Primary prevention is a key strategy for eliminating inequities in substance misuse prevention. These resources and tools can help to improve the quality of services provided by the substance misuse prevention workforce in order to reduce health disparities and achieve health equity so that all individuals receiving prevention services feel acknowledged and respected.
The Southeast PTTC 2024 Health Equity Series - Innovative Strategies for Substance Use Prevention & Behavioral Health Equity
According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Behavioral health equity is a right! A right to access high-quality and affordable health care services and supports for all populations, including Black, Latino, and Indigenous and Native American persons, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders and other persons of color; members of religious minorities; lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) persons; persons with disabilities; persons who live in rural areas; and persons otherwise adversely affected by persistent poverty or inequality. This series will offer important tools and advance ideas relevant to the varied needs, perspectives, and communities in Region 4.

Equity, diversity, and inclusion are important considerations in prevention practice. Over the course of the Health Equity Series, we will discuss action steps, both personally and professionally, to bring the conversation of equity to life.

Watch the recording of the virtual Southeast Regional Summit on Prevention and Equity to hear from peers, prevention & public health professionals, researchers, and government officials. This summit was developed in response to a need identified in Region 4 to provide professionals in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee the opportunity to examine the implications and challenges of advancing both equity and substance misuse prevention and share best practices and lessons learned. The summit featured panelists and presenters with expertise in Appalachian and rural communities, Native American, LGBTQ and African American communities.
As inequities continue to permeate our society, it’s important for prevention leaders to build their organization’s capacity to advance health equity. This session will explore the institutionalized, personally-mediated and structural mechanisms, which cause or perpetuate differences in opportunities, stresses and exposures as well as prevention service access and quality. Participants will identify practical strategies to act individually and collectively to address challenges and systemic barriers that impact the communities we serve.
As health disparities continue to persist throughout our community, the prevention field has an important role in the advancement of health equity. The session will help leaders identify practical strategies to act individually and collectively to address significant challenges and barriers for the achievement of optimal health and wellness.
