Recording link: Nexus of Substance Misuse Prevention and Problem Gambling Prevention   The focus of this webinar is on the nexus between substance misuse prevention and problem gambling prevention. Gambling disorders are highly comorbid with other mental health and substance use disorders. The prevalence of co-occurring gambling addiction and substance abuse is high. Approximately 1 in 10 compulsive gamblers report being concerned about their substance use.   LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Discuss the complex relationship between problem gambling and substance misuse. List shared risk and protective factors between problem gambling and substance misuse disorders List the barriers to collaboration between the problem gambling prevention field and substance misuse prevention Describe collaboration strategies for substance use prevention professionals and the problem gambling prevention field to improve public health and community conditions.   PRESENTER:  Rebecca Bishop, MSW Director, Massachusetts Center of Excellence for Problem Gambling Rebecca Bishop specializes in initiatives to improve the health, mental health, and well-being of youth and high-risk populations. She brings expertise in mental health promotion, health equity, cultural and linguistic responsiveness, community mobilization, and violence prevention and intervention. Bishop has a history of applying a health and racial equity lens to substance use, youth development, violence and problem gambling prevention, as well as mental health issues. She leads EDC’s Gambling Prevention Technical Assistance Center and has managed three regional planning processes across Massachusetts to learn about local knowledge, beliefs, and attitudes related to gambling, resulting in population-specific prevention strategies. Bishop holds an MA in Social Work, Health, and Mental Health Administration from Boston College Graduate School of Social Work and has a Certificate in Nonprofit Management and Leadership.   The Great Lakes A/MH/PTTC offered this training for individuals working in HHS Region 5: IL, IN, MI, MN, OH, WI. This training was provided in response to a need identified by Region 5 stakeholders.

Exploring the Science of Connection Behind Promoting First Relationships   May 25, 2022   Description Promoting First Relationships ® (PFR: Kelly et al., 2008) is a brief 10-week home visiting intervention designed for caregivers with infants or young children. PFR is a program that focuses on the quality of the caregiver-child relationship as a source of protection from toxic stress. Providers who learn to use PFR are trained to use strength-based strategies including positive feedback and reflective observation. Together these strategies help caregivers develop a deeper understanding of their child’s behavior which in turn increases their sensitivity to their child’s social and emotional needs. PFR uses video feedback to facilitate reflective observation and discussion. PFR has been evaluated in five randomized clinical trials: two trials in the child welfare system in Washington State; two trials within American Indian tribes; and one trial in a perinatal mental health setting. In this presentation, we will first describe the underlying conceptual model that leverages positive relationships as a source of resilience and then describe the PFR model of intervention. We will also show some videotaped examples of PFR in practice and conclude with a brief overview of the evidence base.    Objectives By the end of the webinar participants will be able to: Identify key elements why focusing on children birth-five promotes overall well-being across the life course. Articulate two strategies that Promoting First Relationships® uses to elevate resilience and caregiver’s strengths to support the Caregiver-Child relationship. Describe PFR home-visiting program and have a basic understanding of relationship-based models of promotion and prevention.   Presenter Monica Oxford, MSW, PhD, is a Research Professor in Child, Family, and Population Health Nursing at the University of Washington and the Executive Director of the Barnard Center for Infant Mental Health and Development. Her research focuses on early parenting and child developmental outcomes for families living in challenging environments. Dr. Oxford’s interest is in how context, parenting, and child characteristics combine to inform particular patterns of child outcomes and how intervention services promote both caregiver and child well-being. Dr. Oxford is also involved in training social service providers throughout Washington on infant mental health, strengths-based practice, and how providers can support caregiver-child dyadic interaction from an attachment-based perspective. Dr. Oxford is the principal investigator of four NIH grants; the first three are randomized control trials aimed at examining the impact of Promoting First Relationships® (PFR: Kelly et al, 2008). One Choice is not a program but a framework. Analogous to other standards that promote teen health, the standard for substance use is One Choice: no use of any alcohol, nicotine, marijuana, or other drugs by youth under age 21 for reasons of health. Data show that for American youth, all substance use is closely related – and that the percentage of young people making the decision not to use any substances has been increasing for nearly four decades. The One Choice Toolkit offers data, graphics, and ideas and activities to help communities create social norms campaigns, amplifying the voices of youth who are making One Choice to be drug-free.   Objectives By the end of the webinar, participants will: Articulate the One Choice prevention message and the brain science and national substance use trends behind it Identify ways the One Choice message can be successfully integrated into youth-led prevention activities and prevention education materials Access the One Choice Toolkit and brainstorm new resources that could enhance the integration of the One Choice message among prevention groups   Presenters   Caroline DuPont, MD is Vice President of the Institute for Behavior and Health, Inc. In her role as Vice President, Dr. DuPont focuses on the areas of addiction treatment and prevention. She maintains a private practice specializing in anxiety and addiction. Formerly she was the founding President and Principal Investigator of DuPont Clinical Research, Inc., where she directed a team that conducted studies of investigational medication for the anxiety and affective disorders. Dr. DuPont received her MD from the University of Texas Health Sciences Center, Houston and completed her training at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, where for years she held an appointment on the clinical faculty of psychiatry. She is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and by the American Board of Addiction Medicine. She is the co-author of numerous publications and several book chapters on anxiety and addiction.     Nancy Pasquale is Co-founder and Coalition Coordinator of RyeACT Coalition, a Drug Free Communities prevention coalition in Rye, NY. Her professional background is in human resources development and curriculum design, and she served for two terms as an elected Trustee of the Rye City School District Board of Education. Ms. Pasquale is a founding member of the One Choice Community, in partnership with the Institute for Behavior and Health, Inc., and a founding member of K.N.O.W. 2 Prevent, a collaborative of prevention leaders in Westchester County, NY. Nancy is also certified by the National Council for Mental Wellbeing as an instructor of Youth Mental Health First Aid. Ms. Pasquale oversees all programmatic aspects of RyeACT’s operations and serves as Co-Advisor of the Youth Action Team, working directly with youth leaders. Under her stewardship, RyeACT has been recognized by the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) for exemplary leadership in youth prevention and selected to the pilot cohort of CADCA’s Graduate Coalition Academy. A review of its history helps explain why we regulate the way we do including: why every state is a little different; “control" v. "license" systems; and a three-tier system. Also, the session will indicate how our systems control alcohol problems and point to credible research which confirms the efficacy of system measures.  By the end of the webinar, participants will be able to: Describe the history of alcohol in the United States before Prohibition and the problems which led to the 18th Amendment (Prohibition). Currently, she owns Public Action Management which operates an education campaign for a “Healthy Alcohol Marketplace.” From 1996 to 2003, she directed the Oregon Liquor Control Commission which included licensing, regulatory enforcement and operating Oregon’s distilled spirits business as a "control state". From 2003 to 2007, she worked at Oregon Partnership to direct statewide leadership and media campaigns to reduce underage drinking. Beginning in 2005, she developed the Campaign for a Healthy Alcohol Market, which is an education campaign designed to explain the purpose and objectives of alcohol regulation in simple terms. She has written several reports on deregulation in the United Kingdom and the US and produces a periodic report for policy makers called, “Issue Briefs.” These reports explain how deregulation can lead to increased social problems such as high rates of underage drinking, public order offenses and alcohol related disease. Pam has also served as an expert witness in key alcohol regulation cases in Kentucky, California, Indiana, and Michigan. Many of these issues—for example, easing retail restrictions for alcohol and marijuana and the devastating rise in fatal opioid overdoses nationally—we are aware of it. But, many we are not, in part because the pandemic has hindered our ability to collect data to better understand what is happening in our communities. We as prevention practitioners need to have data to tell the story of how the pandemic has affected substance misuse in our communities, and to use that data to bring partners to the table to plan, implement and support strategies to meet these new challenges. This four-part virtual learning event series, featuring two webinars and two interactive “learning labs”, will explore finding, collecting, understanding and, ultimately, using data to tell your community’s story through the covid-19 pandemic. It will provide you with the tools necessary to locate existing substance misuse-related data, fill in data gaps with local data collection, and troubleshoot issues relating to data quality. It will also highlight the importance of using data to create a compelling narrative about your community’s experience, interpreting data appropriately and framing it as a story that will resonate with your key stakeholders and the public alike. Has extensive knowledge of SAMHSA's Strategic Prevention Framework process and Strategic Initiatives. He is the Director of Training and Technical Assistance for SheRay's & Associates, LLC, Los Angeles, CA. He leads and directs the training needs of clients and as well as the development and implementation of training plans. He identifies experts needed to fulfill the client's needs. He oversees the 60+ expert Associates and Consultants utilized around the United States. He has received numerous certificates in training in prevention including awards for crime prevention as well as being the lead facilitator for a northern Illinois urban city for its comprehensive crime prevention plan. He was former President and is now lead consultant of Martin Luther King Jr. Community Services of Illinois. He led the implementation of a CSAP "High-Risk Youth" grant in reducing substance abuse in high-risk communities. He enjoys jogging and spending time with his grandchildren.

Through this career path, he honed his skills to help organizations adopt change. Despite the fascinating human element involved in helping people accept and adopt change, the singular focus on financial efficiency left him longing for more.     Invigorated by using his business, technical, and coaching skills for a larger purpose, Aric’s deep curiosity about personal and spiritual growth led him to coaching, mentoring, and, eventually, to form the TIC Training Center with Carl Donovan. Aric provides training on TIC to help organizations and groups implement a trauma-Informed paradigm in their personal, professional, and organizational lives.

Additionally, Dr. Haggerty is an investigator of the Community Youth Development Study, which tests the effectiveness of the Communities That Care program.   John Briney is the Senior Data Manager at the Social Development Research Group (SDRG) with more than 25 years of experience in social science research. The majority of his work at SDRG has focused on the Community Youth Development Study, a randomized test of the Communities That Care prevention planning system.  He currently manages data across several research projects and assists communities with the administration and analysis of the Communities That Care Youth Survey through his work with the Center for CTC. John has a background in Political Science and Public Administration. Dr. Barrington has extensive experience evaluating the impact of alcohol and drug abuse prevention programs and practices. He has five published, peer-reviewed articles, has been quoted in several scholarly articles, and has conducted over 200 program evaluations.           Nicole Schoenborn, MA, CPS, provides evaluation services for the South Southwest Prevention Technology Transfer Center funded by SAMHSA. Nicole is dedicated to building the capacity of the behavioral health workforce to reduce stigma associated with substance use and mental health issues and make data-informed decisions to improve prevention programs. Prior to joining the PTTC Network, Nicole provided training and technical assistance for SAMSHA's CAPT as a state/tribal liaison and was the Service to Science Lead for the Southwest Resource Team. For over 10 years, Nicole managed the evaluation and quality improvement services to community-based organizations, clinics, and prisons across Oklahoma working to prevent HIV and care for those living with the disease. Nicole has a master's in experimental psychology and is a Certified Prevention Specialist (CPS) through the International Credentialing and Reciprocity Consortium.

Self-Paced Online Courses: Demystifying Data: Gathering and Using Local Risk and Protective Factor Data for Prevention Part 1: Gathering Local Risk and Protective Factor Data for Prevention Part 1 of this two-part online course series will describe the importance of gathering data for community needs assessments and evaluation, including the types of data to collect. Participants will review key risk and protective factors associated with substance use and mental health. The course explores existing data sources, assessment of data gaps, and options for collecting primary data at the local level.  By the end of the course, participants will: Learn about key risk and protective factors to assess at the individual, family, peer, school, and community levels; Identify sources of existing data on risk and protective factors; and Assess strategies for developing a data collection plan to address data gaps at the local level.   Part 2: Using Local Risk and Protective Factor Data for Prevention During Part 2 of this online course series, participants will learn about data quality and quantity—having enough data and having the right data. The course explores processes for prioritizing risk and protective factors to determine which to address with prevention efforts and shares examples. This course will conclude with recommendations for ongoing monitoring to inform evaluation efforts.   Using GONA Principles to Implement the SPF in Native and Indigenous Communities   Webinar Date: February 9, 2021   Webinar Description This webinar will provide an overview of a training designed for Tribal communities to strengthen their ability to engage and sustain community stakeholder participation in the implementation of the Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF) using Gathering of Native Americans (GONA) principles at the tribal/village level. This training was developed to build the capacity of tribal prevention advocates who have little or no experience with the SPF and have voiced their need for more culturally appropriate strategies for SPF implementation. This effort strives to make the connection between GONA and the SPF and to ensure that the content is reflective of the core principle “Culture is Prevention” as evidenced by the focus on how traditional native culture sustainability strategies organically include the 5 steps of the SPF, while adhering to the core teachings of the GONA. The training uses the GONA curriculum as a lens to review the essential elements of the SPF: its benefits, its effectiveness, and especially, its cultural relevance. This webinar will take participants through the training itself, including the four phases of the GONA, while simultaneously introducing the appropriate step of the SPF that aligns with each phase. The last 15 minutes of this webinar will be dedicated to open discussion and Q&A with the presenter about accessing this training in the future.   Presenter Gerry RainingBird is an enrolled member of the Chippewa-Cree Tribe of Rocky Boy. Gerry has been involved with American Indian/Alaska Native education, health, and wellness promotion for nearly 30 years. His professional experience includes community mobilization and capacity building, positive youth development, cultural competency, group facilitation, strategic planning, and program development. He has worked with over 200 native communities across Indian Country and the Pacific Islands.
