My guests for this episode are Dr. Evelyn Higgins and Jacqueline Hall from Wired for Addiction.  Dr. Higgins, an international expert in the epidemiology of addiction, works to inspire communities to talk openly about mental health and addiction from a solutions-oriented perspective. Ms. Hall is the COO of Wired for Addiction She works as the liaison to ensure that criminal justice, state and federal government; along with the medical community and others have access to the pioneering services they provide. Building Great Rapport: How to Engage Patients with Unhealthy Substance Use Jim Winkle, MPH August 17, 2021, 1-3 PM EST COURSE DESCRIPTION By adopting a new approach, clinicians can greatly improve how they engage with these patients. This presentation will improve providers' ability to engage and build rapport by challenging assumptions that lead to stigma, applying principles of harm reduction, and performing a four-step brief intervention model that enhances the motivation of patients to decrease their risk of illness and death. As a result, clinicians who once considered these patient visits "difficult" can begin to perceive them as valuable opportunities to help patients adopt safer behaviors and forge their pathway to recovery. LEARNING OBJECTIVES Describe the role of stigma towards patients with unhealthy substance use List the basic principles of a Harm Reduction approach to patient care Perform a four-step brief intervention in less than five minutes Use telehealth platform functions to effectively engage patients PRESENTERS Jim Winkle, MPH has trained hundreds of providers and clinical team members how to address substance use with primary care and emergency medicine patients. As the creator of the SBIRT Oregon website, Jim has designed screening forms, clinic tools and training videos used by health professionals across the country. Jim currently works as a consultant, delivering training and technical assistance to medical systems, universities, and professional organizations.

  The Great Lakes PTTC offers this training for prevention providers in HHS Region 5: IL, IN, MI, MN,OH, and WI.  This training is offered in response to a need identified by Region 5 stakeholders. This webinar will present a panel of prevention providers from across the Great Lakes Region who have been working in school-based settings throughout COVID-19. They will share their success and challenges throughout the initial crisis and as they have worked through the 2020–2021 school year. Participants will have an opportunity to ask questions of about how the presenters navigated the challenges and ever-changing landscape of school-based prevention this year, while looking forward to the school year ahead.   Learning Objectives: Learn how prevention providers navigated the changes brought on by school closures. Workforce Vicarious Trauma: Management Guidelines Kate Bishop, MSSA January 13, 2021, 1-2 PM EST COURSE DESCRIPTION The novel coronavirus pandemic has brought incredibly challenging working conditions to many in health and human services fields. Many workers are logging on remotely and struggling with simultaneous demands like homeschooling children or caring for a sick family member, while others may be grieving unfathomable losses or managing a personal mental health crisis while trying to carry on for the sake of the vulnerable populations they serve. Studies have diagrammed a predictable cascade of trauma-worker mental health difficulties, starting with burnout, progressing through compassion fatigue, and tumbling into a vicarious trauma condition. Vicarious trauma can leave helpers feeling helpless, struggling with the cumulative weight of the stories they’ve heard and seen. Some may develop trauma responses like hypervigilance, nightmares, clinical anxiety and depression that impact their personal functioning, work performance, and job retention. This webinar will introduce what we know about how vicarious trauma impacts individuals, examine how the current crisis exacerbates these conditions, and offer supportive attitudes, interventions, and policies for managers and supervisors to implement. LEARNING OBJECTIVES Describe the impact of witnessing and assisting trauma survivors on health and human service workers. Examine the effects of COVID-19 and lockdown measures on workers who staff the social safety net. Develop a toolbox of supervisory attitudes, skills, and interventions designed to support front line workers who are dealing with vicarious trauma. Explore best practices, policy guidance, and implementation considerations in becoming a trauma-informed workplace. PRESENTERS Kate Bishop, MSSA, the Education Coordinator at the LGBT Health Resource Center of Chase Brexton, is a seasoned professional development trainer with expertise in working with LGBTQ populations, sexual and reproductive health care, adolescent development, intimate partner violence, and sexual trauma. She is certified as a trainer through GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network) as well as SAGE (Services and Advocacy for GLBT Elders). Before joining the Chase Brexton team, she developed the capacity building program at the University of Maryland School of Medicine’s STAR TRACK Adolescent HIV program, providing cultural responsiveness trainings for agencies that serve sexual minority youth of color. Ms. Bishop holds a Bachelor of Arts in Gender Studies from Hiram College and a Masters in Social Work from Case Western Reserve University.

As sheltering in place becomes the new normal in many areas of the US, millions are experiencing isolation, financial insecurity, and unprecedented levels of stress—at a time when physical distancing separates people from the support systems they need most.   And as we move into the planning for our response, let’s remember that prevention practitioners have a proven track record of success in coordinating local public health responses to health emergencies. National emergency epidemiologic data demonstrate that state and local prevention efforts work: the overall prevalence of drinking among 12- to 20-year olds has declined by 32.9 percent since 2004, due in part to effective prevention initiatives.

In 2018, one in five high school students and one in 20 middle school students reported that they had “vaped” in the past 30 days, a substantial increase from the previous year. In this webinar, we outline exactly what E-cigarettes are, explore the youth vaping epidemic, and introduce CATCH My Breath as one possible solution. CATCH My Breath is a youth E-cigarette and Juul prevention program developed by the University of Texas Health Science Center. The program provides up-to-date information to teachers, parents, and health professionals to equip students with the knowledge and skills they need to make informed decisions about the use of E-cigarettes, including JUUL devices. CATCH My Breath uses a peer-led teaching approach and meets national and state health education standards. And best of all, it’s FREE!! Presented on December 5, 2019.
