The PTTC Network has identified seven areas to focus on the development of new resources and training for the prevention workforce across the country. One of those areas of focus is marijuana risk. A network-wide workgroup has been convened to develop and produce resources for the prevention field to use to support their efforts in implementing marijuana prevention and education. The mission of the PTTC Network Marijuana Risk Work Group is to develop training and technical assistance tools, products, and service, related specifically to marijuana risk education and prevention, that can be deployed across the nation. New England PTTC's Director, Scott Gagnon serves as the chair of this workgroup. The Marijuana Risk Work Group is pleased to release the first set of marijuana prevention and education resources. There are four products that are being released.  Each product is listed below along with a short description of the product, the suggested use, and a link to download the product.  For any questions or technical assistance needs for the utilization of these products, please contact the Northwest PTTC: [email protected]   Facts Vs Myths Information Sheet: This information sheet covers 7 common myths or misunderstandings related to marijuana. These include myths on addiction, impairment, and other health effects. Each of the 7 myths is countered with the current evidence, including citations. The goal is to provide a tool for prevention providers to help respond to and educate the public around these common myths. Use: Tool for use in prevention messaging and education to help dispel misconceptions that may persist in the community around marijuana. This tool may be also useful as a handout at prevention education events. Link to download   Cannabis Glossary – Terms by Topic There are many terms, slang words, and other nomenclatures related to marijuana. This glossary will help prevention professionals be more familiar with these terms, to increase competency when discussing these topics. Categories include plant anatomy, slang terms, terms related to marijuana products, cannabinoids, and other terms. Use: A Reference Guide for prevention providers to familiarize themselves with the many terms related to marijuana. Link to download Marijuana Science Education Slide Banks Two PowerPoint slide banks for prevention professionals to use in marijuana prevention and education work in their communities. The purpose of these slide banks is to provide prevention providers with researched and vetted tools they can feel confident in using in their marijuana prevention presentations.   “Marijuana and the Brain” focuses on the pharmacology of marijuana and how it affects the brain.Link to download “The Varied Forms, Potency, and Health Effects of Today’s Cannabis” covers the many forms of marijuana products, as well as trends in potency, and known health impacts. Link to download   Use: You can provide one or both of these slide banks as stand-alone presentations or integrate them into a presentation including local data, trends, and strategies for marijuana prevention. Each slide bank includes presenter notes to guide the speaker on presenting the information contained in the slides.  The slide banks also include references to all of the literature used to source the information presented.   NOTE: Please do not alter any of the slides. Saunders, MSSW, is the Wisconsin state project manager for the Great Lakes ATTC, MHTTC, and PTTC. While certification as a prevention specialist may seem daunting to some, this Virtual Learning Community will provide participants with an understanding of the prevention certification process: why it exists, who gives it, and what the minimum requirements are. The session will also address the need to increase the prevention Latino workforce nationwide to better serve Hispanic/Latino communities. The dialogue will include a first-hand account of the process and steps of a Hispanic/ Latino certified prevention Specialist who will share the experience of attaining the prevention certification. Besides, suggestions for the most effective way to prepare for the certification examination will be discussed. Also, we will provide some free resources and scholarships that may be available to those pursuing the prevention certification in the next four years. Moderator: Ivette A. At Mason, he served as Professor and Director of the Center for the Advancement of Public Health. He acquired over 180 grants and contracts, along with teaching courses on drug and alcohol issues, health communication and community health.  His professional work on drug and alcohol abuse prevention and wellness promotion spans over four decades.  His specialties include strategic planning, program development, needs assessment and evaluation, and health communication. His research, writing and training emphasize leadership skills, grounded and practical strategies, and healthy environments to maximize organizational, group and individual potential.

New England Prevention Technology Transfer Center Tip Sheet Topic:  Creating a Prevention Strategy for Monitoring and Responding to Emerging Drug Trends in Your Community In every New England community, drug trends will come and go, but a comprehensive, data-informed prevention plan can be effective no matter the drug use issue you are addressing.  Just as important, are the partnerships needed to help monitor what’s going on in the community, and for mobilizing a prevention response to those emerging trends. This tip sheet brings together key components communities and prevention organizations need to have in place to effectively monitor, and respond to, these emerging drug trends. Register and participate in this FREE self-paced course on ACEs and toxic stress:   Course Description: Those working with young children have long known the importance of early experiences and relationships in healthy child development. Newer terms such as toxic stress and ACES are used when describing these not-so-new ideas, and are particularly important when working with families impacted by substance abuse.  During this online training, learners will expand their current knowledge about early development to include up-to-date science that is accessible and useful in daily real-life interactions. Using a case-based approach, participants will apply new knowledge to familiar scenarios to enhance their engagement with high-risk young children and families.   Objectives: After completion of this training, learners will: Distinguish healthy stress and experiences from toxic stress and ACES. Connect early development milestones to safe, supportive relationships. Getting To Know ACT Missouri In this episode, we are speaking with Alicia Ozenberger, the deputy director of ACT Missouri.  ACT Missouri is a private not-for-profit corporation established in 1991 to promote drug and alcohol awareness throughout Missouri. They work with great community groups across the state to spread the message about making healthy choices. Act Mo also partner with national organizations like SADD and The Partnership for Drug-Free Kids. They also have a network of Regional Support Centers and community coalitions that we support, serving as a communication hub. Find out what's new in the updated version of the Substance Abuse Prevention Skills Training curriculum! The SAPST has been a staple in prevention professionals training since the early 1990s. Over the years it has been updated with current data, latest trends, and all around improvements. SAPST Master Trainers worked tirelessly last year and now bring you the most up-to-date and current SAPST curriculum.  During this episode, I speak with SAPST Master Trainer Dodi Swope and we unpack what is new in the curriculum.  The same SAPST you know and love: but with a new haircut.  Presenter: Dodi Swope, MEd, LMFT Dodi Swope recently joined the Southwest Prevention Center as a Training and Technical Assistant for the Region 6 Prevention Training and Technology Transfer Center. In this role, Dodi provides training and technical assistance to clients throughout Region 6 to assist them in achieving their substance misuse prevention outcomes. Dodi brings over 35 years of experience to this role, with a career that spans education, counseling psychology and public health. Most recently Dodi served as a training and technical assistance specialist at SAMHSA’s Center for the Application of Prevention Technologies (CAPT), working with states and tribes on their efforts to prevent substance misuse and substance use disorders. Dodi provided expertise on interventions across the lifespan and throughout the continuum of care to address the consequences of opioid misuse for the individual and their family and community. Dodi provided research and implementation expertise that included evidence-based programs for infants and toddlers in homes where opioid misuse is present, programs for affected children of elementary and middle school ages as well as more traditional high school prevention programs. Dodi also provided consultation on opioid overdose prevention, including harm reduction strategies and post overdose interventions to community leaders working on the ground to stem the tide of fatal opioid overdoses. Dodi’s passion is teaching others about the wonders of human development and assisting individuals, families, and communities in developing systems, programs, and interventions that support healthy people in healthy communities.  Dodi holds Bachelors in Education from Wheelock College with a major in Early Childhood Education, with a concentration in Special Needs. She also earned a Masters in Education; Major in Counseling Psychology, Family Therapy Program, from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. She is licensed as a Marriage and Family Therapist in the state of Massachusetts. Dodi’s background includes teaching in regular and special education settings and a clinical practice serving children and families impacted by substance use disorders in the Boston area for over ten years.
