Chris Davis is the Vice President of Prevention and Youth Support at Community Partnership of the Ozarks in Springfield, Mo.  Chris began his career as a counselor, but 23 years ago started his journey into substance use and violence prevention. Mr. Davis and his team provide services across a multi-county region of Southwest Missouri, and in some regards, he is the un-official historian of prevention across his state and is affectionately known as Mr. Logic Model due to his interest in perfecting the model and his passion for teaching that skill. Recording: Girls and Women: Substance Misuse Trends and Prevention Strategies   Data now show that girls and young women, ages 12 to 20, are drinking more alcohol than their male counterparts. There are some key considerations that prevention specialists should know as they design strategies to curb harmful drinking behaviors among girls, such as the association between underage drinking and mental health conditions including depression and anxiety. For more than 14 years, Erin has worked in substance abuse prevention supporting communities to use evidence-based strategies and data-driven processes in substance abuse prevention planning and implementation.  She works with community level prevention practitioners and schools in the development, implementation, evaluation, and sustainability of prevention interventions.   Stephanie Asteriadis Pyle, PhD, CPS  Stephanie Asteriadis Pyle, PhD, CPS, Emeritus is a former Project Manager for the Center for the Application of Substance Abuse Technologies (CASAT).  Dr. Asteriadis Pyle established Nevada’s first substance use disorder library and clearinghouse at the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) campus and during her tenure at UNR/CASAT served as the C0-I or PI for 36 grants and contracts for substance use prevention for students at UNR and Truckee Meadows Community College (TMCC) and problem gambling prevention for aging populations in Nevada. Dr. Asteriadis Pyle most recently managed and wrote for the CASAT OnDemand website and blog for five years, synthesizing research for professionals in SUD prevention, treatment, and recovery and related behavioral health fields. She continues to teach CAS 255, an introductory course in substance misuse prevention she has taught face to face or online since 2007

As the landscape of medicinal and adult personal use of cannabis change across the country, prevention practitioners are left with mixed messages about how to address youth cannabis use. Research is catching up to this changing landscape, and new information about how perception of harm and related factors impact youth cannabis use are emerging. This two module webinar course will focus on the research behind those factors, as well as evidence-informed strategies for addressing them.

One Choice Prevention: A Message of Hope and Science Caroline DuPont, MD, Nancy Pasquale, and Corinne Shea, MA August 10, 2022, 1:00pm-2:30pm EST COURSE DESCRIPTION This webinar presents the One Choice Toolkit, a free resource for prevention leaders working with youth of all ages. One Choice is not a program but a framework. Analogous to other standards that promote teen health, the standard for substance use is One Choice: no use of any alcohol, nicotine, marijuana, or other drugs by youth under age 21 for reasons of health. Data show that for American youth, all substance use is closely related – and that the percentage of young people making the decision not to use any substances has been increasing for nearly four decades. The One Choice Toolkit offers data, graphics, and ideas and activities to help communities create social norms campaigns, amplifying the voices of youth who are making One Choice to be drug-free. LEARNING OBJECTIVES Discuss the One Choice prevention message and the brain science and national substance use trends behind it Identify ways the One Choice message can be successfully integrated into youth-led prevention activities and prevention education materials. She is the co-author of numerous publications and several book chapters on anxiety and addiction. Nancy Pasquale is Co-founder and Coalition Coordinator of RyeACT Coalition, a Drug Free Communities prevention coalition in Rye, NY. Her professional background is in human resources development and curriculum design, and she served for two terms as an elected Trustee of the Rye City School District Board of Education. Ms. Pasquale is a founding member of the One Choice Community, in partnership with the Institute for Behavior and Health, Inc., and a founding member of K.N.O.W. 2 Prevent, a collaborative of prevention leaders in Westchester County, NY. Nancy is also certified by the National Council for Mental Wellbeing as an instructor of Youth Mental Health First Aid. Ms. Pasquale oversees all programmatic aspects of RyeACT’s operations and serves as Co-Advisor of the Youth Action Team, working directly with youth leaders. Under her stewardship, RyeACT has been recognized by the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) for exemplary leadership in youth prevention and selected to the pilot cohort of CADCA’s Graduate Coalition Academy. Ms. Pasquale has presented at CADCA’s National Leadership Forum, and at national and regional conferences of The American Society of Addiction Medicine, The School-Based Health Alliance, and Youth to Youth International, among others. Corinne Shea has held several positions at the Institute for Behavior and Health, Inc. since joining the organization in 2007. In her present role as Director of Programs and Communications, she is responsible for the organization and management of drug policy initiatives and projects related to the IBH priorities, including managing the One Choice Community. She directs the writing of research manuscripts, reports, and journal articles. She earned her MA and BA from The George Washington University.

In this capacity he works with local stakeholders to reduce the consequences of substance abuse across the region through the use of evidence-based, environmental strategies.  Previously Chuck served as the Region's Strategic Prevention Framework coordinator. Much of this work focused on reducing underage drinking in Payne County. As the Students Working Against Tobacco (SWAT) Coordinator, he was responsible for recruiting, training and sustaining SWAT groups at local schools. These student groups sought to complete anti-tobacco advocacy campaigns such as getting their school to pass 24/7 tobacco free policies. For the last 11 years he has coordinated various grants that seek to solve local substance use and abuse problems through the use of the Strategic Prevention Framework model by empowering youth.       Chieftess Olufemi Yeshua EL is a consultant, diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging strategist, and educator. She serves as the chair of the NY Association for the Education of Young Children Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee. In this role, she is helping the organization become an anti-racist organization. She reviews the organization's strategic plan, works with various committees to analyze their work from a DEI lens, and helps educators across New York state be more impactful within their work with Black Indigenous People Of Color (BIPOC) children, and families with a focus on DEI. She holds a Master's degree in Early Childhood Education and Teaching and she is the founder and co-chair of the Parents of Children of Color Affinity Group.

Recording link: Nexus of Substance Misuse Prevention and Problem Gambling Prevention   The focus of this webinar is on the nexus between substance misuse prevention and problem gambling prevention. Gambling disorders are highly comorbid with other mental health and substance use disorders. The prevalence of co-occurring gambling addiction and substance abuse is high. Approximately 1 in 10 compulsive gamblers report being concerned about their substance use.   LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Discuss the complex relationship between problem gambling and substance misuse. List shared risk and protective factors between problem gambling and substance misuse disorders List the barriers to collaboration between the problem gambling prevention field and substance misuse prevention Describe collaboration strategies for substance use prevention professionals and the problem gambling prevention field to improve public health and community conditions.   PRESENTER:  Rebecca Bishop, MSW Director, Massachusetts Center of Excellence for Problem Gambling Rebecca Bishop specializes in initiatives to improve the health, mental health, and well-being of youth and high-risk populations. She brings expertise in mental health promotion, health equity, cultural and linguistic responsiveness, community mobilization, and violence prevention and intervention. Bishop has a history of applying a health and racial equity lens to substance use, youth development, violence and problem gambling prevention, as well as mental health issues. She leads EDC’s Gambling Prevention Technical Assistance Center and has managed three regional planning processes across Massachusetts to learn about local knowledge, beliefs, and attitudes related to gambling, resulting in population-specific prevention strategies. Bishop holds an MA in Social Work, Health, and Mental Health Administration from Boston College Graduate School of Social Work and has a Certificate in Nonprofit Management and Leadership.   The Great Lakes A/MH/PTTC offered this training for individuals working in HHS Region 5: IL, IN, MI, MN, OH, WI. This training was provided in response to a need identified by Region 5 stakeholders.  

Recording: Risk Factors for Youth Substance Misuse   How can we prevent substance misuse unless we understand what places kids at greater risk of misusing drugs? During this webinar, we will explore the risk factors that place youth at greater risk of substance misuse, as identified by the Social Development Research Group through systematic reviews of the research literature. Time will be spent exploring each risk factor to ensure that preventionists understand the meaning of each factor in order to address them effectively. This training will build on the information shared during the Great Lakes PTTC webinar on the importance of protective factors (May 24, 2022).   LEARNING OBJECTIVES: By the end of the webinar, participants will be able to: Describe the importance of focusing on both increasing protective factors and decreasing protective factors List the criteria used to identify factors that place youth at greater risk of substance misuse Understand the nuances that exist for each risk factor Put the risk factor framework into action in their communities   PRESENTER:  Kris Gabrielsen, MPH Kris Gabrielsen is the co-director of the Great Lakes Prevention Technology Transfer Center. She has worked in the substance misuse prevention field for over 30 years. Kris was the Associate Director of the Western Center for the Application of Prevention Technologies (CAPT), co-authored the first Substance Abuse Prevention Specialist Training curriculum, and co-authored the textbook, Substance Abuse Prevention: The Intersection of Science and Practice. As a consultant, she has worked with states and communities across the nation to bridge the gap between research and practice, assisting prevention professionals in maximizing their effectiveness.

To adequately support youth prevention work, prevention professionals must be inclusive of people from all backgrounds, cultures, and experiences. It also means including these principles when planning. Developed by the Central East PTTC, in partnership with Chase Brexton's Center for LGBTQ Health Equity, this fact sheet is intended to provide an overview of the unique unmet needs of Youth of Color. Included are recent trends in the data as well as effective therapeutic approaches for prevention and mental health professionals.

Part 3: Recent Science on Cannabis and a Changing Legal Climate: Opportunities for Prevention and Public Health Messaging June 14, 2022  Presented by: Dr. Jason Kilmer, Associate Professor in Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Washington (UW) As states consider medical cannabis or outright legalization of cannabis for non-medical purposes, it is important to also consider prevention and public health needs. In this web-based presentation, we will consider changes in potency/concentration seen in states with medical or non-medical cannabis, what the science says about these products, and what this means (particularly for prevention with youth). We will consider environmental, public health, and prevention efforts that can be part of a mix of strategies to prevent cannabis use among youth. Participants will: Identify a screening measure for Cannabis Use Disorder. Describe at least two (2) risks/outcome associated with cannabis use. Strategic Alliance: Prevention Across the Continuum of Care Yvonne L Stroman, MA, CRS June 8, 2022, 1:00pm-2:30pm EST COURSE DESCRIPTION Substance misuse prevention efforts educate and support individuals and communities to prevent the use and misuse of drugs, yet there remains a portion of our communities who use substances. Harm reduction includes strategies and ideas that aim to reduce the negative consequences related to substance misuse. Harm reduction can be considered as an approach to secondary prevention of risky behavior among youth with the intent to save lives, reduce consequences and build support. LEARNING OBJECTIVES Define harm reduction and locate strategy within the continuum of care for prevention Provide an overview of harm reduction and positive youth development philosophy Evaluate community readiness to embrace and implement harm reduction practices as part of its prevention efforts Develop one actionable item for training their own staff in harm reduction PRESENTER Yvonne L Stroman, MA, CRS, for more than 25 years, has worked in the field of social services providing leadership, direction, support, education, advocacy, training and empowerment to individuals, families and communities. She has served in various capacities, including executive director of a non-profit as well as senior management. Her current position, includes working as an administrator for the county drug and alcohol agency. Her duties include working with local organizations to assure that quality drug and alcohol services are provided, providing community education and awareness regarding alcohol and other drug use disorders; providing support and referrals to individuals seeking assistance for a drug and alcohol problem; and working with community organizations and agencies to advocate and promote recovery from addiction. Through other related initiatives, Yvonne collaborates with individuals and social agencies to promote environmental strategies and educates the public about the dangers and consequences associated with youth’s use of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs and other social issues affecting youth and the community. Yvonne’s community activism includes service on local boards including, Reading, PA School Board, Reading Police Diversity Board, Berks County Children and Youth Advisory Board, Berks County Suicide Prevention Task Force, and the Pennsylvania Statewide Disproportionate Minority Contact Sub-Committee –an advisory committee under the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency. Yvonne is a national consultant for the CADCA and the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Programs providing training to youth and adults on issues and initiatives that promote cultural diversity and awareness and ultimately create community level change. Additionally, Yvonne is a part-time Adjunct Professor at Alvernia University in Reading, Pennsylvania. Yvonne holds a Master’s Degree in Human Services Counseling for Addictions and Recovery and is a Certified Recovery Specialist.

The times have changed, and so must our conversations in the community. An overview of marketing trends will be provided, which have moved far beyond selling a “high”, to selling a lifestyle, a path to natural health and wellness, and any mood/experience/delivery method of the consumer’s choosing. Further, the importance of staying informed about marketing trends and some strategies for doing so, will be highlighted. Additionally, a framework for selecting messages/materials available for the prevention field will be offered. Preventionists have moved from the need to be content creators, and now must be expert curators. Lastly, an emphasis will be placed on audience analysis and editing, too! The goal is for participants to build confidence and skills for more effective conversations about cannabis. Participants will: Describe the current cannabis landscape and industry marketing trends. Identify prevention strategies for a variety of cannabis regulatory frameworks. Formulate messages that resonate with a range of audiences. Culturally Responsible Services for Youths of Color Randall Leonard, LCSW-C June 1, 2022, 1:00pm-3:00pm EST COURSE DESCRIPTION Youth of color continue to experience disparities in receiving care in health care settings. About 13% of children of color receive mental health services compared to 31% of white children. This training will explore the unique demographics of communities of color, barriers to seeking and receiving services, and new culturally sound information that is key to bridging gaps in access and care. Join social worker Randall Leonard, LCSW-C (they/them/theirs) to explore culturally responsible techniques to reach, connect, and serve youth of color and their families in a variety of health care settings. LEARNING OBJECTIVES Describe the strengths, challenges and needs of youth of color Explain how to better engage and support ethnic minority community members and their children Identify three specific ways to create a welcoming and cultural affirming environment for youth of color PRESENTER Randall Leonard, LCSW-C (they/them) Maryland native Randall Leonard is a licensed clinical social worker who has specialized in the care of LGBTQ individuals for four years. They currently serve as a Staff Therapist at the Center for LGBTQ Health Equity, a Center of Excellence of Chase Brexton Health Care, providing individual therapy as well as assessments for gender-affirming surgery. They also facilitate “Identity Talk”, a group for trans and gender-diverse people of color to process intersectionality between culture and gender. Before joining the Chase Brexton team, Randall served survivors of intimate partner violence at Family and Children’s Services, where they provided individual therapy and a weekly support group. In addition, they worked as a Behavioral Specialist in the Emergency Department of Union Memorial Hospital. They started their social work career working with people with severe and persistent mental illness at Sheppard Pratt Health Systems. Randall holds a Master of Social Work from the University of Maryland School of Social Work with a concentration in clinical behavioral health.

Part 1: Considerations for Cannabis Legalization in Your State May 31, 2022  Presented by: Ali Maffey, MSW, Colorado Retail Marijuana Education Program, Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment Ali Maffey, MSW, has led the Retail Marijuana Education Program in Colorado since its founding in 2014 in which she leads the public health response to youth prevention and adult education for adult use of cannabis. As the first state in the nation to open adult-use cannabis retail stores, Colorado was on the forefront of creating a public health response to this emerging market. The state had numerous successes along with many challenges in navigating this response, and this session will provide an opportunity to discuss what other states can learn from Colorado's response to formulate their own prevention and education programs. Participants will: Identify the type of cannabis legalization and current cannabis prevalence rates in Region 8 states (CO, MT, ND, SD, UT, WY). Describe how to identify leading public health considerations, with legalization, based on data. Identify lessons learned from Colorado shifting from a medical marijuana state to legalized adult use.
