed a National Institute of Mental Health-funded postdoctoral fellowship in Family Violence at The Children's Hospital in Boston, MA, where she also held a faculty appointment in pediatrics at Harvard Medical School. She holds affiliate faculty appointments within the University of Washington Schools of Public Health and Social Work. Kym Ahrens MD, MPH, University of Washington Department of Pediatrics. Dr. Ahrens is an Associate Professor of General Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine at Seattle Children's Hospital and the University of Washington School of Medicine. She also serves as Medical Director for the Washington State Department of Children, Youth, and Families Juvenile Rehabilitation System (DCYF JR. She conducts research to identify needs and improve outcomes for youth exposed to early adversity including systems-involved and gender-diverse youth.  Kevin P. Haggerty, M.S.W., Ph.D Dr. Haggerty is a professor emeritus at the University of Washington School of Social Work. He is the former director of the Social Development Research Group where he specialized in the delivery of prevention programs at the community, school and family level. For over three decades, he has focused on developing innovative ways to organize the scientific knowledge base for prevention so that parents, communities and schools can better identify, assess, and prioritize customized approaches that meet their needs. He has served as principal investigator on a variety of intervention-focused federally funded grants. An expert on substance abuse and delinquency prevention, Dr. Haggerty speaks, conducts trainings, and writes extensively on this field. He is a former board member and Fellow of the Society for Prevention Research and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Social Work and Social Welfare and is a prevention science reviewer for periodicals such as Prevention Science.   Questions? Dr. May has been, and is currently, the principal investigator of clinical and epidemiologic studies funded by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to research the characteristics of the continuum of FASD in the general populations of South Africa, United States, and Italy. He and his colleagues have focused on refining the diagnostic criteria for the FASD continuum, defining maternal risk and protective factors for FASD, and uncovering and quantifying the wide variation of outcomes and phenotypic traits of children who have been exposed to alcohol in the prenatal period. He presented data on studies of first grade children in the United States overall, South Africa, and focus on findings on FASD among children and their mothers in a county in the Southeastern region of the USA. FASD are prevalent today in the United States and are pernicious health disparities that no individual should have to endure.   Learning Objectives: Describe the common characteristics and traits of children with fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD).  Identify the maternal risk factors associated with FASD in the Southeastern USA and other regions and countries.  Describe the prevalence of FASD in four regions of the United States including the Southeast.  Understand the range of opportunities for prevention of, intervention upon, and mitigation of the most severe impacts of prenatal alcohol exposure on children.   About the Presenters:   Dr. Philip A. May is a Professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the Gillings School of Global Public Health where he works from the UNC Nutrition Institute as an epidemiologist. His research over the past 25 years has been primarily on fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD): prevalence, child characteristics, maternal risk factors, prevention and intervention. He served as a member of the groundbreaking Institute of Medicine Study Committee on Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (1994-1996). In 2018 he received one of the two highest awards from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) when he delivered the Mark Keller Honorary Lecture at NIH. Also, he has been honored with the Henry Rosett Research Award from the FASD Study Group of the Research Society on Alcoholism, an Excellence Award from the National Organization Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, and he has twice delivered the Geoffrey Robinson Memorial Keynote Presentation at the International Conference on FASD.   Dr. Julia Hasken is a postdoctoral research associate at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She has worked for the past 10 years to carry out epidemiological studies on fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD). She has co-authored over 25 publications focusing on the prevalence, child characteristics, and maternal risk factors of FASD in the United States and South Africa.

Stacee Read is Director of Network Development for the National Alliance for Drug Endangered Children. She is responsible for the development and oversight of State, Local, and Tribal DEC Alliances, and for providing training and TA within the DEC network - and to professionals across the nation. Her previous work in child welfare has included such roles as Crisis Counselor, and a Fatality Review Team Facilitator. Her depth of experience on committees and workgroups includes Substance Exposed Newborns, Rural Methamphetamine, and Child Protection.  Stacee received her Master’s in Social Work and her undergraduate studies in Psychology with an emphasis on abnormal psychology and dependency behaviors. This FREE 2-part virtual learning series is designed to enhance education and training related to the pre and post migration risk factors that contribute to substance use disorders (SUD) among Hispanic/Latino immigrant youth and provides screening, intervention, and referral to treatment tools to non-clinical professionals working with this population. The series addresses research data related to SUD in Hispanic/Latino immigrant youth, introduces basic alcohol, tobacco, and other drug abuse (ATODA) training, focuses on the early identification and prevention of behavioral, and emotional problems, as well as identifying signs and symptoms of co-occurring mental health issues. The series also provides information on assessing early signs and symptoms of SUD and highlights the importance of basic parenting/caregiver supervision and monitoring for those caring for unaccompanied immigrant youth. Lastly, the presenters will discuss developmental and SUD related issues, and introduces a culturally adapted approach to delivering Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) for Hispanic/Latino immigrant youth. Dr. Cervantes was a Research Psychologist at the UCLA Spanish Speaking Mental Health Research Center and held a full-time faculty appointment in the USC School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry, and the Behavioral Sciences. Dr. Cervantes is Co-Investigator on the Duke University, NIH Supported “Ser Hispano” study on acculturation stress and biomarkers. He was also the Principal Investigator for the NIH funded study, “Development of the Hispanic Stress Inventory-2” and PI on the recently completed the NIH drug prevention study “Familia Adelante: A multi risk Prevention Program for Hispanic Youth”. Dr. Cervantes is also a leader in evaluation science with special expertise in cultural competency and cross-cultural instrument development. He is the lead evaluator for the SAMHSA Hispanic and Latino Addiction and Prevention Technology Transfer Centers (TTCs). He has published extensively in peer review journals, books, and special reports. He is on the editorial board for the Hispanic Journal of Behavioral Sciences and sits on a number of national, local and university based advisory boards. Dr. Cervantes received his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Oklahoma State University.   Diana Padilla, CLC, CARC, CASAC-T Diana Padilla, RCR, CASAC-T, is Research Project Manager at the New York State Psychiatric Institute, Division of Substance Use Disorders, Columbia University Medical Center. Ms. Padilla provides intensive technical assistance in two organizational capacity-building initiatives; the implementation of SBIRT (Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment), and the integration of Equity and Inclusion strategies to improve service delivery and address behavioral health disparities for marginalized communities. Both projects are facilitated for the Northeast and Caribbean Technology Transfer Center (NeCATTC), HHS Region 2. Ms. Padilla also Chairs the National Committee on Behavioral Health Equity & Inclusion committee for the Addiction Technology Transfer Center. The working group focuses on disseminating the application of CLAS standards and other related topics and technical assistance initiatives to help organizations address disparities in behavioral health care. Ms. Padilla is also a Senior Trainer with more than 23 years of public health service, instructing behavioral health practitioners, prevention specialists and drug court professionals on addictions and recovery supporting best practices.

Learn about the six new research-based tools and resources created for the New England substance misuse prevention workforce to support their work in the Changing Landscape of Cannabis, with a focus on the IC & RC Prevention Domains. Resources include: A Practical guide to introduce and assist preventionists on how to leverage social media as an environmental change strategy for cannabis prevention and adoption of health-promoting norms in school and community settings   A thought piece that applies lessons learned from underage drinking and tobacco use prevention programs to the evolving landscape of cannabis use this paper takes a restorative approach and provide recommendations to communities based on the successes and shortcomings of these programs. A presentation/ToolKit municipalities can use to learn about the implications of allowing retail cannabis businesses to operate in their community the tool kit will cover a variety of data-driven considerations communities may want to review and discuss prior to making any decisions. A communication frame that will compassionately educate parents caregivers and youth on the potential harms of cannabis use on young brains while reducing stigma. A new and improved multipronged cannabis prevention education tool to be used in an alternative to suspension programs the tool could be a standalone product for other school districts and community coalitions to use as an alternative to suspension program. This 1-hour talk introduces the Invitation to Change (ITC), a model built to provide accessible and impactful practices to anyone in a helping role––be that a family member, peer support, or professional. Blending principles and practices found in three evidence-based approaches for supporting change, the ITC offers guidance on how to use them in a common language: not only to make helpers more effective but also to increase their capacity and willingness to support a person struggling with substance use.   About the Presenter: Dr. Nicole Kosanke is a licensed clinical psychologist with 20 years of experience, and works as the Director of Family Services at the Center for Motivation and Change in their outpatient division in NYC, where she specializes in the assessment and treatment of substance use disorders in individuals and families. She co-authored the award-winning book, Beyond Addiction: How Science and Kindness Help People Change, which is a compassionate and science-based family guide for navigating the addiction treatment world, understanding motivation, and using CRAFT skills. She also contributed to The 20 Minute Guide: A Guide for Parents about How to Help their Child Change their Substance Use. She has been interviewed on radio programs and podcasts about substance use disorders, and her writing on these topics has also been featured in Huffington Post, The Observer, and Counselor Magazine. Dr. Kosanke also does trainings (like these!) for the Center for Motivation and Change's Foundation for Change, helping families respond to their loved one's substance use with evidence-based knowledge and compassion. This tool serves prevention specialists that want to establish positive relationships with hispanic, latino, or latinx populations and those who are already working with this population and want to improve their cultural humility. The goal of this product is to help lessen the barriers that prevention specialists and latino populations may face when discussing substance misuse and addiction. Covered in this tool are geography of hispanic and latino populations within New England, linguistics to consider, risk and protective factors, and New England state specific resources for people who identify as hispanic, latino, or latinx with whom prevention specialists may want to connect. This tool was written in the fall of 2022, during a time of increasing cultural awareness and humility which, when incorporated into all aspects of life, will benefit everyone.   This resource is specific to the New England region which includes Maine, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Hampshire, and Vermont. This tool speaks to some specific cultural aspects of Hispanic, Latino, or Latinx people, discussed further in the Linguistic section.   From the Author: As someone who identifies as Puerto Rican, and who has a passion for advancing health equity for minority populations, I wanted to create this resource to further knowledge of the complexities of hispanic, latino, latina, and latinx people for the prevention workforce in New England. Growing up I watched family members struggling with substance misuse and addiction be negatively affected by a lack of understanding in care settings about the diversities between hispanic and latino subgroups. Her passion for creating a lasting impact led her to the public health field and for the past 14 years she has worked at Prevention Insights, a center within the School of Public Health at Indiana University, Bloomington.  Mallori works with people all over the world. She served on the Board of Directors for the Association for Applied and Therapeutic Humor and in 2021 became a TEDx speaker. Her credentials don’t impress her family, but occasionally her corny jokes do make them laugh.   Lodge McCammon Dr. Lodge McCammon is a therapeutic humorist, instructional designer, author, musician, and international education consultant who provides professional services, including keynote speeches, workshops, curriculum development, and a variety of training programs. He works with school districts, universities, nonprofits, and businesses (e.g., Palm Beach Schools, University of the West Indies, Discovery Education, Microsoft, Amazon, The Coca-Cola Company). Most recently, Lodge facilitated a month of therapeutic humor for the Nourished Teachers Community, which is a Facebook-funded initiative focused on helping educators cope with work stress and avoid burnout. He uses a program that he designed called “Laugh It Off!" to help his clients transform their daily frustrations into humor.

In addition, she was the founding director of the Institute for Addiction Recovery at Rhode Island College. Sandra is a member of the advisory boards of the New England Prevention Technology Transfer Center (PTTC), the National Latino PTTC, the PTTC-NCO (National Coordinating Office) and the New England School of Addiction Studies. Sandra serves as the RI delegate to and the former Prevention Committee Co-Chair of the International Certification and Reciprocity Consortium (IC&RC), which certifies professionals working in behavioral health. The Collaboration Continuum: Connecting Across Fields to Prevent Suicide and Substance Misuse September 15, 2022   Learning Session Overview and Objectives We all know that collaboration and partnerships are the key to success in prevention efforts, including connections between closely related fields such as suicide and substance misuse prevention. This session will provide an overview of a framework for collaboration, the SPRC Collaboration Continuum, which provides tools and resources for prevention programs to strengthen connections and amplify the impact of their collective efforts. After hearing the story of how a regional coalition has engaged community partners in prevention efforts spanning both suicide and substance misuse prevention fields, participants will have the opportunity to examine their own partnership efforts and identify ways they can strengthen collaboration on the ground. By the end of this learning session, participants will be able to: Describe the SPRC Collaboration Continuum and its four levels of collaboration, as well as how to access related tools to strengthen their own collaboration. List new strategies to overcome common barriers to collaboration in their own prevention efforts. Develop a plan for at least one way they can strengthen their own suicide prevention efforts.   Presenter: Ellyson Stout, MS, State and Community Suicide Prevention Lead at EDC, specializes in public health and suicide prevention with diverse populations. In her role directing EDC’s Suicide Prevention Resource Center (SPRC) contract, she leads a team working to build suicide prevention capacity and infrastructure nationwide at the state, community, health system, and national levels. Stout has over 20 years of experience in public health, cross-sector collaboration, and health communications, including 15 years working with youth suicide prevention efforts in school, clinical, state and community settings. She has served on numerous expert panels and committees, including most recently the advisory group for the Surgeon General’s Call to Action to Implement the National Strategy for Suicide Prevention. Elly presents regularly on suicide prevention around the country, and has co-authored articles published in Journal of Primary Prevention and Journal of Rural Mental Health. Culturally and linguistically appropriate strategies are the means to ensure respectful and responsive services that enhance effective outcomes for racial, ethnic, and other underserved communities in behavioral health care. As such, being culturally informed when conducting evidence based (EB) practices such as Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment, (SBIRT) can help Hispanic and Latinx clients reduce their substance use. SBIRT, is an evidence-based practice that helps practitioners identify and intervene with people whose pattern of substance use puts them at risk for or are experiencing substance-related health and other psychosocial problems. The question is: How do we facilitate SBIRT without compromising the fidelity of the model while practicing culturally responsive care? This two session webinar series will review current landscape of substance use and benefits of culturally adapted evidence-based interventions that align with culturally and appropriate services standards, (CLAS). Further, the content will inform on how a culturally informed framework can help meet the needs and enhance quality care among Hispanic communities at risk. Goal: Clinical and non-clinical professionals will review the dynamics of facilitating a culturally responsive SBIRT intervention for reducing substance use with Latinx communities and enhance their recovery and wellness process. Jerry Moe, whose widely emulated work helping young children in families facing addiction has been featured in award-winning projects by Sesame Street in Communities, Nickelodeon and PBS - and whose passion for kids and deep empathy have routinely moved audiences to tears. He recently retired after 43 years as a child counselor and industry icon who brought hope and healing to thousands around the globe. Jerry spent most of his career with the Betty Ford Center and the Hazelden Betty Ford Foundation, where he was executive director of national Children's Programs. Moe's empathy, emotional connection to kids, and unwavering hope for them, likely stems from his own experiences with a father who struggled with alcoholism, accessed help, and lived his last 38 years sober. Moe is also a cancer survivor, husband, and father of three children of his own. Recording: Girls and Women: Substance Misuse Trends and Prevention Strategies   Data now show that girls and young women, ages 12 to 20, are drinking more alcohol than their male counterparts. There are some key considerations that prevention specialists should know as they design strategies to curb harmful drinking behaviors among girls, such as the association between underage drinking and mental health conditions including depression and anxiety. For more than 14 years, Erin has worked in substance abuse prevention supporting communities to use evidence-based strategies and data-driven processes in substance abuse prevention planning and implementation.  She works with community level prevention practitioners and schools in the development, implementation, evaluation, and sustainability of prevention interventions.   Stephanie Asteriadis Pyle, PhD, CPS  Stephanie Asteriadis Pyle, PhD, CPS, Emeritus is a former Project Manager for the Center for the Application of Substance Abuse Technologies (CASAT).  Dr. Asteriadis Pyle established Nevada’s first substance use disorder library and clearinghouse at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) campus and during her tenure at UNR/CASAT served as the C0-I or PI for 36 grants and contracts for substance use prevention for students at UNR and Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC) and problem gambling prevention for aging populations in Nevada. Dr. Asteriadis Pyle most recently managed and wrote for the CASAT OnDemand website and blog for five years, synthesizing research for professionals in SUD prevention, treatment, and recovery and related behavioral health fields. She continues to teach CAS 255, an introductory course in substance misuse prevention she has taught face to face or online since 2007

Webinar Description  Research suggests that race and ethnicity are predictors of how services are delivered, and implicit bias is one component that has been identified as influencing the provision of poor care. The elusiveness of unconscious bias underscores provider perception, unwitting use of stigmatic language, and influences assumptions and micro aggressions affecting a person's capacity to respond to care. This interactive 2-hour training discussed how cognitive bias develops, is sustained by intrinsic and environmental factors, and contributes to inequitable outcomes for persons of color. The content also informed on bias-reducing techniques and person-first language approaches that can enhance provider-client interactions and outcomes for marginalized communities.
