The Seven Vital Conditions for Health and Well-Being: A Framework for Community Action in Skagit County February 7, 2024   Webinar Description What does it take for communities to thrive? This webinar will provide an overview of the seven vital conditions for well-being and illustrate how it can be a useful framework for conceptualizing holistic individual and community well-being. The presenters will demonstrate how the framework can help address issues related to a community response to mental health and well-being, substance use disorder, and substance misuse prevention in Skagit County, WA, with North Star Project. The framework is used by multiple state and federal agencies, including The Federal Plan for Equitable Long-Term Recovery and Resilience as a guiding framework to organize and take action on social determinants of health. The framework can support efforts to achieve the transformative change needed to build a strengths-based and community-driven response to creating conditions that promote well-being. He has held positions with Kaiser Permanente, Oregon Health and Science University, and the University of North Carolina. His client engagements focus on achieving meaningful progress by increasing coherence in thought and action. A frequent collaborator with ReThink Health, he is dedicated to developing cases and practices that drive equitable system change.   Jennifer Johnson Jennifer Johnson serves as Deputy County Administrator for Skagit County.  Ms. Johnson has worked for Skagit County since 2003 and her background spans the fields of public health, nutrition, and organizational management.  Ms. Johnson has over 28 years leadership experience, with specific interest and experience in advancing organizational and community systems to advance the development of public policy that addresses community-level health and social problems.   As the prior Public Health Director for Skagit County, Ms. Johnson was committed to creating a culture of health and wellness for all of Skagit County, with an expanded focus on social determinants of health, strengthening public-private partnerships, increasing connection between public health and clinical health, and implementing an outcomes driven approach to program and policy development.  She earned a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and Food Management from Oregon State University in 1996, and then completed the Mid-Willamette Dietetics Residency Program, becoming a registered Dietitian in 1998.   Questions Contact Kathy Gardner ([email protected]) if you have additional questions about the content related to this webinar.

The intersecting challenges of social drivers of health and development of racial trauma in communities of color will also be explored.   Is your organization as welcoming and responsive to the LGBTQ+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer) population as it could be? How can we facilitate more affirming and effective prevention services for members of the LGBTQ+ community? In this webinar, we will explore some of the ways we can increase positive outcomes with LGBTQ+ individuals, from outward-facing initial points of contact with our organizations to long-term internal actions toward increased representation and leadership.  We will also hear from a panel of LGBTQ+-identified young adults about their experiences with prevention providers and their thoughts for the field moving forward.   LEARNING OBJECTIVES: After the training, participants will be able to: Review their own workplace practices with an eye to where processes could be made more welcoming and affirming Implement workplace practices that have been shown to increase positive behavioral health outcomes for LGBTQ+ individuals Integrate the perspectives of individual LGBTQ+-identified young adults into their prevention work   PRESENTER: Marissa Carlson, MS, CPS Marissa is the Executive Director of the NH Teen Institute, a leadership development nonprofit working with middle & high school students from around NH & New England in a variety of areas including substance misuse prevention, peer mentoring, and creating positive school & community climate.   As part of her role at TI, she oversees and facilitates training for youth participants, youth & adult volunteer program staff, and outside behavioral health and education professionals.  She is a trainer for multiple workshops developed through SAMHSA systems, and is a member of the advisory council of the New England Prevention Technology Transfer Center (PTTC).  In addition, she is the President of the Prevention Certification Board of NH, the NH Prevention delegate to the IC&RC, and serves as the chairperson of the Prevention Specialist credentialing committee.  Outside of her prevention work, Marissa is a founding member of Mill City Productions, a theatre company in Western Massachusetts.  She graduated from Pomona College with a BA in Psychology, received an MS in Nonprofit Management from Bay Path University, and has been a Certified Prevention Specialist since 2011.

Webinar Description Using equitable language is a skill that can be learned and applied in the work we do as prevention professionals, paving the way to greater successes at achieving our outcomes,   This interactive event included the following learning objectives:  • Defining “equitable language” to support prevention professionals’ efforts to reach their intended audience  • Learning about the benefits of using equitable language in communication tools and events  • Identifying strategies for using equitable language as part of a community engagement approach when building partnerships and sharing information with communities of focus    Presenter Information Sarah Gabriella Hernandez is an evaluator and researcher specializing in community-engaged and participatory approaches. She has collaborated with diverse organizations and community partners across Chicago to conduct mixed-methods research, culturally responsive and developmental evaluations, program development and coordination, community health assessments, and dissemination. Dr. Hernandez leads evaluation projects that focus on evaluation capacity building and improving equity in health and education. Her recent areas of work include substance use services and recovery, trauma-informed work, and health equity in education.    Ivy Jones Turner, MPA, CPS is an expert in behavioral and mental health promotion and prevention, as well as an experienced program leader, technical assistance (TA) specialist, applied researcher, and evaluator. Her expertise includes building the capacity of schools and organizations to research, implement, evaluate, and sustain interventions to prevent substance misuse, suicide, youth violence, and bullying, and to promote social-emotional and mental health. Ivy holds an MA in Public Administration from Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government and is a certified specialist in prevention and conflict mediation in Massachusetts.    Additional Documents PowerPoint Flyer

LGBTQ Youth and Substance Use Disorder Kate Bishop, MSSA July 26, 2023, 1:00pm-3:00pm EST COURSE DESCRIPTION It’s been a tough year for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) youth, as access to gender affirming health care, youth sports, and drag performances are vilified and outlawed in one state after another. Far from value-neutral, overhearing this political discourse too often leads to life-threatening shame, despair, and self-harm thoughts and feelings for young people just coming into their LGBTQ identity. As in many communities that experience discrimination, LGBTQ young people may overuse substances to cope with a hostile environment that insults their humanity. Though youth are especially vulnerable, LGBTQ people across the lifespan are at markedly higher risk for mental health challenges and harmful substance use than the public. Evidence has shown that identity-targeted interventions can be effective in supporting wellness within these communities. This webinar will describe these disparities, explore what makes young LGBTQ populations particularly vulnerable, provide suggestions about how best to support a young queer, trans, or nonbinary individual in crisis, and consider Sexual and Gender Minority (SGM)-targeted prevention frameworks and strategies. LEARNING OBJECTIVES Define the impact of social determinants of health, including prejudice and discrimination, family rejection, trauma, and stress-related illness, on the substance use behaviors of Sexual and Gender Minority (SGM) youth populations, highlighting how current policy conversations and conditions are affecting the population. Describe LGBTQ sub-cultural norms, attitudes, myths, and messages around substance use and misuse. Identify community-targeted intervention strategies to support SGM youth struggling with substance use disorder. PRESENTERS Kate Bishop, MSSA, Education Coordinator at the LGBT Health Resource Center of Chase Brexton, is a seasoned professional development trainer with expertise in working with LGBTQ populations, sexual and reproductive health care, adolescent development, intimate partner violence, and sexual trauma. She is certified as a trainer through GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network) as well as SAGE (Services and Advocacy for GLBT Elders). Before joining the Chase Brexton team, she developed the capacity building program at the University of Maryland School of Medicine’s STAR TRACK Adolescent HIV program, providing cultural responsiveness trainings for agencies that serve sexual minority youth of color. Ms. Bishop holds a Bachelor of Arts in Gender Studies from Hiram College and a Masters in Social Work from Case Western Reserve University.

The five-part series Structural Inequities Affecting Prevention Practice w/ Nicole M Augustine is available on rewind from the Mid-America PTTC. Nicole's experience will bring to life a balance of topics during each episode of the series. Session 1: Foundational concepts - Why equity matters in our work? This session will set the stage for understanding basic concepts related to behavioral health equity, the connection to adverse childhood experiences, and how environmental strategies create systemic change. Session 2: Equity in data - How we collect, analyze, and share data affect our work on many levels. How can we strategically focus our services if we don’t accurately identify the structural inequities in our communities? Session 3: Equity in people - Capacity is twofold and should be evaluated as such; The diversity and inclusion of a variety of experiences at the “table", and The diversity of resources in the community to address the substance misuse need. Session 4: Equity in the planning - Developing cultural adaptations while using evidence-based interventions can be a challenge. We will discuss how to embed equity into program planning to ensure the co-creation of projects with community members. Session 5: Equity in action - Knowledge without action is like a car with no gas or a phone with no battery! We will end the week by creating a personal action plan designed to help us commit to putting our knowledge into action. Nicole Augustine has been working in the field of prevention since 2001 and is the creator and founder of RIZE Consultants, LLC. She connects to her audience in a unique way, utilizing Zoom and other social media apps. Nicole's experience will bring to life a balance of topics during each day of the series, including why equity matters, and equity in data, building capacity, planning and action.

Health Equity Foundations for the African American Population November 29, 2022   Learning Session Overview and Objectives In this learning session, we will define terms that are essential to the discussion around health equity as well as the roots of how inequities were formed in African American communities.  We will also journey into the African American population and the impact of disparities, before ending in what roles we can play in prevention to help create equity. This Learning Session will be formatted as a 45-minute presentation followed by a 45-minute facilitator-led discussion. By the end of this learning session, participants will be able to: Discover how health disparities and other inequities play a role in behavioral health and substance use/misuse of the African American Population Define terminology linked to the discussion of health equity Describe the role of cultural competence and cultural humility   Presenter: Albert Gay, M.S. This webinar will facilitate a different worldview in understanding, identifying, and treating substance use problems. It will review how social injustices impact substance use problems and knowledge of how the webinar can address those injustices in our communities. Evidence-based approaches, such as person-centered and harm reduction, will set the foundation for tackling issues that interfere with substance use prevention among individuals and communities. LEARNING OBJECTIVES Identify the extent of substance use problems and addiction Describe social injustices, consequences associated with those injustices, and their impact on substance use prevention. Define the goals and core principles of person-centered and harm reduction approaches. Utilize person-centered and harm reduction strategies to engage and retain clients in prevention care. PRESENTERS Lisa Connors, LCPC, NCC, MAC, ABD is an Associate Pastor at In His Image International Ministry, Inc. She is a Licensed Bachelor Social Worker, Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor, National Certified Counselor, Board-Certified Coach, Master Addiction Counselor, Certified Clinical Trauma Professional, and Certified Grief Counseling Specialist. Ms. Connors is Certified in Thanatology [the study of death, dying, and bereavement]. She has been in the human services/social work/counseling fields for 30 years and has worked in a variety of settings providing services to the despondent and downtrodden. Ms. Connors works tirelessly to help others reach their fullest potential in life, supporting and empowering those who have been oppressed, stigmatized, marginalized, and victimized. Her greatest passion is working with, serving, and providing training related to individuals affected by HIV/AIDS, substance use and mental health disorders, violence/abuse/trauma, grief and loss, racial and social injustices. Ms. Connors is a mental health therapist providing services to individuals who have co-occurring issues. In addition to her pastoral and clinical work, Ms. Connors is a college professor. She has taught at the University of Maryland and is currently teaching at Anne Arundel Community College in Maryland. Like many women of color, Ms. Connors has experienced various forms of oppression. Ms. Connors earned her Bachelor of Social Work, Master of Divinity, Master of Arts in Professional Counseling degrees, respectively, and is a Doctoral Candidate completing her Ph.D. in Psychology.

The six elements work together to support a coalition’s capacity to achieve desired outcomes in a community. Every other month, beginning in May and ending in December, you will be able to access a new video on strategies to develop the 6 elements of effective coalitions. This series serves as a follow-up to the Prevention Coalition Affinity Group Series. As the strategies to rejuvenate your coalition evolves, these videos may give you and your coalition concrete practices that will increase prevention outcomes. In this first 10-minute video, Strategies to Develop Diverse Stakeholders, we explore strategies to build coalitions with diverse stakeholders. In this second recording, Opportunities for Participation, we will discuss how to encourage active participation amongst coalition members. In the third video, What is Coalition Efficiency, we will outline strategies for developing coalition members skills and knowledge. In part four, Coalition Cohesion, Sarah Davis, SSW PTTC consultant will describe three components that foster cohesion in a coalition. In part five, Developing New Skills, Sarah Davis discusses 1)What information do coalition members need to know in order to help the coalition achieve its goals? 2)What do coalition members need to be able to do? 3)What skills do they need in order to be effective? In this last video Goal Directedness, Derrick Newby, SSW PTTC T/TA Specialist and Sarah Davis, SSW PTTC Associate dive into practical steps coalition leaders can take to set their coalitions up for success.

Webinar Description  Research suggests that race and ethnicity are predictors of how services are delivered, and implicit bias is one component that has been identified as influencing the provision of poor care. The elusiveness of unconscious bias underscores provider perception, unwitting use of stigmatic language, and influences assumptions and micro aggressions affecting a person's capacity to respond to care. This interactive 2-hour training discussed how cognitive bias develops, is sustained by intrinsic and environmental factors, and contributes to inequitable outcomes for persons of color. The content also informed on bias-reducing techniques and person-first language approaches that can enhance provider-client interactions and outcomes for marginalized communities. The Presenters  Diana Padilla is a Research Project Manager at New York State Psychiatric Institute, Columbia University Medical Center. Challenges are important to overcome because participation by youth and young adults is a powerful means of driving community-level behavior change. During this webinar, a panel of youth and young adult prevention leaders discusses how to successfully foster authentic partnerships which lead to sustainable change. PowerPoint   PRESENTERS Chuck Lester serves as Community Based Prevention Services Grants Manager for Oklahoma State University’s Community Wellness Programs. In this capacity he works with local stakeholders to reduce the consequences of substance abuse across the region through the use of evidence-based, environmental strategies.  Previously Chuck served as the Region's Strategic Prevention Framework coordinator. Much of this work focused on reducing underage drinking in Payne County. As the Students Working Against Tobacco (SWAT) Coordinator, he was responsible for recruiting, training and sustaining SWAT groups at local schools. These student groups sought to complete anti-tobacco advocacy campaigns such as getting their school to pass 24/7 tobacco free policies. For the last 11 years he has coordinated various grants that seek to solve local substance use and abuse problems through the use of the Strategic Prevention Framework model by empowering youth.       Chieftess Olufemi Yeshua EL is a consultant, diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging strategist, and educator. She serves as the chair of the NY Association for the Education of Young Children Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee. In this role, she is helping the organization become an anti-racist organization. She reviews the organization's strategic plan, works with various committees to analyze their work from a DEI lens, and helps educators across New York state be more impactful within their work with Black Indigenous People Of Color (BIPOC) children, and families with a focus on DEI. She holds a Master's degree in Early Childhood Education and Teaching and she is the founder and co-chair of the Parents of Children of Color Affinity Group.

Health Equity Across Systems and Sectors: Tales from A Colorado Journey July 13, 2022   On-the-Spot Consultation Description and Objectives During this On-the-Spot Session, participants will hear about system change efforts in Colorado focused on building equity into the work of substance misuse prevention at both the state and local levels. Participants will be introduced to a Community and Society-Level Strategies Menu developed with the goal of reducing risk factors and improving protective factors for adolescent substance misuse in Colorado. In addition, presenter Marc Morgan will share examples and lessons learned from working with coalitions to engage multiple sectors in environmental change strategies that build healthier, more equitable communities for everyone. Come with your questions related to this topic, as we will provide ample time for Q&A.    By the end of the session participants will be able to: Identify two lessons learned from Colorado's journey in building health equity  Articulate how environmental strategies can be used to build healthier communities for everyone   Presenter Marc Morgan, is currently Community Organizing for Prevention - Manager for the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment in this role he provides strategic oversight, direction, and execution of substance abuse prevention grants to local communities across Colorado. This includes responsibility for key prevention program implementation support, including fidelity to the Communities That Care model, effective analysis of and implementation support for community-level primary prevention strategies, professional expertise in addressing substance abuse prevention using a risk and protective factor approach, expertise in applying prevention strategies to improve health equity, and integration of program evaluation across funded sites. Prior to Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, he served as Director of Programs for Denver Kids Inc., and Managing Director of Program, Service, Operations, and Recruitment for City Year Denver.  Marc received his B.A. in sociology, B.S. in the administration of justice, and minor in information systems and statistical analysis from Penn State University. He also recently participated as a W.K. Preventing and Disrupting Stigma Associated with Substance Use Disorders July 6, 2022   Webinar Description and Objectives According to the Cambridge Dictionary of the English Language, "stigma" is defined as "A strong feeling of disapproval that most people in a society have about something, especially when this is unfair." Throughout history, vulnerable populations and individuals have often been stigmatized and "othered." Stigma disproportionately influences health outcomes and the mental well-being of individuals who experience a substance use disorder by creating barriers to engaging in early intervention, treatment, and effective recovery. This presentation will explore the root causes and the unjust consequences of stigma. Participants will investigate best practices prevention practitioners can use to identify, critically examine, and overcome personal biases and reduce the stigma associated with SUDs while promoting resilient families, organizations, and communities. By the end of the webinar, participants will be able to: List common components and three levels of stigma Describe the impact of stigma on vulnerable populations and key community sectors Explore strategies for changing attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors that can lead to stigma and discrimination Identify best practices for preventing and disrupting stigma within and across relevant community sectors   Presenter Nigel Wrangham, CADC II, CPS has been a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor Level II and a Certified Prevention Specialist since 2000. In addition, he has been a preschool teacher, a group manager in a halfway house for federal prisoners on parole, a parenting educator for families experiencing homelessness, and the National Youth Coordinator for Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD). For 15 years, Nigel taught university courses in the science of addiction, the history of drugs in America, community organizing, and self-discovery through activities and play. When he worked in Uganda as a photographer documenting the behavior of wild chimpanzees, he also taught forest conservation to young people in local villages. Nigel has been in private practice as a workshop facilitator and trainer since 2003. His passion is supporting young people to discover and use the tools they need to build the equitable, just, and healthy society they deserve. He works with groups across the United States, sharing prevention, social justice, brain development, and youth leadership skills. Besides working to help youth find and use their power to become change agents, Nigel spends time at home in Eugene, Oregon, with his wife, his two disobedient cats, and his baby son.
