This is part 2 of the “4 E’s Learning Lab” series. Presenters will describe and explore a) how the 4 E’s can be applied in prevention work and b) how the 4 E’s can be implemented throughout the Strategic Prevention Framework. Learning Objectives: Describe how the 4 E’s intersect with the Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF)  Provide insights into how the 4 E’s can be operationalized within the SPF Network with prevention providers, community coalitions and community partners on how to apply the 4 E’s in their work. About the Presenters:     Carlton Hall is the President and CEO of Carlton Hall Consulting LLC (CHC), a multi-faceted, full-service consulting firm designed to provide customized solutions and enable measurable change for communities, organizations, families, and individuals. Carlton Hall has been providing intensive substance abuse prevention focused and community problem solving services to the nation for the last 25 years. Currently, Carlton and the CHC team provide executive training and technical assistance support to the Southeast PTTC (Region 4)       Dorothy Chaney is the Founder of Wisconsin Community Health Alliance, an organization committed to supporting coalitions, agencies, and individuals to improve the health of their communities and the environments in which they live. Dorothy is committed to equity in community health and works with communities both nationally and internationally to address health disparities and support the development of local solutions to complex problems. For more than 20 years, Dorothy has worked with community-based coalitions to address the impact of substance use on youth and families. Dorothy has also served on many state level work groups and advisory committees in Wisconsin. Chaney also works with communities to implement collective impact approaches to improve community health.

In addition, we looked at how the process of developing of the logic model and using it fits within good prevention planning. Includes a Q&A session in the final segment, which addresses questions attendees submitted.   Presenter Information Jess Goldberg is a Training and Technical Assistance Specialist with Education Development Center. For over a decade, Jess has specialized in building capacity to improve behavioral health at the national, state, regional and local levels. Her areas of expertise include preventing youth substance use; promoting cross-sector collaborations; addressing health disparities; strategic planning, logic model development, and sustainability planning.  Jess is a Certified Prevention Specialty and holds an MSW and an MPH from Boston University.    Shai Fuxman is a behavioral health expert and senior research scientist. He leads initiatives promoting the positive development of youth and has extensive experience in social and emotional learning (SEL), school-based trauma-informed care, and substance misuse prevention. He also has expertise in program evaluation, cultural competence, and quantitative and qualitative research.   As prevention professionals, we spend much of our time facilitating trainings for our peers and various community sectors. Facilitators juggle many roles, from keeping the group focused to exploring ways to promote the application of new knowledge. But how do you learn to do this? This workshop explored what makes the "perfect" facilitator and the impact the facilitator has on the training and participants. Many of you may have found yourself in a situation where you are ready to deliver an outstanding presentation, only to encounter a distraction. Distractions, whether intentional or not, happen. As facilitators, how we respond to distractions is a good indicator of how successful the presentation will be. It's best to be prepared for potential distractions so that we are ready just in case they occur. This workshop discussed the importance of setting group norms and expectations to create presentations that will benefit all learning styles. There was a discussion of the different types of participants. Finally, there was a discussion of strategies for working with all participants and situations that could arise during your presentation.   Learning Objectives: Identify instructional design theories, seat placement practices, and speaking styles that can help create the "perfect" presentation. Demonstrate skills needed to engage all audiences to accommodate different learning styles and develop capacity for managing difficult people and situations in a program setting. Recognize the types of different participants, the effects of disruptive audience members on others and the behavior of the perfect participant.   About the Presenter: Jordon Hillhouse is a Certified Prevention Specialist with over ten years of experience in substance use prevention. In the past, he has worked with state agencies targeting the opioid crisis, underage drinking, and mental health awareness efforts. His passion is with alcohol and drug prevention education. He has developed many prevention-related trainings and has had the opportunity to speak to thousands of people across the country. He holds a master’s degree in business administration from Alcorn State University and is a published author. He currently works at the Mississippi Public Health Institute as the Workforce Development Manager, where he oversees the Mississippi Behavioral Health Learning Network, providing relevant trainings to state and national mental health professionals.

While building protection for all our young people is a common and aspirational goal for many from diverse walks of life, schools present a unique opportunity and challenge for doing so. This report describes a set of simple yet powerful practices that, when used consistently by teachers, can enhance middle school student agency and build student success skills. This report summarizes these activities and aligns the evidence-based practices to the components of the Social Development Strategy, a strategy for enhancing daily interactions with young people that have been proven to have far-reaching positive effects on their development.

Webinar: Working to Promote Protection by Supporting LGBTQ+ Teens in Foster Care December 8, 2022   Webinar Description Youth in foster care face unique risk and protective factors related to substance misuse. LGTBQ+ youth in foster care need explicit support and acceptance; however, few caseworkers and caregivers receive specialized training. To address this, the Connecting: Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Expression (SOGIE) eLearning was developed. During this webinar, participants will learn about the importance of gender-affirming care for adolescence. Her work involves developing and evaluating programs and policies to improve the lives of children and families in the child welfare system. Susan is the principal investigator of Strive, a curriculum-based program designed to facilitate quality visits between parents and their children in foster care. She is a co-investigator of Connecting, a program for teens and their foster or relative caregivers aimed at preventing teens’ initiation of risky behaviors. Connecting has also developed a new module addressing the unique needs of LGBTQ2S teens in foster care. The module is available in the Alliance for Child Welfare Excellence training catalogue for caregivers. Throughout Susan’s career, she has focused on the social determinants of health and the elimination of inequities in health and wellness. She served on the Washington State Racial Disproportionality Advisory Committee until the committee ended in 2018. Susan earned a Ph.D. in epidemiology from Yale University and a B.A. in psychology and biology from Antioch College. She completed a National Institute of Mental Health-funded postdoctoral fellowship in Family Violence at The Children's Hospital in Boston, MA, where she also held a faculty appointment in pediatrics at Harvard Medical School. She holds affiliate faculty appointments within the University of Washington Schools of Public Health and Social Work. Kym Ahrens MD, MPH, University of Washington Department of Pediatrics. Dr. Ahrens is an Associate Professor of General Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine at Seattle Children's Hospital and the University of Washington School of Medicine. She also serves as Medical Director for the Washington State Department of Children, Youth, and Families Juvenile Rehabilitation System (DCYF JR. She conducts research to identify needs and improve outcomes for youth exposed to early adversity including systems-involved and gender-diverse youth.  Kevin P. Haggerty, M.S.W., Ph.D Dr. Haggerty is a professor emeritus at the University of Washington School of Social Work. He is the former director of the Social Development Research Group where he specialized in the delivery of prevention programs at the community, school and family level. For over three decades, he has focused on developing innovative ways to organize the scientific knowledge base for prevention so that parents, communities and schools can better identify, assess, and prioritize customized approaches that meet their needs. He has served as principal investigator on a variety of intervention-focused federally funded grants. An expert on substance abuse and delinquency prevention, Dr. Haggerty speaks, conducts trainings, and writes extensively on this field. He is a former board member and Fellow of the Society for Prevention Research and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Social Work and Social Welfare and is a prevention science reviewer for periodicals such as Prevention Science.   Questions? It’s Not about Me…It’s about Us Part 3: What’s Next: Applying the Knowledge and Skills Lab Lisa Connors, LCPC, NCC, MAC, ABD December 1, 2022, 2:00pm-3:30pm EST COURSE DESCRIPTION What happens with professionals working in prevention work? Where do they go from here? What is the takeaway messages in moving forward with clients? What do professionals need, what do they want, what is working, and what can be added to be proficient in serving clients who need them the most? The question is: What's Next? What's next for professionals in preventing substance use, misuse, and addictions among clients? This webinar will offer space for open dialogue and hands-on practices on how professionals can implement strategies, techniques, and tools in their work to benefit clients and communities. LEARNING OBJECTIVES Summarize how communication and relationships are vital components in substance use prevention work. Identify resources that are needed to continue providing adequate services. Formulate a collaborative approach by networking and building partnerships with other professionals in substance use prevention work. Demonstrate strategies, techniques, and tools to provide substantial prevention work. PRESENTERS Lisa Connors, LCPC, NCC, MAC, ABD is an Associate Pastor at In His Image International Ministry, Inc. She is a Licensed Bachelor Social Worker, Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor, National Certified Counselor, Board-Certified Coach, Master Addiction Counselor, Certified Clinical Trauma Professional, and Certified Grief Counseling Specialist. Ms. Connors is Certified in Thanatology [the study of death, dying, and bereavement]. She has been in the human services/social work/counseling fields for 30 years and has worked in a variety of settings providing services to the despondent and downtrodden. Ms. Connors works tirelessly to help others reach their fullest potential in life, supporting and empowering those who have been oppressed, stigmatized, marginalized, and victimized. Her greatest passion is working with, serving, and providing training related to individuals affected by HIV/AIDS, substance use and mental health disorders, violence/abuse/trauma, grief and loss, racial and social injustices. Ms. Connors is a mental health therapist providing services to individuals who have co-occurring issues. In addition to her pastoral and clinical work, Ms. Connors is a college professor. She has taught at the University of Maryland and is currently teaching at Anne Arundel Community College in Maryland. Like many women of color, Ms. Connors has experienced various forms of oppression. Ms. Connors earned her Bachelor of Social Work, Master of Divinity, Master of Arts in Professional Counseling degrees, respectively, and is a Doctoral Candidate completing her Ph.D. in Psychology.
