Click "download" above to access: Slide Deck, Q/A, & Transcript   The Great Lakes MHTTC and PTTC present this webinar for prevention practitioners and mental health professionals in HHS Region 5: IL, IN, MI, MN, OH, and WI For many of us, the accumulated stress, grief, fatigue, and despair of the Covid-19 crisis pose a significant challenge to our coping resources. While this perfect storm of stressors may be unprecedented, there is much we know about how to cope with and manage stress, even at these levels.  In this talk, Dr. Kanter will describe new research on predictors of coping with the crisis and effective interventions for reducing depression and loneliness during the crisis. Dr. Kanter integrates these new findings with established science and offers strategies for managing the psychological consequences of the crisis in our everyday lives. Learning Objectives Review results of national research on effective coping tips during the pandemic (helpful in non-pandemic times as well) Understand and practice evidence-based mindfulness strategies for effective coping Understand and practice evidence-based strategies for improving well being and closeness with others   Presenter Dr. Jonathan Kanter is Director of the University of Washington’s Center for the Science of Social Connection. Over the course of his career, Dr. Kanter has investigated psychosocial interventions for depression, including how to disseminate culturally appropriate, easy-to-train, evidence-based approaches, with emphasis on evidence-based treatments such as behavioral activation for groups who lack resources and access to care. Dr. Kanter has published over 100 scientific papers and 9 books on these topics and his work has been funded by NIH, SAMHSA, state governmental organizations, foundations, and private donors. He is regularly invited to give talks and workshops nationally and internationally. When the COVID-19 crisis hit Seattle, the Center pivoted its resources to understand and mitigate the relational and mental health consequences of the crisis, to assist with public health efforts, and to inform the public dialogue with scientifically informed advice. Dr. Kanter has been asked to comment on the relational and mental health consequences of the crisis by, and the Center’s response to the crisis has been featured on, NPR, the BBC, the New York Times, the Huffington Post, National Geographic, and other local and national news outlets.

Effectively Managing Family Conflict: A Sample from Guiding Good Choices Virtual Parenting Program   December 10, 2020   Webinar Description Many families are experiencing the combined stressors of the pandemic and the pending holiday season. Prevention practitioners are seeking timely ways to reach out to families with relevant tools, practices and programs that are research-based and available in an online format. Join us for a session on effectively managing family conflict from the Guiding Good Choices curriculum. Kevin Haggerty and Dalene Beaulieu will model a virtual session from the Guiding Good Choices parent workshop series. This program is intended for professionals in HHS Region 1 (Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont).   The New England Prevention Technology Transfer Center Fellowship program is an opportunity for professionals who have been in the field of prevention for 5 or more years to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team to develop an innovative piece of research and accompanying tool for the benefit of the workforce at large. This program will support a seven-month term, during which the fellows will each create a tool or product around a central, priority subject area, and at the end of the program, the fellows will present their products to the workforce in a symposium meant to demonstrate how the products should and can be used.    The goal of the program is twofold: First, it supports the advanced development of skills for prevention professionals who have experience in the field so that they can continue to grow professionally. Fellows can expect to be credited with the creation of their product by the New England PTTC, where the products will be housed, and each Fellow may use the product as they see fit within their own career advancement. Second, the program creates new and original research and products which are specific to the New England region to support prevention professionals at all levels of experience. Each fellow will create their own product or tool using their research, and all six fellows will work together to be sure that their products complement one another and can be used in concert.    The program will optimally have one fellow from each of the six New England states and will provide each fellow with a total working stipend of $10,000. The term will begin in May of 2021 and will complete after the symposium, scheduled for November 2021. Each Fellow is expected to attend three collaborative meetings, a technical meeting prior to the symposium, and the symposium itself. Fellows will then remain active alumni of the program after completion of the term and may reapply for future terms of the program if desired.    Ideal candidates for the program have some experience with research and development and will be in contact with another professional who can offer them additional research and development guidance if necessary. Candidates will have the ability to work over the course of several months on the production of a tool or resource and will be able to work with a team on the presentation of the final products. Needs Assessment Parts 1 & 2    Dates  Part 1: February 19, 2020  Part 2: February 26, 2020    Description  Conducting a needs assessment is a crucial element of the Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF) and an integral part of a successful prevention planning process. Listen to the second episode of our Spotlight on Stigma podcast series: The Role of Faith Leaders.  Religious institutions offer support for people seeking help with a substance use or mental health disorder in an environment that respects their culture and values, with some studies finding that religious involvement is a protective factor for mental health and substance use. At the same time, religious beliefs about mental illness and substance misuse can lead to stigma, shame, and isolation if the illnesses are viewed as the result of sinful behavior or lack of faith. He has presented on Opioid Prevention strategies for communities (including faith based) and integrating cultural competence within opioid prevention strategies. Currently, Mr. Johnson is working with Ohio’s Partnership for Success Strategic Prevention Framework (PFS- SPF) SAMHSA funded statewide grant supporting twelve (12) rural Appalachian counties in developing coalitions to reduce the opioid crisis. His team has also provided training to SAMHSA Minority AIDS and HIV new grantees since 2010. Dave Shavel has extensive experience in the substance abuse prevention field at the community, state and federal levels as a community organizer, coalition director, trainer and technical assistance provider, researcher, and state prevention manager.  Dave specializes in technical assistance and training in the areas of strategic planning; needs, resource and readiness assessment; prevention program planning, implementation and evaluation; promoting youth involvement; and, community and state capacity building.

LGBTQ Youth Tobacco Prevention: COVID-19 and Lung Vulnerability Kate Bishop, MSSA December 9, 2020, 1-2 PM EST   COURSE DESCRIPTION LGBTQ populations are at higher risk for COVID-19 due in part to wildly disproportionate rates of smoking, vaping, and other forms of tobacco use. Tobacco dependence usually starts in adolescence, and studies have shown LGBTQ youth are especially vulnerable to substance misuse, predatory ad campaigns, and peer influence. This webinar will explore the rates, risks, and intersections of tobacco use and the novel coronavirus among queer and gender expansive teens and young adults. LEARNING OBJECTIVES Review current data on LGBTQ youth, tobacco use, and COVID-19. Examine the lung health impacts of COVID-19, smoking, and vaping in adolescents. Describe the unique vulnerabilities of LGBTQ youth that influence tobacco use. Explore best practices to support LGBTQ young people in avoiding or quitting their use of tobacco products. PRESENTER Kate Bishop, MSSA, the Education Coordinator at the LGBT Health Resource Center of Chase Brexton, is a seasoned professional development trainer with expertise in working with LGBTQ populations, sexual and reproductive health care, adolescent development, intimate partner violence, and sexual trauma. She is certified as a trainer through GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network) as well as SAGE (Services and Advocacy for GLBT Elders). Before joining the Chase Brexton team, she developed the capacity building program at the University of Maryland School of Medicine’s STAR TRACK Adolescent HIV program, providing cultural responsiveness trainings for agencies that serve sexual minority youth of color. Ms. Bishop holds a Bachelor of Arts in Gender Studies from Hiram College and a Masters in Social Work from Case Western Reserve University.
