Watch the 8-Part Companion Video Series - Available Now on Campus Drug Prevention The Guide to the Eight Professional Competencies for Higher Education Substance Misuse Prevention (Professional Competencies Guide) was designed to promote enhanced professional skills and ultimately significantly impact college students' decisions surrounding drugs and alcohol. This work was developed through the Mid-America PTTC, in partnership with David S. Anderson, PH.D. and a planning body of subject matter experts in the field of substance use prevention on college campuses. The Guide provides a broad understanding of the range of skills necessary for orchestrating comprehensive campus prevention efforts. The resulting compilation organizes competencies within eight core areas; further, it provides specific resources helpful for each of these areas and for overall professional development. As a whole, this Professional Competencies Guide provides a current framework that helps campus leaders and dedicated professionals move things forward, to work more efficiently, and to be more effective. COURSE DESCRIPTION Part 5 of the Ditching the Discomfort with Data series explores several methods and techniques prevention professionals and their partners need to visualize and communicate data around risks, consequences, and resources within a community.  Somewhere along the data process, you are going to have to communicate data-related information with your partners. One way to disseminate data is through data visualization. Data visualization involves taking data and presenting it in a way that is easy to understand. Have you been working with a prevention grant that requires you to conduct a needs assessment or an evaluation? If you are relatively new to prevention or new to using data, this series is for you! In this five-part series, Dr. Hayden Center will take you on a data journey, from providing an overview of the basic components of data literacy to then taking a deeper dive in parts two through four to learn more about data collection, data analysis and interpretation, and finally visualizing and communicating data to your partners. During this journey, there will be discussion and practical tips from Dr. Center; who has worked with local community prevention organizations to build capacity around working with data.   PRESENTER Dr. Hayden D. Center, Jr. was most recently on faculty at Auburn University at Montgomery in the Department of Psychology, where he taught for ten years. He has taught at several universities over the past thirty years.  He has also been a licensed professional counselor (LPC) specializing in addiction issues for over 30 years. Dr. Center has worked as a consultant in alcohol, tobacco, and other drug abuse prevention since 1987.  He has worked in the field of prevention for more than 30 years. He served as the director of a US Department of Education (USDOE) grant while at Auburn University.  He served the State of Alabama Department of Education as the coordinator of the state Safe and Drug-Free Schools Program. He was a consultant to the Alabama Governor’s Office of Drug Abuse Policy for ten years and has worked with numerous state and local agencies in the state of Alabama. He served as the evaluator for the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention’s (CSAP) Southeast Center for the Application of Prevention Technologies (SECAPT) and the Border Center for the Application of Prevention Technologies (BCAPT). He has provided over 300 trainings and workshops on the topics of “science-based prevention,” “evaluation,” “risk and protective factors”, and “sustainability.”  He has worked with numerous agencies and organizations at the national, state, and local levels as an evaluator, including three Drug-Free Community grants.  His experience includes working with several projects to develop data bases, collect and interpret data, and produce data dissemination products and materials. Most recently Dr. Center has conducted training on implementation science, the psychopharmacology of marijuana, opioid use disorder, the opioid epidemic, and prevention of opioid overdose death.  He is also working on the development of a sustainability toolkit that was released in the Fall of 2019.  He and three colleagues presented an overview of the toolkit at the National Prevention Network (NPN) Conference in Chicago in 2019.

Heather Harlan brings a wealth of information on a broad range of mental health and wellness topics. Currently, she is working with a County Department of Health. Her experience has also included, adult and adolescent drug and alcohol counseling and has been part of an initiative to support pediatric providers. Heather also serves as a volunteer family group facilitator for NAMI and interestingly in her "spare time" she is a professional storyteller. Heather says her performances are about connecting the audience. Ms. Harlan states, my highest hope is to connect the audience members with each other. RECORDING:  Harnessing Community Organizing to Enact Alcohol Policies   Dr. Toomey will discuss the key components of community organizing to achieve changes in the community to address a range of public health problems, including excessive alcohol use and related harms. Toomey, PhD Traci L. Toomey, PhD is a professor in the School of Public Health at the University of Minnesota. Her research focuses on the prevention of problems related to use of substances, including alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana. Much of her research has addressed underage alcohol use and over service of alcohol. She has a PhD in epidemiology from the University of Minnesota.

Webinar Description This interactive webinar explored key communications strategies for prevention coalition members to effectively communicate the importance of substance misuse prevention efforts as well as engage new partners and community members. During this session, participants reviewed the relationship between trauma and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) with increased risk for future substance misuse. A good opportunity to retool your experience with familiar strategies to develop compelling messages that include practices incorporating equity and trauma-informed language and practices. The Presenters Ivy Jones-Turner – Is a training and technical assistance specialist with Education Development Center. For over 20 years, Ivy has provided organizational capacity assistance on health promotion and prevention in substance abuse, suicide, violence, injury, and mental health with nonprofit and community-based organizations, state and faith-based agencies, and school districts. Her capacity building skills include program evaluation, training and technical assistance in program design and implementation, organizational development, partnerships/collaborations, and sustainability. Ms. Jones-Turner is a Certified Prevention Specialist and holds an MPA from Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government. Jessica Goldberg - Is a training and technical assistance specialist with Education Development Center. For over a decade, Jess has specialized in building capacity to improve behavioral health at the national, state, regional and local levels. Her areas of expertise include preventing youth substance use; promoting cross-sector collaborations; addressing health disparities; strategic planning, logic model development, and sustainability planning. One Choice Prevention: A Message of Hope and Science Caroline DuPont, MD, Nancy Pasquale, and Corinne Shea, MA August 10, 2022, 1:00pm-2:30pm EST COURSE DESCRIPTION This webinar presents the One Choice Toolkit, a free resource for prevention leaders working with youth of all ages. One Choice is not a program but a framework. Analogous to other standards that promote teen health, the standard for substance use is One Choice: no use of any alcohol, nicotine, marijuana, or other drugs by youth under age 21 for reasons of health. Data show that for American youth, all substance use is closely related – and that the percentage of young people making the decision not to use any substances has been increasing for nearly four decades. The One Choice Toolkit offers data, graphics, and ideas and activities to help communities create social norms campaigns, amplifying the voices of youth who are making One Choice to be drug-free. LEARNING OBJECTIVES Discuss the One Choice prevention message and the brain science and national substance use trends behind it Identify ways the One Choice message can be successfully integrated into youth-led prevention activities and prevention education materials. Examine the One Choice Toolkit and brainstorm new resources that could enhance the integration of the One Choice message among prevention groups Presenters Caroline DuPont, MD is Vice President of the Institute for Behavior and Health, Inc. (IBH), a 501(c)3 non-profit research and policy organization located in Rockville, MD. The IBH mission is to reduce the use of illegal drugs. In her role as Vice President, Dr. DuPont focuses on the areas of addiction treatment and prevention. She maintains a private practice specializing in anxiety and addiction. Formerly she was the founding President and Principal Investigator of DuPont Clinical Research, Inc., where she directed a team that conducted studies of investigational medication for the anxiety and affective disorders. Dr. DuPont received her MD from the University of Texas Health Sciences Center, Houston and completed her training at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, where for years she held an appointment on the clinical faculty of psychiatry. She is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and by the American Board of Addiction Medicine. She is the co-author of numerous publications and several book chapters on anxiety and addiction. Nancy Pasquale is Co-founder and Coalition Coordinator of RyeACT Coalition, a Drug Free Communities prevention coalition in Rye, NY. Her professional background is in human resources development and curriculum design, and she served for two terms as an elected Trustee of the Rye City School District Board of Education. Ms. Pasquale is a founding member of the One Choice Community, in partnership with the Institute for Behavior and Health, Inc., and a founding member of K.N.O.W. 2 Prevent, a collaborative of prevention leaders in Westchester County, NY. Nancy is also certified by the National Council for Mental Wellbeing as an instructor of Youth Mental Health First Aid. Ms. Pasquale oversees all programmatic aspects of RyeACT’s operations and serves as Co-Advisor of the Youth Action Team, working directly with youth leaders. Under her stewardship, RyeACT has been recognized by the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) for exemplary leadership in youth prevention and selected to the pilot cohort of CADCA’s Graduate Coalition Academy. Ms. Pasquale has presented at CADCA’s National Leadership Forum, and at national and regional conferences of The American Society of Addiction Medicine, The School-Based Health Alliance, and Youth to Youth International, among others. Corinne Shea has held several positions at the Institute for Behavior and Health, Inc. since joining the organization in 2007. In her present role as Director of Programs and Communications, she is responsible for the organization and management of drug policy initiatives and projects related to the IBH priorities, including managing the One Choice Community. She directs the writing of research manuscripts, reports, and journal articles. She earned her MA and BA from The George Washington University.

Racial Disparities In Substance Use Prevention Laura Hinds, MSW, LCSW June 15, 2022, 1:00pm-3:00pm EST COURSE DESCRIPTION This training will explore the difference in how drug use, misuse, and penalty has fallen along racial lines and examine how efforts to engage and prevent substance misuse has been affected by implicit bias, partiality, and judgment. This training will present opportunities to learn strategies to address racial disparities while working with persons in care. From whom gets offered supportive treatment to how record keeping prevents or disrupts sobriety, this training will explore ethical responsibilities regarding equity and justice in the field of addiction management. LEARNING OBJECTIVES Identify how bias and partiality affects the substance use prevention services offered to and accessed by minority populations Identify opportunities for safeguarding processes in outreach, programming, and treatment that can be affected by racial bias Explain steps and strategies to address racial disparities and increase racial equity of treatment access and engagement Describe strategies to increase the efficacy of prevention initiatives and to facilitate positive outcomes and experiences for minority clients living with substance use and misuse issues PRESENTERS Laura Hinds is a clinical social worker with experience in medical, behavioral and mental health settings.  Laura has had the pleasure of working with high acuity special needs populations and their providers for over 22 years.  An alumna and instructor at Penn’s School of Social Policy and Practice for 13 years, and Bryn Mawr’s School of Social Work and Social Research’s for the past 4 years, Laura has supported the learning and education of new social workers, veterans in the field, and their interdisciplinary partners.  With a focus on trauma, human and gender development, racial equity, and crisis intervention Laura supports special needs populations and those who serve them.

Exploring the Science of Connection Behind Promoting First Relationships   May 25, 2022   Description Promoting First Relationships ® (PFR: Kelly et al., 2008) is a brief 10-week home visiting intervention designed for caregivers with infants or young children. PFR is a program that focuses on the quality of the caregiver-child relationship as a source of protection from toxic stress. Providers who learn to use PFR are trained to use strength-based strategies including positive feedback and reflective observation. Together these strategies help caregivers develop a deeper understanding of their child’s behavior which in turn increases their sensitivity to their child’s social and emotional needs. PFR uses video feedback to facilitate reflective observation and discussion. PFR has been evaluated in five randomized clinical trials: two trials in the child welfare system in Washington State; two trials within American Indian tribes; and one trial in a perinatal mental health setting. In this presentation, we will first describe the underlying conceptual model that leverages positive relationships as a source of resilience and then describe the PFR model of intervention. We will also show some videotaped examples of PFR in practice and conclude with a brief overview of the evidence base.    Objectives By the end of the webinar participants will be able to: Identify key elements why focusing on children birth-five promotes overall well-being across the life course. Articulate two strategies that Promoting First Relationships® uses to elevate resilience and caregiver’s strengths to support the Caregiver-Child relationship. Describe PFR home-visiting program and have a basic understanding of relationship-based models of promotion and prevention.   Presenter Monica Oxford, MSW, PhD, is a Research Professor in Child, Family, and Population Health Nursing at the University of Washington and the Executive Director of the Barnard Center for Infant Mental Health and Development. Her research focuses on early parenting and child developmental outcomes for families living in challenging environments. Dr. Oxford’s interest is in how context, parenting, and child characteristics combine to inform particular patterns of child outcomes and how intervention services promote both caregiver and child well-being. Dr. Oxford is also involved in training social service providers throughout Washington on infant mental health, strengths-based practice, and how providers can support caregiver-child dyadic interaction from an attachment-based perspective. Dr. Oxford is the principal investigator of four NIH grants; the first three are randomized control trials aimed at examining the impact of Promoting First Relationships® (PFR: Kelly et al, 2008). Strategic Alliance: Prevention Across the Continuum of Care Yvonne L Stroman, MA, CRS June 8, 2022, 1:00pm-2:30pm EST COURSE DESCRIPTION Substance misuse prevention efforts educate and support individuals and communities to prevent the use and misuse of drugs, yet there remains a portion of our communities who use substances. Harm reduction includes strategies and ideas that aim to reduce the negative consequences related to substance misuse. Harm reduction can be considered as an approach to secondary prevention of risky behavior among youth with the intent to save lives, reduce consequences and build support. LEARNING OBJECTIVES Define harm reduction and locate strategy within the continuum of care for prevention Provide an overview of harm reduction and positive youth development philosophy Evaluate community readiness to embrace and implement harm reduction practices as part of its prevention efforts Develop one actionable item for training their own staff in harm reduction PRESENTER Yvonne L Stroman, MA, CRS, for more than 25 years, has worked in the field of social services providing leadership, direction, support, education, advocacy, training and empowerment to individuals, families and communities. She has served in various capacities, including executive director of a non-profit as well as senior management. Her current position, includes working as an administrator for the county drug and alcohol agency. Her duties include working with local organizations to assure that quality drug and alcohol services are provided, providing community education and awareness regarding alcohol and other drug use disorders; providing support and referrals to individuals seeking assistance for a drug and alcohol problem; and working with community organizations and agencies to advocate and promote recovery from addiction. Through other related initiatives, Yvonne collaborates with individuals and social agencies to promote environmental strategies and educates the public about the dangers and consequences associated with youth’s use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs and other social issues affecting youth and the community. Yvonne’s community activism includes service on local boards including, Reading, PA School Board, Reading Police Diversity Board, Berks County Children and Youth Advisory Board, Berks County Suicide Prevention Task Force, and the Pennsylvania Statewide Disproportionate Minority Contact Sub-Committee –an advisory committee under the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency. Yvonne is a national consultant for the CADCA and the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Programs providing training to youth and adults on issues and initiatives that promote cultural diversity and awareness and ultimately create community level change. Additionally, Yvonne is a part-time Adjunct Professor at Alvernia University in Reading, Pennsylvania. Yvonne holds a Master’s Degree in Human Services Counseling for Addictions and Recovery and is a Certified Recovery Specialist.

Culturally Responsible Services for Youths of Color Randall Leonard, LCSW-C June 1, 2022, 1:00pm-3:00pm EST COURSE DESCRIPTION Youth of color continue to experience disparities in receiving care in health care settings. About 13% of children of color receive mental health services compared to 31% of white children. This training will explore the unique demographics of communities of color, barriers to seeking and receiving services, and new culturally sound information that is key to bridging gaps in access and care. Join social worker Randall Leonard, LCSW-C (they/them/theirs) to explore culturally responsible techniques to reach, connect, and serve youth of color and their families in a variety of health care settings. LEARNING OBJECTIVES Describe the strengths, challenges and needs of youth of color Explain how to better engage and support ethnic minority community members and their children Identify three specific ways to create a welcoming and cultural affirming environment for youth of color PRESENTER Randall Leonard, LCSW-C (they/them) Maryland native Randall Leonard is a licensed clinical social worker who has specialized in the care of LGBTQ individuals for four years. They currently serve as a Staff Therapist at the Center for LGBTQ Health Equity, a Center of Excellence of Chase Brexton Health Care, providing individual therapy as well as assessments for gender-affirming surgery. They also facilitate “Identity Talk”, a group for trans and gender-diverse people of color to process intersectionality between culture and gender. Before joining the Chase Brexton team, Randall served survivors of intimate partner violence at Family and Children’s Services, where they provided individual therapy and a weekly support group. In addition, they worked as a Behavioral Specialist in the Emergency Department of Union Memorial Hospital. They started their social work career working with people with severe and persistent mental illness at Sheppard Pratt Health Systems. Randall holds a Master of Social Work from the University of Maryland School of Social Work with a concentration in clinical behavioral health.

Preventing Substance Use Disorder Related Stigma Jessica Hulsey, BA March 17, 2022, 1:00pm-2:30pm EST COURSE DESCRIPTION Substance use disorder (SUD) is one of the most highly stigmatized health conditions in the world. This stigma creates barriers to early intervention, screening, treatment, and effective recovery. It also results in a lack of general public support for legislation that provides meaningful reform and fiscal support to prevention, treatment, and recovery. This webinar will focus on how to prevent stigma. Topics covered will include responding to misconceptions about substance use disorder, such as waiting for “rock bottom” and “teens are going to drink anyway, so they might as well do it at home”. The webinar will also discuss evidence-based strategies that can help to prevent stigma, such as increased addiction literacy. Understanding Prevention Science Part 2: Building Support for Science Josh Esrick, MPP, and Emily Patton, MSc, PgDip March 16, 2022, 1:00pm-2:30pm EST COURSE DESCRIPTION This webinar will discuss how to ensure that prevention science guides and supports prevention professionals. Part of this is understanding how to identify and implement evidence-based prevention programs and services. Equally important, however, is understanding the need to build a “culture of prevention” among policymakers, other public health stakeholders, and the community at large. By having this culture of prevention, prevention professionals can establish support for new and expanded evidence-based programs and services. This webinar will review each of these topics. Emily Patton, MSc, PgDip holds a Masters of Science in Abnormal and Clinical Psychology from Swansea University and a Postgraduate Degree in Criminology and Criminal Justice from the University of Edinburgh. She offers significant professional experience in the fields of public policy development and analysis, criminal justice research, data collection and analysis, program development, and performance management.

Understanding Prevention Science Part 1: The Basis of the Field Josh Esrick, MPP, and Emily Patton, MSc, PgDip March 9, 2022, 1:00pm-2:30pm EST COURSE DESCRIPTION This webinar will review prevention science and its relevance to substance use prevention professionals. It will describe the different domains of relevant science, including epidemiology, intervention development, and research methodology. The webinar will discuss how these domains influence and improve public health and prevention efforts. Additionally, the webinar will review the latest research in prevention science. It will provide examples of theories and frameworks to better understand how evidence is used and how it can be applied to the prevention field. Lastly, it will discuss how prevention science can support prevention professionals and others in the field in establishing actionable processes, policies, and programs. Currently, she assists with training evaluations for NADCP and the PTTC, where she brings her experience with quantitative and qualitative analysis and data visualization. With a strong interest in policy analysis, research translation, data collection, and analytic writing, Ms. Pappacena is published in the Journal of Human Rights and Social Work for her analysis of national early-release laws.

PowerPoint     Begin Your Data Journey and Ditch the Discomfort Are you curious about what you need to know as a prevention professional to participate in data-based decision-making? Have you been working with a prevention grant that requires you to conduct a needs assessment or an evaluation? If you are relatively new to prevention or new to using data, this series is for you! In this five-part series, Dr. Hayden Center will take you on a data journey, from providing an overview of the basic components of data literacy to then taking a deeper dive in parts two through four to learn more about data collection, data analysis and interpretation, and finally visualizing and communicating data to your partners. During this journey, there will be discussion and practical tips from Dr. Center; who has worked with local community prevention organizations to build capacity around working with data.     PRESENTER Dr. Hayden D. Center, Jr. was most recently on faculty at Auburn University at Montgomery in the Department of Psychology, where he taught for ten years. He has taught at several universities over the past thirty years.  He has also been a licensed professional counselor (LPC) specializing in addiction issues for over 30 years. Dr. Center has worked as a consultant in alcohol, tobacco, and other drug abuse prevention since 1987.  He has worked in the field of prevention for more than 30 years. He served as the director of a US Department of Education (USDOE) grant while at Auburn University.  He served the State of Alabama Department of Education as the coordinator of the state Safe and Drug-Free Schools Program. He was a consultant to the Alabama Governor’s Office of Drug Abuse Policy for ten years and has worked with numerous state and local agencies in the state of Alabama. He served as the evaluator for the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention’s (CSAP) Southeast Center for the Application of Prevention Technologies (SECAPT) and the Border Center for the Application of Prevention Technologies (BCAPT). He has provided over 300 trainings and workshops on the topics of “science-based prevention,” “evaluation,” “risk and protective factors”, and “sustainability.”  He has worked with numerous agencies and organizations at the national, state, and local levels as an evaluator, including three Drug-Free Community grants.  His experience includes working with several projects to develop databases, collect and interpret data, and produce data dissemination products and materials. Most recently Dr. Center has conducted training on implementation science, the psychopharmacology of marijuana, opioid use disorder, the opioid epidemic, and prevention of opioid overdose death.  He is also working on the development of a sustainability toolkit that was released in the Fall of 2019.  He and three colleagues presented an overview of the toolkit at the National Prevention Network (NPN) Conference in Chicago in 2019.
