With increased stress among colleagues, impacted work plans, and the need to move communication onto virtual platforms, the learning curve is nonstop.   In this 1.5-hour training “Virtual Facilitation for Caring, Connected, Interactive Remote Meetings,” we will discuss and demonstrate tools we’ve learned for building virtual meeting space that cultivates connection and grounded intention.    NOTE: This training is designed for those already with a basic understanding of the Zoom platform who want to make their meetings more dynamic, interactive, and supportive. If you are entirely new to participating in meetings online, this training might not be for you.   Desired Outcomes: A shared understanding of basic functions of the Zoom platform. L.A.T. (Northern Arapaho) is an enrolled member of the Northern Arapaho Nation and affiliated with the Eastern Shoshone Tribe of Wyoming. She earned a doctorate in counselor education and supervision at the University of Wyoming, and is also a Licensed Professional Counselor, and Licensed Addictions Therapist. For nineteen years she has been a mental health provider in the treatment of Native American youth and families. She is also an advocate of education in Indian Country, a resource provider for promoting cultural enhancement of evidence-based practices and practice-based evidence of treatment approaches for Native American children and their families exposed to trauma. Avis Garcia has more than nineteen years of experience and is knowledgeable about the concerns of implementation and adaptation of evidenced-based practices being introduced into Indian country. Avis is currently employed as an executive director of a nonprofit substance abuse treatment center in Cheyenne, Wyoming.

Enhanced Prevention Learning Series (EPLS):  Prevention Ethics Overview This 2-week distance learning series offers a unique interactive experience that provides participants an opportunity to explore the six principles of the Prevention Code of Ethics using realistic examples designed to strengthen participants’ abilities to manage challenging situations in their work. Ms. Gutierrez has been part of various training teams to include the U.S.-Mexico Border states and sister cities in Mexico with delivery of the Strategic Prevention Framework in Spanish. Additionally, Ms. Gutierrez has been part of SAMSHA’s regional training teams and called upon to provide training to various Latino and Native American populations to cater to cultural needs. Join Scott Gagnon, Director of the New England PTTC as he interviews Dr. Amelia Arria during this one-hour special. This engaging hour-long discussion will focus on strategies for alcohol prevention and early intervention among adolescents and young adults, including cannabis use and the signs of cannabis dependence, its impacts on academic focus and engagement, and associations with mental health issues. Dr. Arria will also address questions related to COVID-19 and the potential impacts that social and physical distancing might have on college age youth drinking and drug use.   Dr. Arria will respond to questions that participants submitted during the registration process for this event.   Amelia M. Arria, Ph.D. is the Director of the Center on Young Adult Health and Development at the University of Maryland School of Public Health and a Professor in the Department of Behavioral and Community Health. She is also the Director of the University of Maryland School of Public Health Office of Planning and Evaluation. She received a B.S. in Human Development from Cornell University, a Ph.D. in Epidemiology from the University of Pittsburgh School of Public Health, and completed postdoctoral training at the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg School of Public Health. Her research is primarily focused on mental health and substance use among adolescents, young adults, and in particular college students. She has also completed studies related to mental health service utilization, predictors of suicidal behavior, prenatal substance use, and evaluations of addiction treatment. She is the Principal Investigator of the College Life Study, a large prospective study of more than 1200 individuals who were originally assessed as first-year college students and followed up into adulthood. That study has made significant contributions the scientific literature regarding the mental health needs of young adults and the risk factors and consequences of substance use among college students. Join us for strategies for mainaining health and balance, and please feel free to suggest specific topics for the fourth session. Avis Garcia, PhD, L.P.C. L.A.T. (Northern Arapaho) is an enrolled member of the Northern Arapaho Nation and affiliated with the Eastern Shoshone Tribe of Wyoming. She earned a doctorate in counselor education and supervision at the University of Wyoming, and is also a Licensed Professional Counselor, and Licensed Addictions Therapist. For nineteen years she has been a mental health provider in the treatment of Native American youth and families. She is also an advocate of education in Indian Country, a resource provider for promoting cultural enhancement of evidence-based practices and practice-based evidence of treatment approaches for Native American children and their families exposed to trauma. Avis Garcia has more than nineteen years of experience and is knowledgeable about the concerns of implementation and adaptation of evidenced-based practices being introduced into Indian country. Avis is currently employed as an executive director of a nonprofit substance abuse treatment center in Cheyenne, Wyoming.

Third Wednesday each month, beginning February 19, 2020.  10:00-10:45am CST The Great Lakes MHTTC and PTTC will host a series of interactive calls via Zoom for people who want to enhance their MI skills. This learning opportunity provides practitioners with a no-cost, easy to access opportunity to continue to build their practice skills towards fidelity. Saunders, MSSW, is the Wisconsin State Project Manager for the Great Lakes Addiction, Mental Health and Prevention Technology Transfer Centers. Her position is housed at the UW–Madison, where she’s worked since 1988. Since 2001, Laura has provided SBIRT and Motivational Interviewing training to physicians, nurses, medical students, psychologists, specialty addiction treatment providers, social workers, physical therapists, health educators, and staff who work in correctional settings. She has provided feedback and coaching to hundreds of social workers, correctional staff,  and other human service providers who are interested in using evidence-based practices with fidelity. Laura joined the international group of Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT) in 2006 (Sophia, Bulgaria) and is an active member of the Wisconsin MINT group. Enhanced Prevention Learning Series (EPLS): Prevention Ethics Overview This distance learning series offers a unique interactive experience that explores the six principles of the Prevention Code of Ethics using realistic examples designed to strengthen participants’ abilities to manage challenging situations in their work. The learning series is structured to also provide online consultation, skill-based learning and practice, group and individual activities, reading assignments, and discussion on topics essential to application of an ethical decision-making process.   During this EPLS participants will:      1. Define Ethics and related terms.      2. Describe the six principles in the Prevention Code of Ethics.      3. Ms. Gutierrez has been part of various training teams to include the U.S.-Mexico Border states and sister cities in Mexico with delivery of the Strategic Prevention Framework in Spanish. Additionally, Ms. Gutierrez has been part of SAMSHA’s regional training teams and called upon to provide training to various Latino and Native American populations to cater to cultural needs.
