The New England Prevention Technology Transfer Center, administered by AdCare Educational Institute of Maine, Inc., provides training and technical assistance services to the professional and volunteer prevention workforce within the New England states. The New England PTTC is developing a diverse program with multiple modes of training and information dissemination. This includes collaboration with states to hold live, in person trainings featuring the latest prevention science, but also multiple opportunities for distance learning to maximize the reach of technical assistance in the region. The New England PTTC also puts a focus on workforce development initiatives, to include introducing New England high school students and young adults to the many educational and career opportunities within the prevention field.

The New England PTTC will serve as a hub of specialty expertise in providing training and technical assistance in the area of cannabis risk education and prevention.

The New England Prevention Technology Transfer Center program is funded by SAMHSA of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Date: March 19, 2024 Format: Webinar   Time: 12:00 PM—1:00 PM EST Cost: FREE   ABOUT THE LEARNING SESSION   Over the recent years, gambling has changed quite a bit in the New England states. If someone wants to gamble, all they need to do is simply take their phone out of their pocket. Although changes such as ease of access create new opportunities, they also create new risks for potential harm. This interactive workshop will provide participants with an overall understanding of the current gambling landscape and the impact experienced so far with expansions. We will review emerging trends and available data, share gambling-specific prevention strategies, and highlight ways to put ‘Prevention in Action’ when it comes to problem gambling.   LEARNING OBJECTIVES Understand the landscape of gambling in the New England states and the impact of the new legalization expansions (online/sports betting). Discuss risk and protective factors including warning signs for problem gambling. Review emerging trends and current national, state, regional and local data that is available. Identify gambling-specific gambling prevention strategies and resources that can be utilized on the state, regional, and local level.   PRESENTERS Kelly Leppard, MPA, and Kaitlin Brown, LPC, LADC, ICGC II is the Primary Prevention Services Coordinator for the Connecticut Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services, Problem Gambling Services Division. Kelly is a Certified Prevention Specialist and has been working in the prevention field on the local and state level since 2008. Prior to her current position, Kelly worked for the Town of Southington and is a Past–President of the Connecticut Association of Prevention Professionals Kaitlin Brown is a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Drug and Alcohol Counselor (LADC), Internationally Certified Gambling Counselor (ICGC II), holds an International Gaming Disorder Certificate (IGDC) and is a Board Approved Clinical Consultant (BACC) with the International Gambling Counselor Certification Board providing supervision to those seeking to obtain certification in working with Gambling & Gaming Disorders. Kaitlin is currently the Director of Programs & Services for the Connecticut Council on Problem Gambling, Kaitlin oversees the statewide problem gambling helpline, education, prevention initiatives, and responsible gambling efforts.   In addition, Lori Manson, Maine Problem Gambling Services Coordinator, will provide a few brief comments about recent changes in Maine with the opening of sports betting this fall.   About the webinar: This webinar is planned and hosted by the New England Prevention Technology Transfer Center, a program funded through a cooperative agreement from SAMHSA, in response to an identified need to provide education to the New England prevention workforce about gambling prevention. Participants will receive a certificate of participation for 1 contact hour. This training is pre-approved by the Maine Prevention Certification Board, an IC&RC member board. This webinar will be recorded. Certificates are only available to those who participate in the live event.   MARCH IS....  Problem Gambling Awareness Month (PGAM) Problem Gambling Awareness Month is a nationwide grassroots campaign, held annually in March, that seeks to increase public awareness of problem gambling and promote prevention, treatment, and recovery services. Join us in the Spring! LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM Cohort 10 begins April 29, 2024 APPLY NOW The application deadline is March 15, 2024   Welcome to the Leadership Development Program (LDP). The LDP focuses on key leadership skills using a range of learning methods designed to increase your effectiveness immediately. This program includes the use of an intact, highly diverse learning community that includes participants from across the prevention, intervention, and recovery support service continuum. Developing effective leaders is particularly important as the profession faces multiple challenges, such as the overdose crisis, a changing behavioral healthcare landscape, and impending leadership transitions. Learn more about the program on the Admissions page!    The Leadership Development Program Team is dedicated to your health and safety. Currently, the LDP Cohort 10 is scheduled as a hybrid model program with face-to-face and virtual meetings. All face-to-face sessions are set to take place in Concord, NH. Our team is constantly evaluating public health policies and guidance from the CDC, the New England region, and our internal organizations. In the event we are no longer able to conduct face-to-face meetings due to safety concerns, at any point before or during the program, we will conduct all meetings in a virtual format and tuition costs will be reevaluated accordingly.   About the webinar: This webinar is co-sponsored through the New England Prevention Technology Transfer Center, a program funded through SAMHSA.   Prevention Success Video Series   This video series highlights several initiatives from across New England following evidence-informed prevention practices to develop effective prevention programs. Through interviews, you will see examples of how these prevention practitioners use prevention science to identify and address a need in their communities, and the power of prevention science to create change.    How can you use this resource? This resource is intended to provide real examples of how prevention initiatives are planned and implemented and the impact that effective prevention programs can have. For people who are new to the prevention field, either as staff, volunteers, coalition members, or other community members, these videos can be a tool to demonstrate what prevention is and can do. For those who have been in the prevention field, these videos provide examples to expand the possibilities for how prevention science can be used in different settings to address different types of challenges. Youth and young adults represent a growing population affected by problem gambling, and this program seeks to empower colleges to address problem gambling along with substance use and mental health. For more information: https://ccpg.org/     INCREDIBLE YEARS Interview with Tamar Dalcé Coles, M.Ed., Incredible Years Grant Coordinator 2021-2023, Rhode Island Regional Coalitions The Incredible Years Series is an evidence-based curriculum to address social-emotional learning for parents, teachers, and children. They are designed to work jointly to promote emotional, social, and academic competence and to prevent, reduce, and treat behavioral and emotional problems in young children. This program has been used as an upstream prevention strategy in two Rhode Island communities, to support parents and teachers of young children and promote healthy development. For more information: https://riprevention.org/upstreamprevention/      LGBTQ+ YOUTH TOBACCO PREVENTION INITIATIVE Interview with Joanne Joy, Senior Program Manager, and April Hughes, Associate Program Manager, Healthy Communities of the Capital Area.  Recognizing a need for more data and information on tobacco use and prevention among LGBTQ+ youth, community partners conducted a needs assessment to learn more about this issue. Using what was learned, HCCA and community partners developed new initiatives to support LGBTQ+ youth and promote prevention which continue to grow and evolve with the needs of the community.
