Dr. Thomas is an Ohio Certified Prevention Consultant, with a Ph.D. in Health Education from the University of Cincinnati.Additionally Thomas she has served as a Consultant and presented numerous trainings and workshops at a wide array of venues and conferences that include but are not limited to: SAMHSA, The National Prevention Network Conference, and the Ohio Society for Public health Education.

Talking about Sex as Prevention: A Novel Use of Motivational Interviewing Julie Tenille, PHD April 15, 2020, 1-2:15 PM EST   COURSE DESCRIPTION Expression of sexuality and intimacy is not just a human right but fundamentally contributes to overall health and well-being. For persons with behavioral health conditions, sexuality and intimacy are inextricably tied to mental health recovery and quality of life. Unfortunately, the provider workforce (nursing, social work, medicine, among others) is not presently equipped to routinely engage in productive and guiding discussions about sexuality and intimacy with persons living with behavioral health conditions. Missed opportunities have great implications for prevention with a population more likely to be infected with HIV, hepatitis B and C, experience intimate partner violence, and contend with co-morbid substance use disorders. Research suggests brief education programs about sexual issues can result in sustained practice change if skills are integrated more deliberately to the extent that providers gain more confidence to skillfully engage in conversations about sexuality as a part of holistic care. Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a recovery-oriented evidence-based practice broadly useful in all health disciplines, applicable in a wide variety of contexts, with a variety of populations, and related to a vast typology of behavioral conversations. In response to research and advocacy, a training toolkit was published that employs the use of MI in experientially teaching providers the skills of MI and the practice of having conversations about sexuality and intimacy. This webinar highlights the contents of this training toolkit and underscores relevant skills for prevention activities. LEARNING OBJECTIVES Describe benefits of sexuality and intimacy for persons with behavioral health conditions. Explain provider barriers to communication about sexuality and intimacy with persons with behavioral health conditions. List strategies (informed by MI) for overcoming barriers to communication about sexuality and intimacy.   PRESENTER Dr. Julie Tennille is an Associate Professor at West Chester University in the Graduate Department of Social Work and a member of the international Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers. She has taught across the graduate practice curriculum for over 15 years and presently teaches a 5-day elective course on Motivational Interviewing (MI). Dr. Tennille has worked in direct practice, services research, and administration in public mental health and HIV/AIDS services for over 25 years. She has published several articles on Field Instructors Extending EBP Learning in Dyads (FIELD), an MI infused teaching intervention, aimed at synchronizing evidence based practice competencies among field instructors and their social work students. In collaboration with the Temple University Collaborative on Community Inclusion, Dr. Tennille has developed a training toolkit for mental health providers toward enhancing their ability to have discussions with clients about sexuality, intimacy, and dating.

The series will explain the importance of each stage and what aspects of the strategic planning process they cover, techniques for completing each stage, and strategies for overcoming obstacles. COURSE DESCRIPTION The fifth step to implementing a comprehensive, evidence-based approach to prevention is evaluate ongoing efforts and develop a feedback loop to make adjustments. This requires developing and following an evaluation plan and having processes in place to modify or change interventions that are not having a successful impact. This webinar will discuss evaluation strategies, maintaining epidemiological surveillance efforts, and steps to developing and maintaining an evaluation feedback loop. It will also walk through ways that technology can be used to support the evaluation process. Explore several models of laboratory research on drug misuse and examine how key findings from laboratory research provide evidence for major prevention and treatment effort About Michael Nader, Ph.D. Michael A. Nader, Ph.D. is a behavioral neuropharmacologist with research interest in the areas of substance abuse, impulsivity, brain dopamine receptor function and animal models of human disease. His research examines individual differences in drug effects, highlighting sex differences, social rank and drug history as important organismal variables that influence outcome. He studies cocaine, nicotine, THC, oxycodone and methamphetamine in models of drug reinforcement, cognition and the study of physiological consequences to chronic drug treatment using telemetry devices. For nearly 30 years, his laboratory has utilized an extremely novel animal model involving nonhuman primate social behavior and intravenous drug self-administration; the original studies involving socially housed male monkeys was recognized with a MERIT Award from the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA). Dr. Nader has served on the Board of Directors for College on Problems of Drug Dependence, is the past-chair of the Behavioral Pharmacology Division at the American Society of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics and is a past member of NIDA Council. He has been at Wake Forest School of Medicine since 1992 and has mentored 4 post-doctoral fellows, 11 Ph.D. students, 2 M.S. students and served on 26 dissertation committees. Dr. Nader is past Director of the Graduate Program in Physiology and Pharmacology, past Chair of the Dean’s Research Advisory Committee at Wake Forest School of Medicine and has had over 60 graduate and undergraduate students participate in laboratory rotations. In 2013 he gave a TEDx talk on US drug policy and the benefits of animal research. He was also the recipient of the 2015 College on Problems of Drug Dependence (CPDD) Mentorship Award.

Diane has worked on local and state level efforts to increase smoke free environments and reduce tobacco use in NJ for over 20 years. NJPN has mobilized advocates including youth leaders and prevention coalitions across the state to educate policy makers on issues that impact the health of our youth and adults. New Jersey was an early adopter of the New Jersey Smokefree Air Act of 2006, which now includes e-cigarettes and was the 3rd state to pass Tobacco 21 in 2017 and most recently, was the first in the country to have all parks and beaches be smoke free in 2018. The Tobacco Free for a Healthy NJ Initiatives is now New Jersey’s comprehensive tobacco control program which is led by NJPN on behalf of the NJ Department of Health. This project includes a youth engagement project, tobacco free college project and worksite project and continues the work for tobacco free multi-unit housing and point of sale initiatives. Diane works to foster collaboration, maximize resources and create healthier communities across NJ.  Jessica Goldberg - Jess is a training and technical assistance specialist with nearly a decade of supporting prevention efforts at the national, state, regional and local levels, as well as an accomplished designer and deliverer of in-person and virtual trainings that address topics ranging from collaboration across health sectors to identifying and addressing health disparities. Her past experience includes serving as a community health specialist with the Massachusetts state technical assistance system, supporting communities in needs assessment, strategic planning and creating logic models to guide change efforts, and then with the Center for the Application for Prevention Technologies or CAPT, and now with the PTTC, where she works closely with states and community coalitions to adopt and apply data-driven prevention planning processes and implement evidence-based and promising prevention practices  Ivy Jones Turner - For over 20 years, Ivy has provided organizational capacity assistance on health promotion and prevention in substance abuse, suicide, violence, injury, and mental health with nonprofit and community-based organizations, state and faith-based agencies, and school districts. Her capacity building skills include program evaluation, training and technical assistance in program design and implementation, organizational development, partnerships/collaborations, and grant management. - PTTC Network Launches New Marijuana Prevention and Education Toolkit - Today we will be talking with Scott Gagnon from the New England PTTC. Scott is a Certified Prevention Specialist and the Director of AdCare Educational Institute of Maine, Inc., and Director of the New England Prevention Technology Transfer Center.  Scott has a Master’s Degree in Public Policy from the Edmund S. Muskie School of Public Service.  Appointed by the Maine Speaker of the House, Scott serves as the public health representative on Maine’s Marijuana Advisory Commission.  Scott chairs the marijuana prevention advocacy & education group, Smart Approaches to Marijuana, Maine and has also served as Co-Chair of the Prevention Task Force for the Maine Opiate Collaborative.  Scott recently served on the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP) National Advisory Council. In addition to his role as Director for the New England PTTC, Scott has been a marijuana science trainer for the New England Addiction Technology Transfer Center. Scott has received numerous awards including the Patrick J. Kennedy Outstanding Advocate Award from Smart Approaches to Marijuana in 2017. Scott trains and presents both in New England and nationally on marijuana science and policy, as well as on opioid prevention and prevention workforce development.  He will be sharing their work at the New England PTTC and his work for the national PTTC marijuana workgroup. There are tons of resources available to anyone and everyone!

The New England PTTC is pleased to release the final report of its 2019 prevention workforce needs assessment. Beginning in September 2018, New England Prevention Technology Transfer Center conducted a prevention workforce needs assessment in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont. This needs assessment was conducted by the New England PTTC's evaluation sub-contractor, Public Consulting Group, Inc. (PCG).  The needs assessment had the following five objectives:   1. Define substance use prevention, concretely and operationally, in a way that is meaningful for professionals in the field and can be used across state lines to discuss prevention on a larger scale; 2. Identify the current landscape of the New England prevention workforce; 3. Identify strengths and needs among New England states in the prevention workforce; 4. Evaluate current prevention workforce recruitment strategies; and, 5. Offer recommendations for training and technical assistance for new and advanced prevention professionals in the field.   The attached report outlines current service availability, gaps, and needs for substance use prevention professional education and accreditation. Specifically, it highlights state-level prevention workforce recruitment strategies, the utilization and promotion of prevention certification and training needs for the New England prevention workforce. The New England PTTC will use this report as a major basis for the development of training and technical assistance services offered and provided to the field in the New England states.     The New England PTTC will soon schedule a live webinar providing an overview of the report.  Stay tuned!

SERIES DESCRIPTION This six-part webinar series developed by the Central East PTTC will support and build the capacity of the prevention workforce. The series is a skill building training that will detail the steps to implementing a comprehensive, evidence-based approach to prevention using the five stages of SAMHSA’s Strategic Prevention Framework: 1) Needs Assessment, 2) Building Capacity, 3) Planning, 4) Implementation, and 5) Evaluation. The series will explain the importance of each stage and what aspects of the strategic planning process they cover, techniques for completing each stage, and strategies for overcoming obstacles. This series will also discuss other relevant topics, such as: ethical approaches to prevention, how to prioritize data, and how to modify programs, among others. COURSE DESCRIPTION The first step to implementing a comprehensive, evidence-based approach to prevention is to understand, to the fullest extent possible, the surrounding substance use landscape. This requires collecting, analyzing, understanding, and prioritizing data from multiple sources to develop a complete picture of the issues that need to be addressed. This webinar will describe how to conduct a substance use needs assessment, discuss potential data sources and how to access them, and explain techniques for analyzing and prioritizing needs assessment results. It will also walk through ways that technology can be used to support the needs assessment process. Josh has extensive experience in substance use prevention; researching, writing, and presenting on best practice and knowledge development publications, briefs, and reference guides; and developing and providing T/TA to numerous organizations. He developed numerous SAMHSA Center for the Application of Prevention Technologies’ (CAPT) products on strategies to prevent opioid misuse and overdose, risk and protective factors for substance use, youth substance use prevention strategies, youth substance use trends, emerging substance use trends, the potential regulations surrounding marijuana legalization, as well as numerous other topics. Emily Patton, MSc, PgDip holds a Masters of Science in Abnormal and Clinical Psychology from Swansea University and a Postgraduate Degree in Criminology and Criminal Justice from the University of Edinburgh. She offers significant professional experience in the fields of public policy development and analysis, criminal justice research, data collection and analysis, program development, and performance management.

She has been working in the field of prevention since 2001. Nicole has a Master of Public Health degree from The George Washington University School of Public Health. Nicole is a passionate prevention provider, committed to supporting initiatives designed to address the complex substance use issues affecting our society. Nicole is going to share her expertise on the Prevention Specialist certification, the six domains under the credential, and outline the benefits of becoming credentialed.
