Syndemic Solutions Josh Esrick, MPP, Emily Patton, MSc, PgDip, and Olivia Stuart, LMSW January 18, 2024, 1:00pm-2:30pm EST COURSE DESCRIPTION The term “syndemics” describes the relationship between two or more epidemics which often cluster together (e.g., substance misuse and HIV) and have shared social and environmental drivers. When these epidemics interact, they mutually exacerbate the negative effects of each condition, thereby worsening health outcomes. The syndemics framework recognizes the importance of addressing these interactions and seeks to implement a whole-person, integrated model of prevention and care in collaboration with other health care providers. These services focus on equity by putting people first and providing the services that people express interest in receiving. It also seeks to address shared population-level risk and protective factors that influence the co-occurring epidemics that can lead to health inequities. While the concepts of co-occurring epidemics and social determinants driving health outcomes are not new to the field of prevention, syndemics is an emerging framework that many prevention practitioners may be unfamiliar with. This 90-minute webinar will provide participants with an overview of the syndemics framework and its growing use in the field of prevention. It will explain the relationship between the syndemics framework and a public health approach to prevention, the importance of leveraging policy as a public health tool to address syndemic risk factors, and how to build collaborative partnerships between prevention professionals and other health-focused entities to better address syndemics. It will also review the importance of the social determinants of health to syndemics and recommend strategies to support the prevention workforce in improving health outcomes. Mr. Esrick has over ten years of experience researching, writing, evaluating, and presenting on substance use prevention and other behavioral health topics. He is an expert in providing training and technical assistance (T/TA) in substance use, having overseen the development of hundreds of T/TA products for numerous clients, including six of SAMHSA’s ten regional Prevention Technology Transfer Centers (PTTCs), the PTTC Network Coordinating Office, the Central East Addiction Technology Transfer Center (ATTC) and Mental Health Technology Transfer Centers (MHTTC), and SAMHSA’s Center for the Application of Prevention Technologies (CAPT). These trainings and products have covered a wide range of topics, including strategic planning, data collection and analysis, and identifying evidence-based prevention interventions for youth. In addition to T/TA, Mr. Esrick has directly provided many of these services to behavioral health agencies and other entities. He has published several academic journal articles. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the State University of New York at Buffalo and a Master of Public Policy from George Washington University.   Emily Patton, MSc, PgDip holds a Masters of Science in Abnormal and Clinical Psychology from Swansea University and a Postgraduate Degree in Criminology and Criminal Justice from the University of Edinburgh. She offers significant professional experience in the fields of public policy development and analysis, criminal justice research, data collection and analysis, program development, and performance management.     Olivia Stuart, MSW  supports the training & technical assistance (T/TA) team in the development and delivery of knowledge translation products across multiple projects. In this capacity, she assists with webinars, literature reviews, and infographics on a range of behavioral health topics. Prior to joining Carnevale Associates, Olivia interned with the Urban Institute’s Justice Policy Center where she supported projects to reduce inequities in the criminal justice system. Olivia also served as a Graduate Research Supervisor at George Mason University and worked for several years in LGBTQ+ advocacy and fundraising. She holds a Master of Social Work degree from George Mason University.

The Ongoing Opioid Epidemic (August 2023) Part 1: The Current Landscape of Opioid Use and Consequences Josh Esrick, MPP, and Emily Patton, MSc, PgDip August 8, 2023, 1:00pm-2:30pm EST COURSE DESCRIPTION This webinar will provide a broad overview of current opioid use and related trends in SAMHSA Region 3 and nationwide. It will review changes in use and consequences, and ongoing shifts in substance preferences— particularly the expanded use of fentanyl. Data on xylazine use are limited, but available information will also be shared. The webinar will also discuss the increasing frequency of polysubstance use involving opioids. It will review the different types of substances used—intentionally or unintentionally— with opioids, including xylazine, stimulants, and cannabis, and the extent to which this use occurs. Lastly, the webinar will review the latest research on the social determinants of health and other risk and protective factors impacting the opioid epidemic. Princess is proficient in qualitative and quantitative research and analysis, program/project management, and public health issues. Recognized for orchestrating work processes and instilling trust and confidence in stakeholders in education, private entities, government organizations, and participants that support public health objectives—currently advancing her degree as an MPH candidate with a concentration in Epidemiology. She hopes to advance community-level monitoring and evidence-based interventions and training to improve health outcomes produced by Substance used disorder and other communicable diseases.

Dr. Triana-Tremain plays a crucial role in providing high-impact T/TA services to the prevention workforce, emerging prevention professionals, organizations, and community prevention stakeholders.   Dr. Triana-Tremain provides T/TA on data-driven public health interventions and effectively communicating data to stakeholders in order to improve understanding in various populations. She has worked across the public and private sectors for over 50 organizations to develop quality improvement plans in the areas of workforce development, public health improvement, and community impact. She also has extensive project management experience, particularly in developing logic models that focus stakeholders on intentional project outcomes.  A certified Lean Six Sigma Green and Yellow Belt, Dr. Triana-Tremain received her doctorate from Texas Woman’s University in community health, with a public health concentration. She also has a master’s from Texas Woman’s University and a bachelor’s from Texas A&M University-Commerce.

RECORDING: Effecting Change through Alcohol Control Policies   Dr. Toomey will discuss the importance of addressing alcohol-related problems using a population-level approach. She will provide an overview of how alcohol control policies can be effective in reducing a range of alcohol-related problems as well as describe key alcohol control policies that could be enacted at a local or state level. Much of her research has addressed underage alcohol use and over service of alcohol. She has a PhD in epidemiology from the University of Minnesota.

Nicole is dedicated to building the capacity of the behavioral health workforce to reduce stigma associated with substance use and mental health issues and make data-informed decisions to improve prevention programs. Prior to joining the PTTC Network, Nicole provided training and technical assistance for SAMSHA's CAPT as a state/tribal liaison and was the Service to Science Lead for the Southwest Resource Team. For over 10 years, Nicole managed the evaluation and quality improvement services to community-based organizations, clinics, and prisons across Oklahoma working to prevent HIV and care for those living with the disease. Nicole has a master's in experimental psychology and is a Certified Prevention Specialist (CPS) through the International Credentialing and Reciprocity Consortium.    Dr. Beverly Triana-Tremain has nearly 35 years of public health teaching, research, and consulting experience. Her background and skillset blend theoretical and practical approaches in evaluation, research, and quality improvement processes. She is a fellow in the National Public Health Leadership Institute and in 2006 established Public Health Consulting, LLC, to assist agencies in improving the public health system. She serves as a technical consultant to various local, state, and national private and public organizations in evaluation, research, and quality improvement. She has been the evaluator or quality improvement consultant on grants received from RWJF, CDC, SAMSHA, HRSA for nonprofit, state, and local health departments. She is an epidemiologist with the Southwest Prevention Center at the University of Oklahoma. In this role, she serves Region 6 as Epidemiologist for the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration (SAMHSA) Prevention Training and Technology Transfer Center (PTTC). There she assists states with increasing the use of data in decision making. Her passion is helping organizations slow down and understand the processes that promote authentic and quality strategies to improve the public’s health.

Have you been working with a prevention grant that requires you to conduct a needs assessment or an evaluation? If you are relatively new to prevention or new to using data, this series is for you! In this five-part series, Dr. Hayden Center will take you on a data journey, from providing an overview of the basic components of data literacy to then taking a deeper dive in parts two through four to learn more about data collection, data analysis and interpretation, and finally visualizing and communicating data to your partners. During this journey, there will be discussion and practical tips from Dr. Center; who has worked with local community prevention organizations to build capacity around working with data.       PRESENTER Dr. Hayden D. Center, Jr. was most recently on faculty at Auburn University at Montgomery in the Department of Psychology, where he taught for ten years. He has taught at several universities over the past thirty years.  He has also been a licensed professional counselor (LPC) specializing in addiction issues for over 30 years. Dr. Center has worked as a consultant in alcohol, tobacco, and other drug abuse prevention since 1987.  He has worked in the field of prevention for more than 30 years. He served as the director of a US Department of Education (USDOE) grant while at Auburn University.  He served the State of Alabama Department of Education as the coordinator of the state Safe and Drug-Free Schools Program. He was a consultant to the Alabama Governor’s Office of Drug Abuse Policy for ten years and has worked with numerous state and local agencies in the state of Alabama. He served as the evaluator for the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention’s (CSAP) Southeast Center for the Application of Prevention Technologies (SECAPT) and the Border Center for the Application of Prevention Technologies (BCAPT). He has provided over 300 trainings and workshops on the topics of “science-based prevention,” “evaluation,” “risk and protective factors”, and “sustainability.”  He has worked with numerous agencies and organizations at the national, state, and local levels as an evaluator, including three Drug-Free Community grants.  His experience includes working with several projects to develop data bases, collect and interpret data, and produce data dissemination products and materials. Most recently Dr. Center has conducted training on implementation science, the psychopharmacology of marijuana, opioid use disorder, the opioid epidemic, and prevention of opioid overdose death.  He is also working on the development of a sustainability toolkit that was released in the Fall of 2019.  He and three colleagues presented an overview of the toolkit at the National Prevention Network (NPN) Conference in Chicago in 2019.

    Part 2: Conducting Online Surveys: Strengthening your Survey Data Collection during COVID-19   Webinar Date: June 16, 2021 Part 2 of this 3-part webinar series is on collecting needs assessment data online! Part 2 will focus specifically on improving survey data collection online. This webinar will weigh key considerations for when collecting survey data online rather than in-person might be preferred and provide important tips for collecting online survey data. By the end of the webinar, participants will be able to: Describe how primary data collection fits within the Strategic Prevention Framework. Identify advantages and disadvantages of conducting online surveys. She has extensive experience in needs assessment and evaluation design, questionnaire development, data collection and analysis, and specializes in qualitative methods. Dr. Hagen is also well-versed in the Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF) and has provided SPF-related training and technical assistance to SAMHSA grantees at national, state/jurisdiction/tribal, and local levels           Dr. Sandeep Kasat, MBBS, MPH, is a senior epidemiologist at Westat with over 15 years of experience in behavioral health epidemiology, especially as it relates to substance abuse, and using epidemiological data in strategic planning, and decision-making. He leads data analysis and dissemination activities on several projects at Westat.   The Great Lakes PTTC offers this training for prevention practitioners in HHS Region 5: IL, IN, MI, MN, OH, and WI This is the first in a series of two webinars exploring the impact of trauma and adverse childhood experiences on the prevention of substance misuse and substance use disorders.  Prevention professionals will consider how to apply this understanding to prevention efforts from assessment to the implementation of prevention interventions.   Learning Objectives Define trauma at the individual and community level. Describe trauma’s lasting impact on cognition and emotional regulation. Learn the elements of trauma informed practice. Identify three ways to integrate a trauma informed approach into prevention efforts.   Speaker Dodi Swope is licensed as a Marriage and Family Therapist in the state of Massachusetts. Self-Paced Online Courses: Demystifying Data: Gathering and Using Local Risk and Protective Factor Data for Prevention Part 1: Gathering Local Risk and Protective Factor Data for Prevention Part 1 of this two-part online course series will describe the importance of gathering data for community needs assessments and evaluation, including the types of data to collect. Participants will review key risk and protective factors associated with substance use and mental health. The course explores existing data sources, assessment of data gaps, and options for collecting primary data at the local level.  By the end of the course, participants will: Learn about key risk and protective factors to assess at the individual, family, peer, school, and community levels; Identify sources of existing data on risk and protective factors; and Assess strategies for developing a data collection plan to address data gaps at the local level.   Part 2: Using Local Risk and Protective Factor Data for Prevention During Part 2 of this online course series, participants will learn about data quality and quantity—having enough data and having the right data. The course explores processes for prioritizing risk and protective factors to determine which to address with prevention efforts and shares examples. This course will conclude with recommendations for ongoing monitoring to inform evaluation efforts. Most states and territories, as well as many communities andtribes, use SAMHSA’s Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF) to guide theirprevention work. The SPF is a cyclical, collaborative, data-driven strategicplanning and implementation process that increases the likelihood of achievingthe intended substance-related outcomes (for example, to reduce underagedrinking or to reduce opioid overdoses). The first step of the SPF isAssessment, which begins with collecting and prioritizing substance-relatedconsumption patterns and consequences data. Data prioritization in SPF Step 1is essential in identifying the most important substance-related problem(s)that a state, territory, tribe, or community is facing.  This handout provides an overview of one basicmethod for prioritizing needs assessment data, using the method described in Episode1 of the PTTC's podcast, the Data Dive.

Overview Many states maintain data on substance misuse and suicide-related problems, including death rates. Mapping is used frequently to communicate this data to stakeholders. However, individual states do not always have access to the data from neighboring states, or the data is not easily comparable across state lines. In HHS Region 7, important population centers and transportation routes exist at and across state borders. Therefore, it makes sense to map and share data that is easily comparable across state boundaries. In this example, data on deaths related to ATOD use is combined with data on deaths by suicide to provide a more complete picture of behavioral health-related mortality in the across the region. Hopefully, this model of data sharing can facilitate cross-state and region-wide planning and collaboration to address behavioral health problems.
